Brought to Light: Unearthing the History of an African-American Cemetery in Kinderhook, NY is a one-hour documentary that tells the story of how the cleanup efforts by a few villagers of some stone markers in an overgrown field lead to the rediscovery of a forgotten, “slaves’ cemetery” in which hundreds of African Americans were buried during the 1800s. It features the archaeological dig to place the interpretive sign, a Ground Penetrating Radar Survey conducted at the site, moving excerpts from the 2017 cemetery rededication ceremony, and a dramatization involving oral history and the Underground Railroad.
Film maker Barbara Reina will present the film and hold a Q and A after the screening. All are welcome to attend.

Do you have your SUMMER READING planned? The Friends of the Nassau Free Library announce the Spring Book and Bake Sale to be held Friday, June 7th; and Saturday, June 8th, at the Nassau Free Library, 18 Church Street, Nassau, NY 12123. Hours for the sale will be Friday 5:00 – 8:00 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Library. Children’s books and paperbacks will also be for sale on 50 Elm Street on Saturday only. Author Visit and Book Discussion with Virginia Eubanks
On Wednesday, June 26th, at 6PM, Professor Virginia Eubanks will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library.

Mr. Ferris and His Fabulous Wheel: The Troy Connections
On Friday, June 28th, at 6PM, during Troy Night Out, P. Thomas Carroll, will be at the Troy Public Library to discuss George Ferris and His Fabulous Wheel.
When the first-ever Ferris Wheel went into operation at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago on 21 June 1893, it was an instant sensation, attracting 1.6 million riders in under 5 months.
Few people know, however, that the wheel’s inventor, George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., used to live in Troy, New York, and in all likelihood, he patterned his famous wheel after a well-known industrial device right here in Troy. This talk will tell the tale of that first wheel’s triumphant appearance, document all we know about its Troy connections, and then tell the sad tale of its later ignominious demise in St. Louis.

Marvin has been collecting seals from various cities, town, counties and villages for over 40 years and has a vast collection. He has compiled several books based on various topics based on these seals. Many coastal cities and towns adopted a Steamship as their official seal representing their seagoing heritage.
