Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop

RENSSELAER – The volunteers at the Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop work hard to provide a clean and organized shopping experience. The shop offers clothing for all ages and sizes including prom dresses and accessories, jewelry, games, puzzles, baby equipment, toys, CDs,DVDs, records, linens, household goods and much more. Ask to see our handicapped equipment.

Multi-media Presentation with Karim Nagi at HVCC 

TROY – All are welcome to attend a multi-media presentation – Karim Nagi: Arab Arts vs. Stereotyping & Islamophobia – on Friday, Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Bulmer Telecommunications Auditorium on the Troy campus. The free event opens the college’s Cultural Affairs Program spring 2020 schedule of events.

Egyptian performing and teaching artist Karim Nagi’s multi-media presentation features Arab instruments (the tablah, riqq and buzuq) and rousing performances of “Baladi TukTuk” and “Oriental Magic Carpet” from “Detour Guide,” one of his many CDs. A self-described “culture bearer,” Nagi’s mission is to demonstrate how familiarity between cultural groups reduces racism, using his own career, research data, music and videos to dispel stereotypes. He has performed and taught at more than 300 schools and at major Arab culture festivals throughout the United States, Asia and Europe.

The Fresh Air Fund to Bring Summer to The Troy Waterfront Farmers’ Market This Winter

    TROY –   The Fresh Air Fund’s Albany, Ny Volunteers Will Attend The Troy Waterfront Farmers’ Market Held In The Troy Atrium. 49 4th Street, Troy, NY 12181.

The Troy Waterfront Farmer’s Market has returned for its 20th season in downtown Troy, NY, where the community is able to shop and browse over 100 local, producer-only vendors every Saturday from November to April, from 9 am – 2 pm. The market takes pride in creating and maintaining a sense of community, as it provides opportunities for community outreach and education. On Saturday, February 15, 2020, Saturday, March 7, 2020, and Saturday, March 21, 2020, the Albany, NY Friendly Towns volunteers will have a community table, where they will be available to answer questions about volunteering as a Fresh Air Fund Host Family and share their experiences.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County Harvest Connection Training

RENSSELAER COUNTY – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is hosting three trainings to help farmers set up their farm page on the Harvest Connection Website. Harvest Connection is a farm to table initiative where the goal is to help consumers find farm fresh products by giving them a website and app platform to find local farms and farmers markets. We are currently working with farms and farmers markets in Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady and Washington counties. This free training is for current producers in our database and those who would like to join. The training will give you the information needed and a demonstration on how to manage your personal farm page as well as see how we plan to move forward with Harvest Connection. We will have a training on February 19th at 10 A.M and March 4th at 6:30 P.M. The training on March 12th will go from 9:00-9:30 A.M, and then will be directly followed by a Social Media Marketing Workshop. A Family Magic Lantern Program at Crailo State Historic Site

RENSSELAER – On Thursday, February 20, 2020 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Crailo State Historic Site will host a Family Magic Lantern Program, an interactive program for people of all ages to learn and experience the history of the magic lantern, “the grandfather of cinema.”

During the 1600s, the Dutch scientist and inventor Christiaan Huyghens created the first magic lantern, and it was used by magicians and showmen for generations. On February 20, visitors to Crailo will get to experience a historically recreated magic lantern performance presented by Elliott & Schlemowitz Magic Lanternists. Doors open at noon, and the first Magic Lantern demonstration using antique projection equipment will begin at 12:30 PM. A second magic lantern performance will take place at 2:30 PM. Additionally, intermittent short presentations of magic lantern history and demonstrations take place throughout the afternoon. Other hands on activities include making your own magic lantern slides, playing with the toy magic lantern, and using a variety of noise makers to accompany the slides.

During the program, guests will enjoy a museum open house and refreshments by the fire in Crailo’s hearth kitchen. The Marketplace Museum Shop will be open, with a selection of unique items. Admission is $3.00 per person, 12 & Under are free of charge.

