Caves and Caverns of New York State
Join us Wednesday, November 6th, at 6:00 pm at the Troy Public Library when Bill Cotrofeld will speak about the caves of New York State, how they were formed, early explorers and caving equipment and safety, along with a video presentation.
Bill and two high school friends in Albany, NY became interested in cave exploring (commonly known as “spelunking”), after finding a book in the Albany Public Library titled “Underground Empire” by Clay Perry of Pittsfield, Mass. Using the cave information in the book they then turned to the New York State Museum Geology Bulletins for the areas mentioned to try and locate the caves themselves. They found two early NYSM publications that had entire chapters written on the caves in several areas of New York State. Together with USGS topographic maps and the NYS Museum information they were able to locate virtually all of the now famous caves in New York State. Next was a trip to the Army- Navy Store to purchase helmets, carbide lamps, boots, etc. For the next four years Bill and his buddies spent just about every free weekend exploring the caves in the Helderberg Mountains and Schoharie Valley.
In 1956 Bill joined the National Speleological Society (NSS), an International organization composed of people interested in the study of caves (speleology) and exploring caves. Bill received his Life Membership in the NSS at his 50-Year milestone , and is now approaching his 65-Year Membership.

Daughters of the American Revolution Holds Lineage Workshop
Discover new ways to reconnect with your past, establish stronger connections to your ancestors, and build upon your rich heritage with your patriotic past. The Lineage Workshop will assist you with how to search for ancestors and their service during the American Revolution years. Interactive research methods to establish genealogy is featured. Friends of the Rensselaer Library
The Friends would like to thank all the venders and community who made our first “Sip and Sample” fundraiser on September 14th such a success. We will be having our next fundraiser “Election Day Bake Sale” on November 5th, 2019 at Rensselaer City Hall and the Rensselaer Senior Center. If you would like to support the library with making baked goods, they can be dropped off at either place from 7am to 5pm. The sale will run from 7am to 7pm. for you to get your sweets. We will also be selling raffle tickets to the American Girl Doll with the winner selected at 7pm at Rensselaer City Hall.
The next meeting of the Friends will be held on Thursday November 21st at 6:30 pm at the Rensselaer Library.. All are welcome to attend our meeting.

Looking to Write? Writing Workshop with Amy Halloran
Liberty Hyde Bailey was a wildly popular thought leader at the turn of the last century, and this newly collected book of his garden writings offers an opportunity to look at the way he looked at nature. His observation style is beautiful and contagious. In this class, at the Troy Public Library on Wednesday, November 13, 5:30-7:30 pm, we will read from his work, and use it as a prompt for our own writings. If you can, please bring a piece of nature to the library and a journal. Could be a rock, a leaf, an ear of dried corn, a stick, a cluster of pine needles — anything that catches your eye.
No writing experience necessary, just bring a desire to consider how our skills of observing can be developed.

North Chatham Free Library: Why Does the Constitution Matter?
The North Chatham Free Library has a colorful assortment of fall activities and entertainment for the month of November. On Sunday, November 10, at 3 pm, join us for “Why Does the Constitution Matter?” to discuss the role of the Constitution in everyday life with peers and a specialist in Constitutional Law. Professor Stephen Gottlieb will lead a lively debate about the day-to-day impact of this historic document. What does it mean to say the Constitution matters in this age when there are such deep differences about how to read it? And what does it mean when we say it needs to be understood under current circumstances and in context? Does it matter if people are sincere? In a way these questions really get to the heart of what role a Constitution plays in public life.
This program will give you the opportunity to dive deep into these questions, and others, with Dr. Gottlieb. As a graduate of Yale Law School, working lawyer, constitutional law professor, and author of multiple books about the Supreme Court and Constitutional law, Professor Gottlieb is well versed in how the Constitution affects our everyday lives. Needless to say it will be a fascinating and informative session closely related to political issues facing us right now. Looking to Write? 2nd Ed. Writing Workshop with Amy Halloran
Richard Selzer was a Trojan who is writing about being a doctor is still assigned in medical classes to this day. His memoir about growing up in our city is a beautiful book, and we will use segments from it to inspire our writing. For this class, please read the assignment, and walk around the city of Troy, or your own neighborhood. Take snapshots and notes. We will use the raw materials of your observations to create a small piece of writing, and explore the habit of connecting to places with words. The class will be held at the Troy Public Library on Wednesday, November 20th, 5:30-7:30 pm.
No writing experience necessary, and this class may be taken without attending the first class. The content is related but the teaching will be independent of the other session.

Nassa Library Harvest Fest – Saturday, Nov. 16
The Friends of the Nassau Free Library invite you to our second annual Harvest Fest and frozen pie sale Saturday, November 16, 2019 at the Nassau Free Library, 18 Church Street, Nassau, 12123. Come enjoy the music when you pick up your pre-ordered frozen pies, purchase baked goods, gently used Jewelry items, books (paperback & hardback), and enjoy children’s activities, and cider and apple cider donuts (for a small donation). Doors open 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Yoga Program –Troy Public Library
The Troy Public Library’s Lansingburgh Branch in conjunction with the Troy YMCA, will offer Yoga classes on Wednesdays, October 16th – November 20th at 5:30PM. This is an all-level yoga class that will invigorate your body and reduce stress. You will experience traditional yoga poses, stretching, breathing and relaxation techniques which will improve your flexibility, balance, strength and overall wellness. Please bring your own mat.
