Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic Event Answers Income Tax Questions

Please join the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York’s Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) for a virtual Town Hall on income tax issues. This event is on December 15, 2022, from noon to 1pm. Participants can join via the LASNNY Facebook page, Zoom or by phone. The program is free and pre-registration is not required.

Clinic attorneys will explain the Earned Income Tax Credit, who can claim children on a tax return, and health insurance deductions for self-employed people. Other topics include how to pursue missing refunds and options to consider if you have a tax debt you cannot afford. Speakers will share free tax preparation resources and e-filing services available in the community. Staff will also discuss the Clinic’s services. The public is invited to submit their income tax questions.

Guy Falkenheimer is a licensed USCG Captain, member of the American Boat & Yacht Council and recreational/commercial boat surveyor. Join us at the Castleton Boat Club as he discusses the art and practice of professional marine surveying. Guy has been inspecting pleasure and commercial craft for over 20 years.

If you own a boat, may be buying or selling, or are interested in becoming a marine surveyor, this is the perfect opportunity to learn about how it’s done!

Admission $10 per person. Dinner included – Catering by The Hill Restaurant in Castleton.

6-7 PM Dinner and Cocktails. 7 PM Lecture in the Pavilion. Cash Bar.

Lights in our Park

Schodack Island State Park will be having a “Lights in our park” event on December 21st 4-6:30 pm. We are looking for individuals or groups or businesses can request a campsite to decorate and show off to people who drive through the campground the night of the event. 

We will be giving out brochures of who decorated which site so people can have their work recognized. This event is free! Decorating the sites will begin December 11th and go up until the event start. 

The sites are electric, you would just need to provide your own lights, inflatables, yard ornaments, decorated vehicles, campers, etc. to decorate a site with.

Yankee Doodle Band Comes to Grafton December 10, Free Concert

Please join us for Grafton’s second annual Holiday Cookie Contest! There will be great music by the Yankee Doodle band. The YD Band will be playing some of your favorite holiday songs including a mash up of Stars & Stripes interwoven with well-known Christmas songs. It’s sure to get your feet stomping one moment and you singing along to one of your favorite carols the next!

We hope to see you at our free concert Saturday, December 10, 2022 from 4 – 6 PM at Roxborough Holdings (former Grafton Elementary School) Rte. 2 & Babcock Lake Road, Grafton, NY. Bring 12 of your favorite homemade Holiday cookies and maybe you’ll win a special holiday prize! Come enjoy the music, sample the holiday cookies and feel free to sing along or get up & dance. We hope to see you December 10!

A Northern Lights Noel

Capital Community Voices will present “A Northern Lights Noel,” a program of classical carols and popular holiday songs on Sunday, December 18th at 3:00 pm at Genet Elementary School, Route 4, East Greenbush, NY.

The program will feature carols from places from which the aurora borealis can be experienced including Norway, Sweden, and Russia and the state of Alaska. Popular holiday selections will include the Polar Express medley, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, and White Christmas. The audience will have an opportunity to sing along with traditional carols.

The chorus is directed by Julie Panke and will be accompanied by Malcolm Kogut, piano, Randy Jennings, bass, and James Iacketta, percussion.

Ticket prices for the concert are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students.

4-H invites all youth ages 5-19 to get a 4-H experience through our Winter Fairs:

Saturday, December 10th 4:00pm – 6:00pm at the Salem United Methodist Church, 349 Shaver Rd, West Sand Lake; hosted by the Green Earthlings 4-H Club Friday. Event is free with a donation of a canned good. 

Or

Friday, December 16th, 6:00 to 8:00pm Brittonkill/Tamarac Elementary School Cafeteria hosted by the Clover Kids and Critters 4-H Club. 

Event is free- (pizza will be provided at $1 per slice with pre-order only at Tamarac location)

Both locations will have a community service project, a place to drop off canned goods to donate to a food pantry, and a holiday related project that can be made and judged on location by entering in the Winter Fair. 

It is extremely important to RSVP- if we have to cancel due to weather we will contact participants- please email Eileen at emd32@nullcornell.edu or leave Kandis a message at 518-720-0354- with name, phone number, how many youth will be participating at the event, which location you plan on attending WSL or Brunswick, and how many slices of pizza if attending Brunswick.

A Reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol Presentation

On December 10, 2022 Evangelical Lutheran Church of Poestenkill, 772 Route 351, Poestenkill, NY will host the Poestenkill Light Reading Company’s presentation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. 

The night will begin with a homemade soup and bread dinner at 5:00 pm with the production at 6:30 pm. All are welcome to attend. Those who wish to attend the soup and bread dinner are asked to call (518) 283-6045 and leave a message. 

Reservations are not mandatory but encouraged so we have enough food. There is no charge, but donations of a non-perishable food item and/or monetary gift to the Bread of Life Food Pantry or the Union Gospel Food Pantry in East Poestenkill will be accepted and appreciated.

Winter Craft and Food Festival

Our fourth annual Winter Craft and Food Festival will be held on Saturday, December 10 from 9 AM to 2 PM at First Reformed Church, located at the corner of Main Avenue and Church Street, in Wynantskill. 

You will be greeted with free donuts and hot beverages, while supplies last. Browse our beautiful, handcrafted items, our Second Chances (new or gently used) items, and take a chance to win a beautiful, homemade queen-size quilt. We will also feature home-canned pickles, jams, salsas, relish, pickled beets, chili sauce, and more! Our bake sale will feature lots of homemade goodies, specialty royal icing cookies, and platters of Christmas cookies. 

Hot soup/chili will be available to eat-in or take home. And let’s not forget our homemade, then frozen, entrees – perfect for quick, microwave meals during the busy holiday season – lasagna, shepherd’s pie, chicken potpie, macaroni and cheese, and complete pork dinners – sized for both families and singles.

Green Island Rod & Gun Club Indoor 3D & Vegas Shoots!

 The indoor 3D shoot will begin on Friday, Jan.6th. Fast line will start@ 6:00pm, Reg. 7:00pm.

 Saturday 8:00am- 12:00 noon. The fee will be $5.00.

 The kitchen will be open for food & beverages !

 The shoot will run for 10 weeks!

 Indoor Vegas Shoot will begin on Tuesday,  Jan.10th.@ 6:30 pm! The fee will be $5.00 (The kitchen will not be open ).

Sand Lake Historical Society Opens Exhibit

“Home for the Holidays”, an exhibit by the Sand Lake Historical Society, has opened in the Gallery at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts, 2880 NY 43, Averill Park. 

The exhibit features items from the Society’s and the Town of Sand Lake’s collections. Also prominent is “Wish You Were Home Tree” which honors area residents currently serving in the military, as submitted by friends and family members. Please keep these and all men and women of the military (and their families!) in your thoughts and prayers this holiday season. Other display items include a “Sand Lake Then and Now” photo wall, military artifacts, and other memorabilia donated over the years by current and former Sand Lake residents. 

The exhibit gallery is open Saturdays, from noon to 3:00 PM through December 17th and anytime the Center for the Arts is open for events and performances in November and December. Don’t miss it!
