Town of North Greenbush Christmas Parade

Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas might be a bit too early and we don’t want to rush Fall. Plans are well underway for our annual Town of North Greenbush Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 2nd. Each year the parade gets bigger and this year, we want it to be our most spectacular yet.

So, if you are interested in participating in the parade with a beautifully decorated float, tractor, old fashioned car, vehicle or boat, walk with your business or would like to be a sponsor of the event, please contact Deputy Supervisor Kelly Hoffman or Councilwoman Jessica Merola at (518) 283-5313, Ext 5.

We will have cookies, hot chocolate, a Christmas T-shirt give aways and a beautiful opportunity to purchase our first ever Town of North Greenbush Christmas ornament.

At the conclusion of the parade, our annual Starry Night Memorial Christmas Tree event will start with our choir of angels singing, reading of the names and lighting of the beautiful trees.

It’s a touching ceremony that has become so very popular and meaningful. We couldn’t end the night without seeing SANTA! Bring your list of things you want to ask as we know the children in North Greenbush are always on the good list. Please sign up soon!

Sand Lake Town Library is partnering with Vanguard, Inc.-ASO, the volunteer wing of the Albany Symphony Orchestra, in a used musical instrument drive benefiting needy public school students in the Capital Region.

The event takes place on Saturday, November 4th from 10 am to 1 pm at the Sand Lake Town Library, 8428 Miller Hill Road, Averill Park.

All instruments collected will be given to 13 local school districts that lack sufficient instruments for hundreds of students whose families cannot afford the expensive rental or purchase fees.

Your tax-deductible donations enable these enthusiastic, music-loving children to study music in depth and play in their school orchestras or bands.

Children’s attendance and grades often improve and they gain self-discipline, crucial life skills, companionship, pride, and much joy playing music alongside their peers. 771 instruments have been collected and distributed to date.

We cannot accept pianos, banjos, or ukuleles. For further information, please call (518) 439-1843 or jrrif@nullaol.com.

Nassau Library Seeks Increase in Funding

Do you know about the 414 vote on the upcoming November ballot?

This year New York State law allows taxpayers to choose on Election Day, November 7th, how much will be spent on Nassau Library services.

The proposition on the ballot will ask that funding be set at $123,225 per year. There has been ZERO increase since 2006. Yet, the Nassau Free Library served 2,884 borrowers in 2022 and loaned nearly 12,500 materials in that time.

That’s DOUBLE the loans from 2018.

What will it cost the average taxpayer?

Currently, taxpayers whose property is assessed at $100,000 contribute an average $45-$50 per year for library services. If the 414 Proposition is passed, that cost will only increase to approximately $65 per year.

That much for access to over 1,500,000 books, CD’s, magazines, digital downloads, and more!

The library also provides public computers, faxing and copying services, programs for all ages, meeting spaces, Wi-Fi hotspots, and museum passes too!

Questions? More information can be found at www.nassaufreelibrary.org.

Grassland Birds in North Greenbush

Prairie bird species are facing extinction, both in the prairies and elsewhere. We can help them survive and thrive in our northeastern hayfields, pastures, and fields. Only about 3% of the natural grasslands of the midwestern prairies remain.

Volunteer ecologists of the Capital District Friday Field Group surveyed grasslands in the Town of North Greenbush on June 25, 2022. They were looking for birds ranked as the highest priority for conservation, that could be living there. They include bobolink, eastern meadowlark, grasshopper sparrow, Savannah sparrow, and American kestrel.

Dr. David Hunt (who died March 24, 2023) led the survey of 9 sites, including the Parker School, Lape Road, Geiser Road, and Snyder’s Lake Road. David’s extensive background material and field notes regarding this survey are not currently accessible, so here is what I jotted down from the survey team’s findings.

One meadowlark was possibly sighted at the Parker School. None of the other high priority grassland birds were found. Some of the birds found included: song sparrow, American flycatcher, cardinal, American crow, tree swallow, red winged blackbird, American robin, yellow bellied sapsucker, turkey buzzard, bluebird, field sparrow, catbird, American goldfinch, and, in an adjacent marsh, song or swamp sparrow. In buildings adjacent to grasslands, English sparrow and barn swallow were found. The survey was funded in part by a grant from the New York Yearly Meeting (Quaker) Earthcare Fund (NYYM.org).

Rens. Co. grasslands are mapped on the 2018 Rensselaer County Conservation Plan (RCCP) prepared by the Rensselaer Land Trust. The survey discovered that much of the North Greenbush grasslands identified in the RCCP are now covered with houses. Many of the other grasslands had been mowed, which destroys nests.

We can help endangered birds by preserving our grasslands and leaving them unmowed till July 4, so they have time to raise their families.
