Albany Walk to End Alzheimer’s

The Alzheimer’s Association, Northeastern New York chapter is hosting its 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Albany on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Siena College. Participants may check in beginning at 10:00 a.m. with an opening ceremony at 11:00 a.m. The walk will begin immediately following the opening ceremony.

On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease. During the ceremony, walkers will carry flowers of various colors, each color symbolizing their personal connection to the disease.

“This Walk means so much to the community – to those living with the disease, to those providing care, to those who have lost someone to the disease,” said Andrew Sagarin, Development Events Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Northeastern New York chapter. “Walk is a reminder that we’re fighting for a different future. We are closer than ever before to ending this disease, but we have more work left.

“We hope that everyone impacted in our community will join us by starting a Walk team. By helping us raise awareness and funds, our chapter can continue to provide free care and support services for families facing the disease today, as well as invest in research to finally find a cure,” said Sagarin.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The Albany Walk is supported by local presenting sponsor, The Kerry Crew Charitable Gift Fund. The goal for this year’s Albany walk is to raise $350,000.

Community Reachout!

Warm greetings from your friends at Sand Lake Baptist Church.

Last week we had a very exciting and blessed event! The AP Football team gathered for their traditional dinner prior to their opening Home Game, and did so in our Fellowship Hall!

The opportunity to see these young athletes break bread and fellowship was a true blessing.

After a short while of shaking hands and some brief, casual small talk, it was very apparent that they were not your average teenagers.

They are very mature, intelligent and warm hearted, indeed. Any return visit in the future, collectively or individually, would be welcomed and a pleasure. The coaches of course, are also most welcome to pay us a visit. I extend to all an open invitation every Sunday at 11 AM for service. On behalf of our church, I pray that Averill Park has a safe and winning season!

Upcoming events include participation in the Town Wide Garage Sale on Saturday, September 16th from 8AM to 3PM.

Our members have donated many items that include books, furniture and a wide variety of household and craft items.

More items are donated daily. In addition, we will be offering baked goods, cold drinks, fellowship and food from the grill! All proceeds will help fund our parsonage repairs and a new furnace.

We have several more community events in the planning stages, so I would encourage you to look for more information in future articles as well as a visit to our website at www.sandlakebaptistchurch.org and Sand Lake Baptist Church FaceBook page.

The best visit, of course, would be an in person visit! Several opportunities exist in Thursday evening bible study at 6PM and Sunday morning service at 11AM.

All are welcome and I pray that the spirit will bring you to us.

God bless, Deacon Russ

RPA Event: Virtual Volunteer Orientation

Tuesday, September 19, 2023, 7pm – 8pm on Zoom.

About this event: Volunteers are central to RPA’s success. Volunteers lead outings, help in the office, maintain community forest trails, assist with planning and organizing our annual gala event, and so much more.

We are grateful for our volunteers who generously donate their time to support RPA’s mission across the Rensselaer Plateau.

Whether you’re a new volunteer or continuing one, we’d like to invite you to an upcoming volunteer orientation, where we cover the basics of what you need to do to become a volunteer – and for current volunteers, some new opportunities you might want to plug into.

What to expect: Here are some topics we’ll cover: Background on RPA’s history; Overview of volunteer opportunities; Getting involved with Rensselaer Youth Outdoors (RYO); Hear from current volunteer leaders; Next steps.

Attending this orientation session is the first step for new volunteers. If you’re a continuing volunteer, THANK YOU.

Attending this volunteer orientation is not required, but you are warmly invited to attend if you’d like to meet some new like-minded people and join the conversation.

If you have questions or would like more information, contact RPA Volunteer Coordinator Kim Murdick at kim@nullrensselaerplateau.org.

For September 2023, we will read What an Owl Knows: The New Science of the World’s Most Enigmatic Birds by Jennifer Ackerman.

For millennia, owls have captivated and intrigued us.

Our fascination with these mysterious birds was first documented more than thirty thousand years ago in the Chauvet Cave paintings in southern France.

With their forward gaze and quiet flight, owls are often a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and foresight. But what does an owl really know?

And what do we really know about owls? Though our fascination goes back centuries, scientists have only recently begun to understand in deep detail the complex nature of these extraordinary birds.

RPA Speaker Series Presents, Beekeeping for Beginners: Protecting Honey and Mason Bees

Beekeeping for Beginners: Protecting Honey and Mason Bees with Judi Bogardus. Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 7pm on Zoom.

The plight of the honey bee has often made headlines, but what about the approximately 4000 species of bees that reside in the United States? With a diverse population of social and solitary bees in New York State, we have an opportunity to make a difference in the survival of pollinators and plants. Judi will be comparing the similarities and differences of the popular honey bee and lesser known mason bee, including a brief look at a year of their life, the different pollination techniques, requirements to raise each, and, more importantly, how we may help both survive.

Pre-registration is required. The suggested voluntary donation is $5, though any amount is welcome. To register, head to www.rensselaerplateau.org/events.

Fall Cemetery Open House Events

Knowledgeable and compassionate Family Advisors will be on hand to give individual or group pre-planning tours and discuss the many burial, cremation and memorialization options available for you and your loved ones within our 20+ cemeteries. Enjoy light refreshments while meeting our staff.

September 16, 10am – 1pm: Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 2501 Troy Rd. Niskayuna, 12309

September 30, 10am – 1pm: St. Agnes Cemetery, 48 Cemetery Ave. Menands, 12204

Founded at the height of the Roaring 20s, Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna was designed with a modern take on a rural cemetery. The classic 1920’s style of clean stylized lines accentuated by captivating special features is reflected throughout the cemetery, making the cemetery easily accessible and attractive. The cemetery has been perfectly maintained for nearly a century. Visit us for our Open House on Sept. 16.

The St. Agnes Open House on Sept. 30th features the debut of St. Brigid’s Garden section within Historic St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands. Be one of the first families to purchase space in this beautiful section! Incorporating spectacular views of grand Victorian era monuments, St. Brigid’s was developed in honor of the former St. Brigid’s Church founded in 1850. The beloved Church served Catholics living in the Port Schuyler section of Watervliet for over 160 years. Generations of families married and had their children baptized there. Though the Church held its final mass on June 25, 2011, it will always be a cherished piece of Watervliet’s history as it lives on in the memories of many near and far from their hometown. Our newly developed burial lots allow former parishioners of St. Brigid’s Church to come full circle and rest in peace in a lovely, historic section of St. Agnes Cemetery.

Unable to attend our Fall Open House events? Contact us to schedule an in-person or virtual appointment at (518) 350-7676 or Info@nullADCemeteries.org.
