Rensselaer County Legislature Majority- October Report

The Rensselaer County Legislature took several steps to upgrade the operation of the county wastewater treatment plant at their October meeting. The county has received nearly $10M in state grants to overhaul the aeration system at the plant and make other vital improvements that include a back-up generator to keep the operation running during a power failure.

The Legislature was required to issue a bond for the project that is estimated to cost over $14 million and will result in a much improved treatment process that will save significant energy. The equipment that will be replaced is original to the plant that was built in the early 1970’s.

At the beginning of the meeting, Chairwoman Kelly Hoffman welcomed Troy Police Department K-9 Norbi and his handler Sgt. Kris Daurio. The Majority Legislators had requested their presence so that they could honor them for the heroic efforts of Norbi who was stabbed 12 times after capturing a robber. Norbi enjoyed the spotlight and the bag of treats and toys from the Legislature.

In addition to the general agenda items, the Majority also adopted two important resolutions that urged federal and state officials to take action. The first urged Governor Kathy Hochul to end the new background checks and fees that were imposed on legal gun owners in September, and to focus on law enforcement efforts to fight the trafficking of illegal guns and the negative impacts of bail reforms. The legislature reaffirmed its commitment to protect the constitutional rights of legal gun owners.

The second resolution urged President Biden to secure our nation’s borders against the flow of illegal entries and supported the county executive’s emergency declaration to keep illegal migrants in declared sanctuary cities, not in Rensselaer County. The resolution included Governor Hochul’s plea, “If you are going to leave your country, go somewhere else..we are out of space”.

Both resolutions passed 11-6 with all Democrats from Troy voting against.

Nassau Library to Ask Voters for Funding Increase

Do you know about the 414 vote on the upcoming november ballot?

New York State law allows taxpayers to choose on Election Day how much a municipality will spend on local library services. There has been ZERO increase since 2006. Yet, the Nassau Free Library served 2,884 borrowers in 2022 and loaned nearly 12,500 materials in that time. That’s DOUBLE the loans from 2018.

What will it cost me?

Currently, taxpayers contribute approximately 50 cents per day. If the 414 Vote is passed, that cost will only increase to 54 cents per day. That much for access to over 1,500,000 books, CD’s, magazines, digital downloads, and more! The library also provides public computers, faxing and copying services, programs for all ages, meeting spaces, Wi-Fi hotspots, and museum passes too!

Questions? Come to an information session at the library on October 23rd at 6 pm.

Albany Walk to End Alzheimer’s

The Alzheimer’s Association, Northeastern New York chapter is hosting its 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Albany on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Siena College. Participants may check in beginning at 10:00 a.m. with an opening ceremony at 11:00 a.m. The walk will begin immediately following the opening ceremony.

On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease. During the ceremony, walkers will carry flowers of various colors, each color symbolizing their personal connection to the disease.

“This Walk means so much to the community – to those living with the disease, to those providing care, to those who have lost someone to the disease,” said Andrew Sagarin, Development Events Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Northeastern New York chapter. “Walk is a reminder that we’re fighting for a different future. We are closer than ever before to ending this disease, but we have more work left.

“We hope that everyone impacted in our community will join us by starting a Walk team. By helping us raise awareness and funds, our chapter can continue to provide free care and support services for families facing the disease today, as well as invest in research to finally find a cure,” said Sagarin.

More than 6 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease, including 410,000 New Yorkers. It’s not only a leading cause of death in the U.S., more than 11 million family members and friends provide unpaid care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The Albany Walk is supported by local presenting sponsor, The Kerry Crew Charitable Gift Fund. The goal for this year’s Albany walk is to raise $350,000.

Grassland Birds in North Greenbush

Prairie bird species are facing extinction, both in the prairies and elsewhere. We can help them survive and thrive in our northeastern hayfields, pastures, and fields. Only about 3% of the natural grasslands of the midwestern prairies remain.

Volunteer ecologists of the Capital District Friday Field Group surveyed grasslands in the Town of North Greenbush on June 25, 2022. They were looking for birds ranked as the highest priority for conservation, that could be living there. They include bobolink, eastern meadowlark, grasshopper sparrow, Savannah sparrow, and American kestrel.