Hike for Hemlocks at Thacher Visitor Center 

VOORHEESVILLE – Saturday, February 22, 10:30a.m. – 1:00p.m.  New York’s eastern hemlocks provide food and shelter for wildlife, help cool streams, and provide erosion control. Sadly, our beloved hemlocks are under attack by the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). HWA is an invasive, aphid-like insect that attacks our hemlocks and can kill trees within 4 to 10 years. We need your help tracking eastern hemlocks and HWA across NYS. Learn how to identify eastern hemlocks and how to look for signs of HWA infestation, and learn how to report HWA into iMapInvasives, NY’s invasive species database. Imagine that you are part of a team to help Jews that have been imprisoned in Portugal during the time of the Inquisition . Relatives approach you and ask for your help. Each part of your team has special functions to help get this person out of prison and out of Portugal. Each team has only 5 members. February Mindful Nature Walk

Join Kripalu-certified Mindful Outdoor Guides Molly Freiberg and Moriah Cutro-Kelly for our February Mindful Walk. We will be walking slowly, sometimes sitting, to take in the forest atmosphere, so we will not be building much heat. Bundle up in your warm winter layers and then add 1 or 2 more! Averill Park Community Education New Free Program

AVERILL PARK –  “Why Diets Fail and What You Can Do About It” is a new free program offering on Monday nights beginning February 24, 2020. The instructor is Robin Pugliese, a Certified Nutrition Coach. Classes begin at 5:30 p.m. at Miller Hill Elementary School in Room 120. Weight loss doesn’t start in the gym or in the kitchen. Successful weight loss starts in the mind. We will look at all the ways your brain has kept you from losing weight and/or keeping it off. Change your mind, change your body. Each class will last between 30 to 60 minutes depending on the topic. Registration is required. The Ferris Wheel comes to Poestenkill

POESTENKILL – Mr. Ferris was born in 1859. He left Nevada and came to Troy where he graduated from RPI in 1881. Ferris began his career in railroad and bridge engineering. News of the 1893 Columbian Exposition drew him to Chicago since the exposition had issued a challenge to Americian engineers to conceive a monument that would surpass the Eiffel Tower. He proposed a wheel from which visitors would be able to view the entire expo. He met with much opposition in the beginning. So here is your opportunity to find out the how and why of Mr. Ferris and his wheel. Please join us on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:00 PM at the Poestenkill Town Hall. Bible Study continues Wednesday evening at 6:00. This week we will learn that the Israelites were not lost in the desert, but that God had them on a specific path for the purpose of molding them into his people. Come at 5:30 to share pizza and salad.

Hot Mess Crafters meets on Wednesday morning at 10:00. We thank those who have generously donated yarn, patterns, and tools to us. We now have patterns for wine bottle covers that are an easy, fun project and a nice way to present a hostess gift. We hope you will join us.

SCHODACK –  For anyone who has not paid their 2020 Real Property Taxes, the Tax Office will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays during the month of February during the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm. All payments received after February 29th will incur an additional penalty. 12th Annual Russian Winter Festival 

ALBANY – Saturday, February 29, 2020. 11am-5pm. Polish Community Center 225 Washington Ave. Ext Albany. It’s a day of Russian traditional food, music, costumes, exhibits, performances, crafts and contests.

The festival’s headliner is a folk ensemble “Barynya” from New York, NY. It’s a well-known group that enjoys exalting stature as the premier Russian folk ensemble outside of Russia. Barynya presents Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Jewish and Gypsy Roma traditional dancing, music, songs, and virtuoso performances on instruments including the balalaika, garmoshka (Russian folk button accordion), and Gypsy guitars. 

Children Dance ensemble “Kaleidoscope”, Brooklyn, NY, provides a selection of thrilling and colorful Russian folk dancing, enchanting Russian folk music. Group performs Russian, Ukrainian, Gypsy, Armenian and Georgian folk traditional dances.

The contest “Best Braided Hairdo Contest” at the Grand Finale at 3pm is open to girls and women of all ages for modeling and to any non-professional hair stylists including students of hairdressing schools for designs. Russian braid – girl’s pride and glory!  A “Russian braid” is something like a myth in Russia: the word means a girl who owns an especially long and thick braid, which always belongs to a true Russian beauty. Averill Park Announces Kindergarten Registrations for the 2020-2021 School Year

AVERILL PARK – The Averill Park School District has begun the process of registering boys and girls for the 2020-2021 Kindergarten Classes. If you, or someone you know, has a child who will be five years of age on or before December 1, 2020 please contact the district registrar at 674-7050 extension 7201 to make sure that the child is listed on our school census. This will guarantee that you will receive all upcoming kindergarten information by mail. Registration paperwork should be hand delivered by the parent or guardian to the district registrar at the district office at the Averill Park High School during the month of February. Registration hours are Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 3:30 PM. Registration forms are accepted by appointment. All paperwork must be completed by 02-28-2020.

