POESTENKILL – Any greater Poestenkill area residents currently experiencing temporary or long term food insecurity can turn to The Bread of Life Food Pantry at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Poestenkill for supplemental food assistance. We provide basic nutritional foods and related items the first and third Thursday of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 PM in a very discreet, nonjudgmental manner. The Anchor Food Pantry
SCHODACK – The Anchor Food Pantry in an attempt to keep the residents of the Town of Schodack informed during these pandemic times has an update for our hours of operation and business procedures. The anchor is open the following days for servicing clientele. Monday evenings 5pm-7pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9am-2pm , and the first Saturday of each month from 10am-1pm. New clients are asked to furnish proof of residncy on their initial visit. Also if possible call ahead at 518-732-4120 and staff will accommodate and have food call ready which until further notice will be delivered to your vehicle. We have good news on donation front -we will be accepting clothing and houseware donations effective immediately during regular business hours . Clothing request is for summer and fall apparel at this time. AVERILL PARK – Congratulations to the girls varsity lacrosse team for winning the Section 2, Class C championship! This is the first time in school history that the team has won a sectional title. Way to go everyone!
Joseph Richter won the Aesthetics Award in this year’s Capital District E-Week Balsa Wood Bride Competition, beating out more than 100 entrants in his category. A check for $150 came with the first-place finish. Great job Joseph!
The Averill Park High School Journalism Club placed first in a Journalistic Review contest held by the American Scholastic Press Association for its work on the student newspaper, The Chronicle. Congratulations to everyone involved in putting together the award-winning periodical!

Community Caregivers Expanding Program in Rensselaer County!
RENSSELAER COUNTY – Do you know someone who needs our help?! Do you have a few hours a month to give to someone in our community?! Community Caregivers is expanding our program in Rensselaer County!
Community Caregivers is a non for profit agency that has provided services for over 20 years in Albany County. Our goal is to help individuals of any age maintain their independence and dignity within their homes with our support. Last year, Community Caregivers began “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” in Rensselaer County in response to COVID isolation by many in our community.
We pair carefully vetted and trained volunteers with folks for friendly weekly phone calls. Volunteers check in to make sure that individuals have groceries, medications, and supplies. They provide a listening ear to those who may need one. As COVID has lessened and our staff and clients have become vaccinated, Community Caregivers in Rensselaer County is expanding the program and starting in home visits, transportation to appointments, help with light housekeeping and paperwork, and grocery shopping. All of our services are free to clients.
Currently we are in need of volunteers and clients to service in our county. Volunteer Orientations take place several times a month and our applications are online. Letting Our Community Know What Doors of Hope is Doing
WEST SAND LAKE -Doors of Hope, like everyone else, is recovering from the Pandemic but we are now fully open. During the pandemic we continued to distribute food to those in need and now we distribute every day till noon. We purchase our food from the Regional Food Bank and Hannaford and receive donations from local organizations and businesses.
In December we contributed money to the Sand Lake Kiwanis to be used towards their annual Christmas program because the pandemic prohibited them from raising funds through community events.
We also contribute to other not-for-profits in the area by donating baby clothes and furniture to “Things of Our Very Own” and also donate children’s clothing to Unity House in Troy. Clothing we can’t keep due to lack of space is given to the Victory Church in Albany for their mission and a volunteer takes household objects to Grassroots. We donate our overflow to the community by placing a “free cart” in front of our new home in 43 Mall. And this year we were able to reach out even further. Through a local couple, we were able to donate clothing, sporting goods, toys and books all the way to the Dominican Republic. When there is a fire or another need in the community, Doors of Hope is always ready to provide household goods, clothes, food and other needed items.
We are very excited that this summer we were able to provide scholarships to pay for 7 local, deserving students to summer camp for 5 weeks each.
Doors of Hope is staffed by a great group of volunteers who work hard and donate their time. If you are interested in volunteering, ask to be placed on our waiting list. Thanks to you, our community, for making this all happen through your kindness and generosity. And as a Christian organization, we thank God for giving us the opportunities and resources to serve.
Poestenkill and Sand Lake Summer Camp
POESTENKILL/SAND LAKE – Poestenkill and Sand Lake Summer Camp will run together at Poestenkill Elementary School from July 12th to August 13th. Camp is for kids entering kindergarten to ninth grade. Registration is online and specific information about camp is posted on Poestenkill and Sand Lake website. Positions are available for CITs, Counselors and Med Team. Applications can be found on each town’s website. Counselors need to be 16 years old and CITs need to be 15 years old.

Dear Friends of Nassau-Schodack Cemetery
NASSAU/SCHODACK – It’s been about 20 years since our last donation campaign. Nassau-Schodack Cemetery, like many other cemeteries, is a non-profit organization supported by its lot owners. Board Members serve without compensation and do not rely on government or religious organizations for support. Our operating funds come solely from services rendered, lot sales, interest on invested funds and donations.
Nassau-Schodack Cemetery is facing financial hardship. As expenses increase, our revenues are decreasing. Lot sales have declined as well as the interest generated by investments and endowments. The Board continues to keep expenses at a minimum and still maintain the well-groomed appearance of the cemetery. This is becoming increasingly difficult. The Board continues to invest in higher interest earning accounts while meeting New York State requirements and seeks the most responsible contractor for services.
As the trees age and fall, it is costly to have them removed. The dirt roads continue to deteriorate which requires material and equipment. Our vault was in disrepair and unfortunately needed to be razed. The care taker has not received compensation in many years but continues to provide the utmost attention and care to the cemetery.
We are very appreciative of the volunteers that help clean up our cemetery and maintain their lots. Thank you to Scout Troop 166 for painting the fence as an Eagle Project a few years ago.
We need your financial assistance in order to maintain operation of the cemetery for future generations and the loved ones interred there. Please help with a monetary gift. Every donation will be greatly appreciated.

Poestenkill “Bread of Life” Food Pantry
POESTENKILL – NEW HOURS – Since September 2015, the Poestenkill “Bread of Life” food pantry has been offering staple food items to individuals and families in Poestenkill and surrounding communities who need food for themselves and their families. Beginning on May 1st, 2021 our NEW HOURS will BEGIN at 4:30 pm END AT 6:30pm on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays of every month.
We thank our friends, community and many organizations who continue to support this effort through their most generous donations of time, resources and staple foods. Our new volunteers are the best, most kind, compassionate individuals. We are so grateful they have joined our pantry.

Search and Rescue Volunteers Needed
CAPITAL DISTRICT – the Tri-State Emergency Team is recruiting volunteers to provide wildland and underwater searches within a 100 mile radius of Waterrford, NY. This includes all aspects of field and underwater search. The Tri-State Emergency Team responds when requested by NYS Forest Rangers and other police agencies throughout New York State, Western Vermont and Massachusetts. We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need. The team will provide training and complete support as needed. Our headquarters is located in Waterford. Applicants need not live in Waterford to volunteer.
