Grafton Lakes State Park to host Fall Fun Day
GRAFTON – Do you love fall? So do we! Come out the day before Halloween to enjoy fall activities at Grafton Lakes State Park. Activities will include a “build-a-bat”, s’mores, crafts, pumpkin painting, costume contest, and more! All festivities will begin at 3pm at the Welcome Center and run until 5:45pm.
A family friendly movie will start at 6pm in the parking lot. Do you have a favorite family friendly Halloween movie? Find us on Facebook to vote on which movie we should select! Bring snacks, your favorite chair, and warm layers for this unique event.

The Reformed Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill Trunk or Treat
SCHODACK – The Reformed Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill, located at 902 Schodack Landing Rd., will be hosting a Trunk or Treat on October 31st, between 4-6 PM. Come check out the Halloween decorations while enjoying some cider and donuts…and candy, of course! All are welcome! West Sand Lake Vol. Fire Company Halloween Party/Parade
WEST SAND LAKE – Calling all ghosts and witches and ghouls and goblins (and Pokemon and Princesses, too)! The witching hour is at hand! Once again, the time has come to dress in all your spooky finery, and invade West Sand Lake.
The West Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Co. is sponsoring its annual Halloween party for kids of all ages on Sunday, October 31. As in previous years, we are planning a special treat for all our trick-or-treaters, and their parents. We will be proudly featuring our community’s costume creations in a parade from the West Sand Lake Elementary school to our Fire House.
If you would like to join our parade, please meet at the school at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 31st. We will step off promptly at 1:00 p.m., and proceed to the Fire House. The traditional Halloween party, with costume judging, prizes, games, refreshments and surprises will immediately follow the end of the parade. As always, admission to the party is free! Please NOTE: Masks or appropriate face coverings will be required at all times.
So, plan on joining us on Sunday, October 31st. It promises to be a fun time for all!
Trunk or Treat at Saint John’s Episcopal Church
TROY – Saint John’s is hosting its second annual Trunk or Treat on Halloween, Sunday, October 31, from 2:00 – 4:00pm. Come bring kids up to age 12 to receive “treats” as they visit the elaborately-decorated “trunks” of cars, truck, and vans, parked in the parking lot of Saint John’s, directly across from the church. It promises to be a fun time for all, and a chance to enjoy the creativity of the trunks on display as well as the imagination of the children’s costumes.

Town of North Greenbush Halloween Parade
NORTH GREENBUSH – The Town of North Greenbush Halloween Spectacular will be held on Sunday, October 31st. First, we will kick-off the events with our annual parade starting at 2pm from the Family Dollar parking lot on Main Ave. The parade will proceed down Main Ave to Town Hall. There will be lots of new and exciting events planned including a “Trunk or Treat” at town hall. For those who don’t know, the “trunk-or-treat” event will have participants decorate their vehicles and park them in one central location at town hall. The cars are just as decked out as the kids and then everyone goes from decorated trunk to decorated trunk to pick up some treats while having fun looking at all of the decorations. There will be a contest for the “best tricked-out trunk” so let your imagine get the best of you and decorate! There will be cider and donuts for the kids and many more surprises in store. This event is being organized by Councilwoman Jessica Merola, Chair of the town youth committee. Friends of The Rensselaer Public Library Election Day Bake Sale
RENSSELAER – The Friends of the Rensselaer Public Library will be holding their annual Election Day Bake Sale on November 2 at the Rensselaer City Hall starting at 6:00 a.m.. There will be a variety of pies, cakes, cookies, etc., and you can also take home a meal of either mac and cheese or chili!!
The Friends fundraisers allow the Library to make purchases that otherwise would not be possible, such as the electronic sign in front of the building, display cabinets, speakers and special events.
The Friends are always looking for new members, so all are welcome to attend the next meeting on November 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Library to find out what we are all about.
HVCC’s Cultural Affairs Program Announces Noontime Concerts
TROY – The Cultural Affairs Program will present A Celebration of World Music, featuring four local groups well known to many in the Capital Region, during the Fall 2021 semester at Hudson Valley Community College. Plans call for each program to be presented in-person in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center on the Troy campus, as well as live streamed from that location. HEARD – Thursday, Nov. 4 at noon – Heard is a handful of extremely-talented musicians, who bring together their skills and passion for world music, jazz and improvisation to create irresistible grooves set in a unique, sonic tapestry. The group’s vibrant sound has grown to incorporate influences from West Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and beyond. Energetic and upbeat, Heard features Composer Elizabeth Woodbury Kasius (keyboards/vocals), Jonathan Greene (woodwinds), Bobby Kendall (bass), Brian Melick (drums) and Zorkie Nelson (percussion/vocals).
Golfstrom – Thursday, Nov. 11 at noon – Golfstrom performs an eclectic mix of 1930’s to 1960’s folk and pop songs that originated in France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Israel, Mexico, Argentina and beyond. Golfstrom features Jonathan Greene on clarinet, Bobby Kendall on string bass, Sergei Nirenburg on accordion and vocals, and Brian Melick on percussion.