Keyes Scholarship for Tamarac Seniors

CENTER BRUNSWICK – The Finance Committee of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church has announced that it will award $500 to a student to be selected from the Tamarac High School Class of 2020. The money may be used for any type of expenses related to further education. Students do not have to belong to this Church, any other church or religion to be eligible for this award.

This award is given in memory of Harold and Mabel Keyes through a trust funded by their last will and testament. Mabel taught in the Brunswick schools and continued teaching Sunday School at Center Brunswick UMC for many years after she retired. Extension Holds “Spring Garden Day” March 7

Hudson Valley Writers Guild Showcases Prose Writers

ALBANY – (hvwg.org) – The Hudson Valley Writers Guild will present a reading to showcase local prose writers.  Reading and presenting at this second event in the series will be Moriah Hampton (stories), Keith Willis (romance/fantasy), and Richard Matturro (stories.)

Each of the writers will take 20 to 30 minutes to read from and discuss their work.  Members of the Guild and the general public are invited and encouraged to attend to hear these varied works.  Light refreshments will be provided.

This event will take place on Sunday, March 29, 2020 between 1:30 and 3:00 pm.  It will be at the Washington Avenue main branch of the Albany Public Library in the Community Room on the second floor.

Gilead’s Body & Soul Pantry New Dates for 2020

CENTER BRUNSWICK – I know 2019 was confusing as far as what date we would have pantry and the dinner. As of January 2020 and through April of 2020, we will return to the old schedule of the last Thursday of each month. The hours will be the usual 3:00-6:00 pm.

NASSAU – Are you a resident of the Town or Villages of Nassau? Has your household budget taken a hit? Got a car repair with nothing to spare? Or, are you having to choose between heat or eat? We know it happens, we’re here, we can help.

Norman Young, a well-known Nassau resident and antique dealer, had a birds eye view of the Great Recession of 2008. As his business involved buying household items from individuals needing to sell such items, he was struck by how hard hit many in the town were by the financial crisis. Norman came across an old cookbook that had been used as a fundraiser by a local organization called Open Porch Sunshine Society, which was around the early 1990s. While that organization had long faded away, he loved its neighbor-helping-neighbor philosophy. He conceived of a new Nassau Sunshine organization in which local residents would provide emergency financial assistance to other town residents dealing with a personal financial crisis.Norman and two friends agreed to reach out to others as well as religious and locally based organizations.

At its first meeting the attendees approved of a simple plan – create a non-profit that would offer interest-free loans to residents of the Town and Villages of Nassau facing a financial crisis that exceeded their resources and for which local agencies, public and private, were unable to offer assistance. As our first chairman, Sam Whaley said, “We decided on no-interest loans instead of just giving money away because it provides dignity, not a handout.

Albany-Tula Alliance seeks entries for Annual Essay Contest

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Albany-Tula Alliance is seeking Capital Region students from high school to first-year college to research and write an essay expanding on what young adults, specifically in Russia and the U.S., are doing to help mitigate climate change.

Essays must contain at least 1500 words and include a bibliography. The deadline for registration and essay submission is March 1, 2020. The writer of the winning essay will win $1,000; second prize is $500, and third prize is $250.

For the past quarter-century, the Albany-Tula Alliance has been a cooperative sister city initiative between New York’s Capital Region and the Tula Region in Russia. Through the years there have been many cultural, educational, scientific and business exchanges between the two. Even though government relations remain strained the friends of the Alliance continue to work together as citizen diplomats.

This award is given in memory of Harold and Mabel Keyes through a trust funded by their last will and testament. Mabel taught in the Brunswick schools and continued teaching Sunday School at Center Brunswick UMC for many years after she retired. Through this award, her love of helping young people learn and grow will continue to reach the youth of our community.

HVCC’s Teaching Gallery Presents Landscape Exhibition

TROY – The Teaching Gallery at Hudson Valley Community College announces The Production of Place, a two-person exhibition featuring landscapes by Leah Beeferman and Jen Hitchings that was organized by Thomas Lail, a professor in the college’s Fine Arts Department, on view through March 7.

