Results for East Greenbush Library 2021 Budget Vote & Election
EAST GREENBUSH – The proposed budget for the East Greenbush Community Library was presented to voters at the annual Library Election and Budget Vote held on September 15. The proposed budget of $2,067,581, which is 3.2% decrease (which is in response to a total income loss of $68,967) and is below the NYS Property Tax Cap, passed with a margin of 6 to 1.
The total taxable value of the East Greenbush Library Special Legislative District has increased approximately 1.4%. This will result in taxes remaining essentially flat. The proposed levy from East Greenbush this year is $1,722,454. The estimated cost will be $0.90 per assessed $1,000 property value, which is $0.01 less than in 2020. Cost to the taxpayer with a house assessed at $200,000 would be approximately $180. A second proposal on the ballot is the election of two Trustee positions on the Library’s Board of Trustees. The newly elected Library Trustees are Camille Engel and Lewis Dubuque, both will begin serving their five-year terms on January 1, 2021. The other candidates on the ballot, Charles Pensabene and Michael Thoma, both had a strong showing.
North Greenbush Public Library Update
NORTH GREENBUSH – The Board of Trustees of the North Greenbush Public Library thanks the voters of the North Greenbush Library District for their overwhelming support for the 2020 budget,” stated Board President Kenneth Bodgan, following a successful turnout for the Sept. 10 vote.
This Saturday, Sept. 26, the Friends of North Greenbush Public Library is hosting a garage sale to benefit the library at 56 Streamview Lane, Wynantskill, from 9 AM to 3 PM. The Friends’ initiatives in support of the library include fundraisers, developing community programs, and advocating for the library. Community support by ideas or membership is always welcomed. Our Virtual Book Club will meet via Zoom on Tuesday, October 13 at 6:30 PM. We will discuss “The Giver,” winner of the 1994 Newberry Award, by Lois Lowry; it was released as a movie in 2014.. Call the library to reserve a book.
Take-home craft kits have returned for the fall with a leaf suncatcher and an apple coffee filter craft kit available during Grab ‘N’ Go hours. The crafts are appropriate for ages 4+. Call the library at 518-283-0303 to arrange pick-up.
Grab ’N’ Go pick-up or appointment hours are Mon/Wed/Fri 10 AM to 2 PM, and Tue/Thur 3 PM to 7 PM. Patron appointments are limited to 20 minutes, for browsing the collection, to print, copy, or fax. For Grab ’N’ Go and appointments, call the library at 518-283-0303.
Repurposing Found Objects Into Garden Art with Denise Maurer
TROY – Master Gardener and Interior Designer Denise Maurer will be presenting a workshop entitled Repurposing Found Objects Into Garden Art on Tuesday, September 29th at 6PM, via Zoom for the Troy Public Library.
Have a lot of odd glass pieces that have been collecting dust? Learn how to make garden totems and flowers for the garden. How about an old lamp base? Wire a moss lined basket to it to transform it into a graceful planter. Discover ways to repurpose found objects into something else. We’ll share inspiration and instruction in this fun class. You’ll need to bring your creativity.

The Book Seller is Open
TROY – The Book Seller, a project of The Friends of the Troy Public Library, is open each Saturday from 10-2 at the Lansingburgh Library, 27 114th St. There are new “gently used” books on the shelf each week, and a safe environment to browse. All proceeds support programs, services and purchases which enhance the Library buildings and the experience of the patrons.

Uncovering and Recovering Race in America: A Reading and Discussion Group
TROY – On Tuesday, October 6th & 20th, November 3rd & 17th and December 1st & 15th at 6PM, Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library.
This reading and discussion group will explore the inception, inculcation, and function of race in American society. We chose this topic to improve our understanding of systematic, and social, inclusion and exclusion in American systems. Our goal is to tease out the implicit ways race serves as a real, and imagined, force in the lives of all Americans. This group will explore racial dynamics in America, centering on the intersectional forces imbedded in systematic racism to better understand the racial disparities in economics, health care and mass incarceration in America today. The first book the group will read is Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think, and Do by Jennifer L. Eberhardt. Please have this book read for the October 6th meeting.