Dr. David Hunt (who died March 24, 2023) led the survey of 9 sites, including the Parker School, Lape Road, Geiser Road, and Snyder’s Lake Road. David’s extensive background material and field notes regarding this survey are not currently accessible, so here is what I jotted down from the survey team’s findings.

One meadowlark was possibly sighted at the Parker School. None of the other high priority grassland birds were found. Some of the birds found included: song sparrow, American flycatcher, cardinal, American crow, tree swallow, red winged blackbird, American robin, yellow bellied sapsucker, turkey buzzard, bluebird, field sparrow, catbird, American goldfinch, and, in an adjacent marsh, song or swamp sparrow. In buildings adjacent to grasslands, English sparrow and barn swallow were found. The survey was funded in part by a grant from the New York Yearly Meeting (Quaker) Earthcare Fund (NYYM.org).

Rens. Co. grasslands are mapped on the 2018 Rensselaer County Conservation Plan (RCCP) prepared by the Rensselaer Land Trust. The survey discovered that much of the North Greenbush grasslands identified in the RCCP are now covered with houses. Many of the other grasslands had been mowed, which destroys nests.

We can help endangered birds by preserving our grasslands and leaving them unmowed till July 4, so they have time to raise their families.

RPA Book Club October Meeting

Tuesday, October 24 at 7pm on Zoom

For October 2023, we will read Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, in any edition. First published by Houghton Mifflin in 1962, Silent Spring alerted a large audience to the environmental and human dangers of indiscriminate use of pesticides, spurring revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. “Silent Spring became a runaway bestseller, with international reverberations . . . [It is] well crafted, fearless and succinct . . . Even if she had not inspired a generation of activists, Carson would prevail as one of the greatest nature writers in American letters” (Peter Matthiessen, for Time’s 100 Most Influential People of the Century).

This book is available through the Upper Hudson Library System, at Market Block Books, and through other book sellers.

Hudson-Mohawk Weavers’ Guild Welcomes Public to 45th Annual Show & Sale

What’s soft, fuzzy, silky, simple, complex and more? Handwoven fabric! The Hudson-Mohawk Weavers’ Guild invites the public to visit its 45th Annual Show & Sale to experience all that and more. This popular event continues to grow each year, and the Guild expects ~800 visitors over three days, with attendees coming from across the entire Northeast.

The event will be held Nov 10-12 at Pat’s Barn in North Greenbush. The Show & Sale will feature ongoing demonstrations of both weaving and spinning, using a variety of looms, spinning wheels and spindles, allow the public to learn more about weaving and spinning. The event is staffed entirely by volunteers from the Guild, who can explain more about the textiles on display and share their love for this craft with the public.

Pat’s Barn offers a historic setting with expanded room for displays and demonstrations. Admission and off-street parking are free. The Show & Sale will have two full floors of exhibits, including: housewares such as rugs, blankets and table linens, garments such as scarves, shawls and jackets, as well as holiday gifts. The event features a wide range of options suitable for everyone’s holiday shopping list and budget.

Weavers’ Guild President Jan Rowell says, “We are looking forward to another opportunity to connect with the community and share our love for handmade textiles, including the new things we learned at MAFA 2023. We will also have information on local teachers and resources, as we find that every year many people are inspired to take up weaving after they see the amazing creations on display.”

Pickleball Rensselaer County Has Partnered with The Rensselaer Boys And Girls Club

Together we are offing indoor pickleball at 544 Broadway, Rensselaer NY. There are three courts available Tuesday – Friday. Two sessions, Oct – Feb 9th and Feb 12 – June 14th. Each session has a choice of Tues / Thurs or Weds / Fri combination. Each day has Morning 9:15 – 11:30 and Afternoon 11:45 – 2 pm time slots. Two days and week with two hours of court time a day.

We only schedule six players per court. You can opt to continue to play among your scheduled court players or mix out among the other courts if they choice to do so. If availability allows you can sign up six players to one court. We do this because everyone’s court time is important, how you choose to mix / rotate among the others on court is your choice.

Unfortunately at the moment we are not offering lessons or evening indoor pickleball. However, these are goals we are working towards.

For more information, or to sign up visit us Tuesday – Friday between 10 – 1 pm at the Rensselaer Boys and Girls Club.
