Survival & Wilderness Skills Workshop

EAST NASSAU – Saturday, February 20, 10am-1pm at Rensselaer Plateau Alliance’s Albert Family Community Forest, 120 Hayes Road, East Nassau. Join Fred McCagg for an introduction to the fundamentals of wilderness survival, appropriate for all skill levels. For beginners, it’s an opportunity to learn about the backcountry and how to deal with wilderness emergencies. For those more experienced in the outdoors, this is a great chance to refresh important skills with an experienced instructor. Each participant receives a free fire starting kit! Dress appropriately for the cold, keeping in mind there may be be periods of inactivity. Depending on snow and ice conditions, proper footwear and snowshoes or microspikes may be needed. Bring extra layers for warmth, hot drinks, and hand and feet warmers. Masks are required. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited, so please register early at www.rensselaerplateau.org.

New Art Show at Sand Lake Center for the Arts

SAND LAKE – Sand Lake Center for the Arts will be presenting Found Object Assemblages by Alan Opresko and paintings by Leslie Berlinsky – through February 27. Free and open to the public every Saturday from 12 to 3.

The New York State Archives is engaged in another collaboration with Ancestry on the digitization of NYS records, which were released in 2020. CDGS is very pleased to welcome Jamie Brinkman, an experienced archivist, to present on the recently digitized records which include:

• Prison and executive clemency records

• Civil service employment cards

• Grand Army of the Republic post rosters

Ms. Brinkman will also discuss the unique arrangement that the Archives made with Ancestry that allows NYS residents free access to these and other records without the need of an Ancestry subscription.

This will be a Zoom meeting. There is a 100 person limit. Registration is free and will open to the public approximately Feb 16, 2021. See our website under meetings and events.

The Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake Fundraising Drive 

SAND LAKE – The Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake is supporting a charity fundraising drive within the Averill Park Central School District to benefit the Capital Region’s Ronald Mc Donald House. The fundraising drive has been extended until February 28th since schools have not been in session for over four months. The goal remains to collect enough pull tabs from soda, beer, soups and pet food cans to fill a school bus! 

We ask that parents of our school children and other interested citizens join this effort by removing and collecting as many pull tabs as possible during the months ahead and while schools remain closed take them to the Town Clerk’s office at Sand Lake Town Hall. When schools reopen all collected pull tabs may again be dropped off at the office of one of our three elementary schools, the Algonquin Middle School’s office or to the office at the Averill Park High School.

Please join us to help the Ronald McDonald House as it continues to offer a haven of comfort, love, hope and support – free of charge – for critically ill children and their families. Thank you.  

Fifth Annual Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The fifth annual Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair will be held Saturday, March 6 from 10-4 pm. One can participate in: workshops, networking, an exhibition hall and in affinity groups which will provide an opportunity to “mingle” and “meet” new people. The Fair is sponsored by the non-profit Community Advocates for a Sustainable Environment (CASE) organization.

This is a FREE public event, but one must register on line for tickets at: www.caseonline.org .

CASE members are pleased to continue to offer people in the Greater Capital District area a one-stop shopping/information space for renewable energy and sustainable living products, services and ideas.

There will be no social distancing, no face masks, no crowd noise, no exhibitor siting issues, no weather or parking concerns, just an enjoyable, relaxing, healthy atmosphere!

The exhibitors fee for a “booth” is $200 and the not-for-profit organizations fee is $35. They can register and pay at: www.caseonline.org .

This fee includes exhibit space at the Fair, listing on the CASE website indefinitely and a list of visitors to the Fair who have agreed to share their contact information.

Virtual Adult Tractor Safety Workshop

RENSSELAER COUNTY – Open to All adults – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is excited to offer a Tractor and Farm Safety Course on Tuesday, March 16th at 7 PM

This program is geared for adult audiences. Statistics show that farming and operating equipment is a hazardous and dangerous endeavor. Help yourself reduce the risks of an accident and attend this informative morning session. The program will consist of a very detailed presentation from the New York Center of for Agriculture Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) followed by a Q&A. This program is perfect for farmers old and new as well as any adult who currently works with machinery on the job, in their backyard, or plans to in the future. Due to COVID-19 and wanting to keep our participants safe, this program will be done via Zoom.