Pat Flint To Speak on Stephentown’s Vanderbilt Hotel and Old Downtown
STEPHENTOWN – Pat Flint will give an illustrated talk, The Vanderbilt Hotel and Downtown Stephentown, on Sunday, November 7, at 2:00 p.m. This Stephentown Historical Society program meeting will be held at the Stephentown Town Hall, 26 Grange Hall Road, Stephentown, New York. Just one year after the Lebanon Springs Railroad began service to Bennington, Milo Daniels opened the Vanderbilt Hotel in 1871. It was just across the road from the Stephentown railroad station and served the traveling public. It was a two story structure with a glass-windowed “Captain’s Room” on the roof. The hotel later served as town hall and then fire hall and was a meeting place for many organizations. In 1998 the building was deemed too deteriorated to repair and was razed and replaced by the new fire house. Town Historian Flint will tell some tales of exciting events at the hotel and its bar, and highlight other Main Street businesses during Stephentown’s “railroad era.”

Sand Lake Historical Society November 9th to Feature Robert Shuey
SAND LAKE – On Tuesday November 9th, the Sand Lake Historical Society returns to Sand Lake Town Hall for its monthly program, “Sir, What Do We Do With All The Dead? Mortuary Practices During the American Civil War.” Today’s military considers care for its fallen comrades to be a sacred duty with zero tolerance for mistakes and timely and compassionate notification of next of kin. However, that was not always the case. Prior to the Civil War, service members who died in battle were typically left to decay or buried in place, under primitive conditions, with few provisions for positive identification or notification of family members.
Noted Civil War historian Robert W. Shuey will discuss how and why the Civil War marked a major turning point in military mortuary affairs and spurred the Nation into far better caring for its fallen heroes, establishing national cemeteries, and setting the stage for subsequent national days of remembrance such as Memorial and Veterans Day. Shuey is a retired geologist and charter member of and frequent presenter for the Sand Lake Historical Society. In addition, he is a member of the Capital Civil War Roundtable, 125th New York Regimental Association, Da Buffs (Civil War enthusiasts who share their expertise as well as listening to speakers) and a published author of Socket Bayonets of the Great Powers – A Collector’s Guide.
SLHS monthly programs are open to the public and are held monthly at the Sand Lake Town Hall Courtroom, 8428 NY 66, Averill Park, beginning at 7 pm. COVID protocols are as determined by the Town for the use of their facility (masks are currently required). EAST GREENBUSH – Melvin Roads American Legion Post 1231 celebrates Veteran’s Day, 1:00 PM, Thursday , November 11th, 2021, at the post, 200 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush. NASSAU – As we get set to open the Nassau Community Connections Community Center, Volunteers are needed to staff it! We are looking for Volunteers to help fulfill the purpose of the Center: a place for people to build a sense of community, provide fellowship, engage in activities, and be referred to the resources they need. Volunteers will staff the Community Center starting from the hours of 9am-12pm during weekdays, with the intention of expanding these hours as time goes on. Volunteers will assist community members and help oversee operation of the space, always with another Volunteer at their side.

