Mindful Nature Walk at Dyken Pond EEC
Grafton –Mindful Nature Walk: Saturday, January 16: 1 – 3pm Join Sandy Wilson from Spirit of Dragonflies, LLC to celebrate the wonders of the outdoors! For those of you who have never experienced a Mindful Nature Walk we will be experiencing the benefits of “Forest Bathing.” Don’t worry, Forest Bathing requires no shower cap and involves no actual bathing in water. Called Shinrin-Yoku where it originated in Japan, it is the wellness practice of being in the present moment and opening up our senses to fully take in the forest atmosphere. This type of slow walking ‘sauntering’, deep breathing, present-centered awareness, and observation in nature is shown to reduce stress, boost our moods, and strengthen our immune systems. January Family and Youth Programs at Dyken Pond EEC
Grafton –Snow and chilly temperatures doesn’t mean your outdoor fun has to come to an end. There’s a wonderful winter world waiting for those who want to enjoy nature during the cold season. Being outside can be a safe way to socialize, exercise and hold off the winter blues. If you’ve never tried snowshoes or a winter walk, one of our family programs may be a great chance to do so. The saying goes that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. So, put on some layers, a warm hat, gloves and socks and explore winter! The Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center has the following events to offer in January.
The Friday Family Fitness Foray: Every Friday, January – March: 10am -11:30am – Every Friday this winter from 10am -12pm we will be exploring a different area of the park attempting to cover every inch of the park’s many trails while searching the woods for seasonal wonders. These programs end at lunch time so pack a picnic lunch to enjoy following the program! Preregistration required for each weekly session. Reserve snowshoes if needed for $5. All ages welcome but must be able to hike 2 miles.
Find and Follow a Fox day: Wednesday, January 20: 1pm – 2:30pm
We will spend two hours attempting to find the tracks of a fox and following them to gain insight into their seasonal behavior. This is your chance to spend two hours living in the shoes (or feet) of a fox. Hike will include bushwhacking (off trail hiking). For youth ages 7 and up. Snowshoe rentals can be reserved for $5. During the pandemic, we are waiving most program fees, but donations of any amount are always welcome if you are able. Most of our programs are weather and snow dependent.
