North Greenbush Library Annual Budget and Election Vote on September 12
The Board of Trustees of the North Greenbush Public Library invites all registered voters of the Town of North Greenbush to vote in an election to be held on September 12, 2019 from 10 AM to 8 PM at the North Greenbush Public Library in the North Greenbush Municipal Building, Main Avenue, Wynantskill, NY. Absentee ballots are available from the Town Clerk of North Greenbush during regular office hours. Two issues will be decided: (1) whether the proposed budget of $319,883.31 is approved for 2020; and (2) the election of three trustees.

Pinpointing Where Your Ancestors Lived in Ireland at the Troy Public Library
The Troy Irish Genealogy Society and Old Friends Genealogy will be at the Troy Public Library on Sunday, September 15th at 1:30PM, to present their “Pinpointing Where Your Ancestors Lived in Ireland” program.
This program focuses on how one can use what is called a “shotgun approach” to finding records for your Irish ancestors who emigrated to the U.S. or elsewhere. The stage is set by talking about some critical U.S. records, (e.g. death certificates, cemetery plot cards, family bibles). Then the focus will be on the following types of Irish records:
• Personal Records: Both Roman Catholic and Protestant baptism and marriage records, 1901 and 1911 Censuses. Examples from several websites including: Roots Ireland, Irish Genealogy, Find My Past and the Ireland National Archives.
• Land Valuation Records: Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith’s Valuation (include historic maps and modern overlay maps)
• Ireland Cemetery Records: Historic Graves and other websites
• Historic Newspapers, Historical Societies and Libraries.
In addition to talking about all of the resources available in Ireland to “chase” one’s Irish ancestors, included will be lots of photos from trips to Ireland, talk about driving in Ireland and staying at B&Bs, and of course, some of that famous Irish humor along the way.

Poestenkill Library Jigsaw Sale
Stock up on jigsaw puzzles for the winter months at an unusual sale of dozens of good condition used puzzles. Proceeds will benefit the Poestenkill Library. Friends of the Library will sell puzzles as part of their Fall Market Day, Saturday September 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Library. Rain date is Sunday 9/22. Most puzzles are 1000-piece ($2), many others are 500-piece ($1), and a few are children’s puzzles (50 cents). Come to find great puzzles by White Mountain Puzzles, Wysocki, Springbok, Will Moses, Hometown, among others. Donations of puzzles may be made at the Library, 9 Plank Road, during regular hours, or contact Marcia at 518-283-5353 for pick up of multiple puzzles.
Book, Bake and Basket Sales at Poestenkill Library Fall Market Day
Plan to join your neighbors and other nice people from neighboring towns at the Friends of the Poestenkill Library Fall Market Day on the Library lawn, Saturday September 21. The library is next to Town Hall at 9 Plank Road, Poestenkill. The rain date is Sunday September 22. The hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sale items include baked goods, many hundreds of used books, chances on spectacular gift baskets, and a huge inventory of good quality used jigsaw puzzles. While visiting you can browse the Poestenkill Farmers Market on the Town Hall lawn and find something for lunch. Please help the Library with donations of baked goods and puzzles. French Film Screening at The Troy Public Library
Join us at the Troy Public Library on Saturday, September 21st at 1PM as the La Fédération franco-américaine du New York begins their 2019-20 film series with the screening of the film “The Jewish Cardinal.” (NR 96 min.)
The Jewish Cardinal tells the amazing true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger, the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, who maintained his cultural identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism and joining the priesthood. Lustiger was appointed Archbishop of Paris by Pope Jean Paul II – and found a new platform to celebrate his dual identity as a Catholic Jew. When nuns plan to build a convent within the walls of Auschwitz, Lustiger may be forced at last to choose his side.

Children’s Festival and Book Sale
The Children’s Festival at the East Greenbush Community Library will feature bounce rides, face painting, balloon animals and more awesome activities for children of all ages! This free yearly event will take place on Saturday, September 21 from 10am – 3pm.
Also at the library on Saturday, the Children’s Book Sale takes place from 9am – 4pm. The children’s book sale is only held once a year, so plan ahead for birthdays and holidays and take this opportunity to stock up! There will be a great selection of gently used children’s books available for purchase at prices ranging from $.25 to $1, CDs and DVDs are $1 and $2. Only cash and checks are accepted.
The Book Sale continues on Sunday September 22 with a bag sale from 1pm – 3pm. For only $4 fill your own reusable shopping tote or a Hannaford plastic bag. The Children’s Festival and Book Sale are sponsored by the Friends of the East Greenbush Community Library. The Friends is a nonprofit, volunteer organization committed to creating broad community support for the library. Proceeds from the book sale directly support library programs and services that benefit patrons and community members.

Painting & Poetry
If you love the imagery in literature – and think it would be fun to recreate some of it – this class is for you! Local artist Muse en Lystrala will be teaching a literature-rooted art class in which the imagery of a piece of literature will be discussed, and then brought to life using Renaissance and Impressionist methods with acrylic paint as a medium.
The class will be held on Monday, September 23, 5:30-7:30 pm at the Main Library, and repeated on Tuesday, October 15, 4:30-6:30 pm at the Lansingburgh Branch.
Muse en Lystrala is a musician, artist, game developer, and literature enthusiast. She previously instructed a community art class called Dark Arts Paint, and among many other tasks creates music and art assets at her company, Queenship Game Studio. She lives and works in Troy.
This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.

Uncovering and Recovering Race in America: A Reading and Discussion Group
On Tuesday, September 24th at 6PM, Professor Jennifer Thompson Burns will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library.
This reading and discussion group will explore the inception, inculcation, and function of race in American society. We chose this topic to improve our understanding of systematic, and social, inclusion and exclusion in American systems. Our goal is to tease out the implicit ways race serves as a real, and imagined, force in the lives of all Americans. The September title that the group will read is Stamped from the Beginning: the definitive history of racist ideas in America by Ibram X Kendi.

Advertisements for seemingly “natural cures” are everywhere. From essential oils to St. Johns Wort to “ionized water,” it seems like something new is being touted as a cheap cure for every problem one can face. But what does the science say? Are popular supplements safe or effective? How can you evaluate evidence? Join us at the Troy Public Library, Wednesday, September 25th at 6:00 pm, for this presentation which discusses popular supplements, the science surrounding them, and resources to help you choose wisely. A Q&A session follows.