NYS Snowmobile Safety Class
GRAFTON – On Saturday, November 13th, the Grafton Trailblazers Snowmobile Club will host a NYS Youth Snowmobile Safety Class for youth ages 10-17. Students must be at least 10 years old the day of the class. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate. The course will be held at the Grafton VFW/Fire Hall on South Road from 8:15 to approximately 4:30pm. The course will be taught by NYS certified volunteer instructors Jim Blessing and Dominic Jacangelo. Highlight Acting Troupe to Hold Auditions for C-Rhyme and Pun-ishment

Hudson-Mohawk Weavers’ Guild Holds 43rd Annual Show & Sale
NORTH GREENBUSH – The Hudson-Mohawk Weavers’ Guild invites the public to its 43rd Annual Show & Sale, held Friday, November 12 through Sunday, November 14. Big changes are in store for this year’s event, as the Show & Sale moves to Pat’s Barn in the Rensselaer Tech Park in North Greenbush.
After going virtual for the 2020 Show & Sale, the Guild is thrilled to be back in person at a new, larger venue. After outgrowing its previous home, the event moves to an equally historic, new location of Pat’s Barn, which offers better accessibility (including an elevator), more space, and ample free parking. More than 40 handweavers will exhibit and sell their work at the Show & Sale, making it the largest display of handweaving in the Northeast. Guild members work all year to prepare over 2500 items for sale.
Pat’s Barn, a 200 year old landmark, serves as the new home of the event, with two full floors of exhibits. The Show & Sale will include housewares such as rugs and table linens, garments including scarves, shawls and jackets, as well as holiday gifts such as cards and ornaments. The event features a wide range of gift options suitable for everyone’s holiday shopping list.
Over 500 people are expected to attend this year’s event. The show draws attendees from a wide radius, with visitors coming from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and even Ohio. Admission and off-street parking are free. The Show & Sale is staffed exclusively by Guild members, giving the public a chance to meet the makers and learn more about this craft. Daily fashion shows give visitors the opportunity to see how these unique handwoven items can be styled and feature both men’s and women’s fashions. Guild members will also continuously demonstrate both handweaving and spinning using a range of equipment types.

Friends’ Annual Harvest 2021
NASSAU – The Friends of the Nassau Free Library invite you to our annual Harvest Fest, Saturday November 13, 2021. This year the event will be held at the Chandler Young VFW Hall Rt. 20, Nassau, NY. Once again we are offering per-ordered, frozen pies which can be picked up at the Harvest Fest. This year 8-10 vendors will offer goods for sale. Artisans and Crafter’s offerings will include; candles, knitting goods, ornaments, wreaths, paintings, baby items, table runners, crocheted items, jewelry and quilted items just to name a few. Music will be provided by a variety of our talented neighbors. Cider and donuts will be available for a small price.
Doors open at 9:00 AM and close at 3:00 PM and lots of parking is available along with handicap accessibility.
To pre–order pies: pick up an order blank at the Nassau Free Library, or online at www.nassaufreelibrary.org or from a member of the Friends. Pies must be prepaid at time of order and deadline for orders is November 7th. If pies cannot be picked up on November 13, prior arrangements must be made. This year we have: 10” pies: Apple, Apple crisp, Strawberry Rhubarb, Blueberry, Cherry, Very Berry and 6” Strawberry Rhubarb pies.
We will also be holding the drawing for the winner of our Winter in Upstate quilt at this event (last chance to buy a raffle ticket!).

LVORC Event to Support Adult Literacy Programs in Albany County and Rensselaer County
TROY – The Fall Festival of Literacy will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Troy, from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. There will be a virtual option for those who do not want to attend in person. We will be joined this year by Carol R. Daggs, author of Saratoga Soul Brandtville Blues.
Join us at 11:30 for a cash bar and delicious boxed lunch prepared by the chefs of the Hilton Garden Inn. Those wishing to attend virtually can pick up their boxed lunch at the Hilton prior to the event. The program will begin at 12:00 noon. Those attending online will receive the link in advance.

Holiday Balsam Fir Wreath Sale to Benefit Friends of the Dyken Pond Center
Grafton –The Friends of the Dyken Pond Center are selling holiday balsam fir wreaths. Proceeds from sales are used to support the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center activities, such as scholarships for school classes to attend field trips and trail improvements. Each lush 18-inch wreath will be crafted with aromatic balsam fir, pine cones, berries, a large red bow and a collectible handmade nature ornament to be cherished for years to come. This is a pre-order sale and all wreaths must be ordered by November 14th. Cost is $30. Larger wreath sizes available upon request. Wreaths can be picked up at Roxborough Holdings (former Grafton Elementary) 13 Babcock Lake Rd., Petersburg, NY on Nov. 20 from 11-1pm or in Troy on Nov. 22 from 12-2pm.
