Open Studio Night Thursday, June 23, 4:30 – 7pm – Finding it hard to complete your art/craft projects? Beginner or expert, bring your projects to the library and get inspiration from other artists/crafters to get the job done!

Uncharted Wild on June 25 at 11am will kick off our Summer Reading Program. Feel, see, and learn firsthand about a wide variety of reptiles and other exotic animals. Don’t miss it! If you can’t make it to the show, you can still sign up for summer reading either online or at the library.

Reptile Adventure – Mon., 6/27, 6:00pm – Meet live tortoises, lizards, and snakes! Participants will get the opportunity to touch and hold some animals, and they’ll be able to watch animals eat fruit & eggs. We’ll also discuss ecology, adaptations, and invasive species. Funding for this event provided by Stewart’s Shops Holiday Match Program.
Teen Time: Sharpie Tie-Dye – Tues., 6/28, 4:00pm – Simple, fun tie-dyeing using Sharpies! Bring a t-shirt or other item. For teens going into 6th-12th grades in the fall.
Cool Science: Fireworks in a Jar – Wed., 6/29, 3:00-5:00pm – Make colorful food coloring “fireworks” in a jar and learn about density and polarity!
Patriotic Crafts – Thurs., 6/30, 1:00-6:00pm – Get ready for the 4th of July with some fun crafts to celebrate and decorate your home!

Summer Reading Fun for Teens and Adults
How do you choose the books you read? Sometimes the best books are ones you hear about from another person, especially when they say “This book made me think of you. You’ll love this!” The Sand Lake Town Library Friends would like to tap into that power by building a shared community resource of book recommendations.This idea started when a library patron recommended The Reading List by Sarah Nisha Adams to library director, Mindy Fowler. In this novel, a chance encounter with a list of library books leads people from different backgrounds to read books they may never have considered and find common ground. As a tie-in for teens and adults to the Summer Reading Program “Oceans of Possibilities,” we’d like to know what book(s) you’d put on your reading list.
Look for our “What’s Your O.P.B.?” (Ocean of Possibilities Book) display in the library. Take a minute to add the title of a book (or 2!) that inspired you, made you laugh, taught you a lesson, or otherwise opened you up to oceans of possibilities. At the end of the summer, we’ll type up the recommendations and make the list available on our website. Your recommendation makes you eligible for a special drawing at the end of August. We’ve also created a list of fiction and nonfiction books that somehow relate to the ocean. Pick one of these books, give it a read, then tell us why you would (or would not) recommend it. Shorts out Loud!
The Troy Public Library is pleased to present “Shorts Out Loud!” consisting of fifteen minutes of LIVE acoustic music followed by a contemporary short story read out loud, on Thursdays from July 7th through August 18th at 6:00 PM, with dates at both our locations.

Solar Boats from the Hudson River to the Pacific North-West
Join us at the Troy Public Library, on Monday, July 18th at 6:00pm for this engaging talk with David Borton.
David taught physics in Africa with the Peace Corps along with his bride Harriet. They came back to RPI for graduate school where David got a Ph.D. in physics, while Harriet got a Masters in physics. In the 1974, during the oil crisis, they couldn’t buy gasoline and David started R&D into solar energy, the only energy source that makes sense for this small blue planet.
Later RPI asked David to teach Solar Energy Engineering, and in 1982, the family built a solar powered house in which they still live 40, years later.
David combined his lifelong love of canoes, Adirondack Guide boats, and solar energy into a patented practical solar electric boat technology company. Son Alex led David on a 1400 mile solar powered, 27 foot boat voyage, the first ever actually, from Bellingham to Ketchikan Alaska and on to Juneau and Glacier Bay.

Summer at Rensselaer Library
Summer Reading Kick-off: Saturday June 25, 11-2. Start off your child’s summer with a celebration of reading! Food, balloon twisting, face painting and other fun activities for kids ages 4-12. Sponsored by the Friends of the Rensselaer Library.
Weekly Craft time starts June 28 at 2 PM, and the full summer schedule of events will be issued soon.
