Friends of Nassau Free Library Book & Bake Sale
Do you have your SUMMER READING planned? The Friends of the Nassau Free Library announce the Spring Book and Bake Sale to be held Friday, June 7th; and Saturday, June 8th, at the Nassau Free Library, 18 Church Street, Nassau, NY 12123. Hours for the sale will be Friday 5:00 – 8:00 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Library. Children’s books and paperbacks will also be for sale on 50 Elm Street on Saturday only. Donations of gently used books, both hard back and paperback, are now being accepted at the library. Please no textbooks or encyclopedias and all deliveries should be during library hours. Also, baked goods donations for the sale will be much appreciated and may be brought to the library beginning Friday, June 7th, up to 5:00 PM (for Friday sale) or no later than 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 8th. Author Visit and Book Discussion with Virginia Eubanks
On Wednesday, June 26th, at 6PM, Professor Virginia Eubanks will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library.
In Automating Inequality, Virginia Eubanks systematically investigates the impacts of data mining, policy algorithms, and predictive risk models on poor and working-class people in America. “This book is downright scary,” says Naomi Klein, “but with its striking research and moving, indelible portraits of life in the ‘digital poorhouse,’ you will emerge smarter and more empowered to demand justice.” Join us for a … rousing conversation about this timely and provocative book. Mr. Ferris and His Fabulous Wheel: The Troy Connections
On Friday, June 28th, at 6PM, during Troy Night Out, P. Thomas Carroll, will be at the Troy Public Library to discuss George Ferris and His Fabulous Wheel.
When the first-ever Ferris Wheel went into operation at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago on 21 June 1893, it was an instant sensation, attracting 1.6 million riders in under 5 months.
Few people know, however, that the wheel’s inventor, George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., used to live in Troy, New York, and in all likelihood, he patterned his famous wheel after a well-known industrial device right here in Troy. This talk will tell the tale of that first wheel’s triumphant appearance, document all we know about its Troy connections, and then tell the sad tale of its later ignominious demise in St. Louis.

Nassau Free Library Presents: America’s Steamship Heritage in our Official City Seals
Monday, June 10- 6:30pm
Storytelling by Local Author: Marvin Bubie
Marvin has been collecting seals from various cities, town, counties and villages for over 40 years and has a vast collection. He has compiled several books based on various topics based on these seals. Many coastal cities and towns adopted a Steamship as their official seal

What’s Happening at the Clark Art Institute Talk at The Troy Public Library

Music Fundamentals
Join us at the Troy Public Library for this 5 part class to take place Tuesdays, June 4- July 2, at 6:00- 7:00 pm. Music Fundamentals is a pre-music theory class intended for students applying to music programs or conservatories to prepare them for first-year music theory, for those interested in a general music class, or those who just want to brush up on the basics! Music Fundamentals will consist of 5 lessons featuring music reading and notation, ear and intervals training, constructing musical scales and modes, and other topics.
The Music Fundamentals class is taught by musician and composer Muse en Lystrala. She has studied music at Rhode Island College, the Worcester Academy of Music, the Sibelius Academy Open University, and SUNY Schenectady. Muse directs classical ensemble Geek Musica, a group specializing in the performance of video game and film music and is the executive director and lead composer at Queenship Game Studio. She lives and works in Troy.

Pulitzer “Campfire” Readings and Discussion Group
On Wednesdays, June 5th and 19th, at 6PM, Professor Tom Bulger will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library.
For a hundred years, the Pulitzer Prize has been a leader in recognizing excellence in American journalism, letters, drama, and music. Celebrate the centennial of the Pulitzer Prizes with this reading and discussion theme, featuring five novels that won the award for literature. Each novel in this series resonates with our contemporary moment, by looking at how authors have depicted our struggles to better ourselves and achieve the American dream — and how, despite our efforts, we can end of up unfulfilled or at odds with other elements of society. The next selection, Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, is available at the check-out desk at the Main Library. New members are welcome!
