The Goal is Zero Waste
Join an in-person presentation with members of Zero Waste, an organization committed to education and action that can move us toward zero waste in Columbia County. Held at the North Chatham Free Library Tuesday, February 7 from 10 AM – 11 AM, presenters Stephanie Sussman and Dee Duckworth will share strategies and tips on how to reuse as much as possible, minimize waste, and recycle and compost whenever possible. Even small changes have a bigger impact than you realize. Focus on reducing your waste, do not worry about totally eliminating it and everything will fall into place in time.

The Check It Out Book Club has selected The Kitchen Front, by Jennifer Ryan, as their February read.This 2021 historical fiction novel tells the story of a BBC-sponsored wartime cooking competition and the four women who enter for a chance to better their lives. Book Club will meet at the library on Thursday, 2/2, at 6:00 PM. New members are always welcome, and no registration is required. We have a limited supply of The Kitchen Front available at the circulation desk. It is also available in ebook format through the Libby app.

North Greenbush Public Library Update
Love the library? Then “Take Your Child to the Library Day” (TYCLD), Saturday, Feb. 4, an international initiative to encourage families to introduce their children to their local library, is right up your alley! Drop into the North Greenbush Public Library anytime between 10 AM and 2 PM for a scavenger
hunt, and crafts for children to create, in the children’s room.
Let’s go LEGO! Our LEGO Club will meet Monday, January 30, 5:30 to 6:30PM. We supply the LEGO- kids supply the imagination!
Pre-school storytime continues on Tuesday at 11 AM, in the North Greenbush Town Hall Annex. Storytime brings children stories, songs, games, and a related craft, all based on a weekly theme. Thursday crafternoons, between 3 and 5 PM, feature a new craft project each week.
Join our Winter Reading Challenge, and slide into winter on the tails of our sledding penguin! All ages can join and enter to win a prize by completing a game sheet, available at the circulation desk.

Greenbush Historical Society Presents “Up From Troy”
Please join the Greenbush Historical Society on February 12, 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library when Jim Flanigan will talk about growing up locally and his many years of public service in Rensselaer County. Mr. Flanigan is the author of two memoirs, “Up From Second Street” and “The Great Paper Chase.” He was a member of the North Greenbush Town Board for 24 years, was employed in the administration of Rensselaer ARC for 34 years, and taught both on the high school and college levels.
Mr. Flanigan’s talk with recollections of his years spent in Rensselaer County is sure to bring back memories of events from the past. Plan to be at the library on February 12 for a journey down memory lane with author, Jim Flanigan. Chocolate Friendzy at the Poestenkill Library
February is Love Your Library Month, and with it comes the return of the Chocolate Friendzy put on by the Friends of the Poestenkill Library! On Saturday, February 11, we will be holding a drawing for a giant basket full of chocolate treats. That day, you can also stop by and pick up your pre-ordered box of homemade chocolate goodies. Award-Winning songwriters/musicians perform & present history of Adirondack Lumber Camp Songs
Join award-winning songwriters and musicians Cosby Gibson & Tom Staudle at 2 pm on Sunday, January 29th at the East Greenbush Community Library for a unique music program bringing actual historic songs from the lumber camps in the Adirondack Mountains in the 1800’s. You will also hear to descriptive narrative of the history of the camps and music of that era. The 1800’s were considered the golden era of the logging industry in the Adirondacks. It is an era when society first made huge demands for paper and lumber, and when there were few regulations for the harvesting of trees. Workers were attracted to the lifestyle of being a lumberjack even though the work was harsh and dangerous. Their songs were for leisure, with some written on the spot, or adapted from hearing them in passing.
Cosby Gibson & Tom Staudle are award-winning songwriters and musicians living near the Adirondacks. Cosby and Tom are also the recipients of the Dorn Space Arts Award for Music Outreach in 2019. Together they play originals and favorites with a variety of instruments such as guitar, fiddle, banjo, and harmonica, and in many settings such as festivals, concert series, livestreams, and community events.
