Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Fundraising for Student of the Year
EAST GREENBUSH – I am participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Students of the Year program as a team member for Columbia Kicks Cancer. Students of the Year is a seven-week competition for high school leaders seeking to make an impact in the fight against cancer. This year, my good friend Taylor O’Brien and I, along with many people from around our community, have decided to start a campaign that will help those fighting cancer.

Local Students Named to Hamilton College Fall 2020 Dean’s List
CLINTON, NY – The following local residents were named to the Dean’s List at Hamilton College for the 2020 fall semester:
Katerina Dunleavy of Troy (12180). Dunleavy, a first-year student, is a graduate of Troy City Schools.

To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must have carried throughout the semester a course load of four or more graded credits with an average of 3.5 or above.

Students named to the Dean’s List at the University of New Hampshire are students who have earned recognition through their superior scholastic performance during a semester enrolled in a full-time course load (12 or more graded credits). Highest honors are awarded to students who earn a semester grade point average of 3.85 or better out of a possible 4.0. Students with a 3.65 to 3.84 average are awarded high honors and students whose grade point average is 3.5 through 3.64 are awarded honors.
Spencer Daley of Troy Named to the SUNY Polytechnic Institute President’s List for Academic Excellence

Super Bowl Weekend: A Vulnerable Time For Some
CAPITAL DISTRICT – The biggest game of the year is right around the corner, the Super Bowl. We’ve been watching and hearing about it on the news, on sports stations, reading about it in the newspapers and even talking about it at work or in school. It’s impossible to escape the buzz around the “big game.”
The Super Bowl is also one of the biggest betting events of the year. From workplace environments betting on squares, to a host of online bets and fantasy leagues, people can literally bet on every aspect of the game. It is estimated that over 22 million Americans will wager more than $6 billion on the game. For some people, these wagers may be more costly than they can afford.
Of those 22 million Americans betting on the Super Bowl, approximately 4%, or 880,000 individuals experience a gambling problem. What does that mean? It means that they are unable to set and stick to a limit of time and money spent on gambling. It means that they may be betting to escape feelings of anxiety, stress or depression. Gambling behaviors may be causing problems at home, impacting their relationships with their spouse and/or children. They may also be experiencing problems at work as well. For some, their gambling may turn into an addiction.
For people in recovery, the Super Bowl may be a huge trigger to start gambling again. It may be difficult to avoid talking about the Super Bowl. Hearing people talking about betting on the game may cause them to feel the urge to resort to old habits and place a bet of their own, which could trigger a relapse.
While this may be an exciting time to watch and enjoy the Super Bowl, for some it can have a negative effect both financially and emotionally. For those already struggling due to problem gambling, it may be one of the hardest times of the year.

News from Averill Park CSD
AVERILL PARK – On January 28, Averill Park High School and Algonquin Middle School held the first Warrior Wellness Day. This fully virtual event focused on giving students and parents ways to manage their social, emotional and physical well-being. We hope that everyone found this day to be very beneficial. Thank you to everyone who was involved in making this a special day.
The Algonquin Builder’s Club collected more than 200 articles of clothing, including winter hats, gloves and masks. Items were donated to Joseph’s House in Troy. Great job everyone!
During the Board of Education meeting on January 25, the District appointed Christina Mein to become the Interim Principal at West Sand Lake Elementary School. Mrs. Mein is currently an Assistant Principal at the High School and will be taking over for Laura Kyer, who is retiring in March. We thank Mrs. Kyer for the outstanding work that she has done for students in the District!

Center Brunswick United Methodist Church Announces Financial Scholarship for 2021 Tamarac High School Graduates
TROY – The Finance Committee of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church has announced that it will award $500 to a student to be selected from the Tamarac High School Class of 2021. The money may be used for any type of expenses related to further education. Students do not have to belong to this Church, any other church or religion to be eligible for this award.
Interested students must apply for this award no later than March 1, 2021. The application can be obtained from the school’s guidance department or from our website at (www.CenterBrunswickUMC.company).
This award is given in memory of Harold and Mabel Keyes through a trust funded by their last will and testament. Mabel taught in the Brunswick schools and continued teaching Sunday School at Center Brunswick UMC for many years after she retired. Through this award, her love of helping young people learn and grow will continue to reach the youth of our community.
The Center Brunswick United Methodist Church is located at the intersection of Routes 7 and 142 in Troy.
Attention Marines and Naval Corpsman Past and Present
CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Capt. Wm. Dale O’Brien Marine Corps League Detachment #241 in Albany NY. – Are looking for Marines and Corpsman who want to continue to share the honors and camaraderie that you had while in the corps? Our Detachment is dedicated to helping other marines, their family and fellow veterans. We do it through several programs like the Rose Program, Honor a Vet, visiting home or hospital bond marine or naval corpsman, with our color guard in parades and other ceremonies. We continue to participate in the Toys for Tots program and more. There is also many social activities available such as our Annual Marine Corps Ball, bus trips to Washington DC to clean our monuments and participation in other Veteran events. We ae brothers and sisters supporting each other still!

RENSSELAER COUNTY – 1-833-467-3123 – Do you need help with substance use issues? Are you interested in volunteering for the helpline? The Rensselaer County Recovery Helpline offers information, local resources, and referrals for individuals and their families regarding substance use issues. The toll-free line is available 7 days a week from 9am-9pm. Each volunteer chooses shifts of 4 hours at a time to be on-call. When someone calls the number, a volunteer answers on their own smartphone, and can enter information to a database on their own computer, allowing for easy and quick access to resources. The information is sent to one of the 9 leaders, who will then assist the caller. Search and Rescue Volunteers Needed
CAPITAL DISTRICT – the Tri-State Emergency Team is recruiting volunteers to provide wildland and underwater searches within a 100 mile radius of Waterrford, NY. This includes all aspects of field and underwater search. The Tri-State Emergency Team responds when requested by NYS Forest Rangers and other police agencies throughout New York State, Western Vermont and Massachusetts. We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need. The team will provide training and complete support as needed. Our headquarters is located in Waterford. Applicants need not live in Waterford to volunteer.