Lail will moderate a conversation with the artists from 3 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 6 in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium, followed by an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. in The Teaching Gallery, located in the Administration Building on the Troy campus. All events are free and open to the public.

Leah Beeferman is a New York City-based artist, using digital image-making, photography, text, sound and video to explore relationships between observation and abstraction, natural and digital, physical and experiential. A Brooklyn-based artist and curator, Jen Hitchings received a Queens Council on the Arts’ New Works Grant in 2018. She’s had solo exhibitions at MEN Gallery in New York City, and PROTO in Hoboken, NJ.

Exhibitions in The Teaching Gallery are installed and assisted by students enrolled in Gallery Management courses and supported by the Department of Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Digital Media, the Cultural Affairs Program and the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation. Volunteer Fire Company of Center Brunswick Bus Trip 

CENTER BRUNSWICK –  The Volunteer Fire Company of Center Brunswick, Inc. is sponsoring a bus trip to the Tanger Outlets and Foxwoods Casino. The bus will leave the firehouse at 1045 Hoosick Road on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. and will arrive at Foxwoods Resort and Casino. The bus will be departing Foxwoods at 8:00 p.m. returning to the firehouse at approximately 11:30 p.m. The cost of the trip is $40 per seat, which includes $15 Slot Play and a $10 Food Voucher or Free Buffet. There is something to do for everyone – Shop in the Tanger Outlets, play in the casino or take the shuttle to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum (additional cost but worth it). NYSSA Sheriff’s’ Institute Summer Camp Applications Being Accepted

RENSSELAER COUNTY – The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute Summer Camp.

The Summer Camp is for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 who, because of economic reasons, would not have an opportunity to attend a summer camp or enjoy a summer vacation. Campers must be up-to-date on immunizations and have received a medical physical after May 1, 2019. This year’s camp session runs from Sunday, July 26 through Saturday, August 1, 2020.

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The AARP TaxAide program will begin providing FREE tax preparation services for low and moderate income residents in Saratoga, Washington and Warren Counties.  The TaxAide program is sponsored by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the IRS. TaxAide preparers are trained in federal and state tax regulations and are certified by the IRS.

The Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake Fundraising Drive 

SAND LAKE – The Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake is supporting a charity fundraising drive within the Averill Park Central School District to benefit the Capital Region’s Ronald Mc Donald House. The drive will run from now until October 31st with the goal to collect enough pull tabs from soda, beer, soups and pet food cans to fill a school bus! 

We ask that parents of our school children and other interested citizens join this effort by removing and collecting as many pull tabs as possible during the months ahead and taking them to the office of one of our three elementary schools, the Algonquin Middle School’s office or to the office at the Averill Park High School.

Please join us to help the Ronald McDonald House as it continues to offer a haven of comfort, love, hope and support – free of charge – for critically ill children and their families. Thank you.

CAPITAL DISTRICT – Books for Troops sends paperback books of most genre, puzzle books, DVDs and Books on Cd to the deployed all over the world and within the states. We are a registered not-for- profit organization with the NYS Dept of Charities. All names and addresses sent to us are confidential and not shared with others than our volunteers. We have now been in business for ten years and have sent more than 100,000 boxes of books.  We would like to remind anyone who has a family and friend currently deployed with at least 6 more months of deployment left can be sent, free of charge, any of the items listed above, at no cost to them. It is our way of giving back to the troops for all their sacrifices. Wynantskill Seniors

WYNANTSKILL – Come have fun, socialize and join the Wynantskill Seniors. We meet every Monday at 1pm at the Wynantskill Town Hall Annex, Main Avenue. We have a small meeting, serve snacks, socialize and play bingo. Once a month we have a catered lunch instead of snacks, three times a year we go out to a restaurant and we have scheduled day bus trips to various locations about 6 per year. Poestenkill Seniors

POESTENKILL – Weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1pm at the Sullivan-Jones Post in Poestenkill. All seniors are welcome. Coffee and refreshments are served after the meeting, followed by Bingo and cards. The hall is handicapped accessible with sufficient parking. The Poestenkill Seniors have catered lunches, pizza, clam steams, fish fries and luncheons at various restaurants, informational talks on senior safety and bus trips to casinos, theaters and other points of interest.

Stephentown Historical Society is creating Welcome To Stephentown package

STEPHENTOWN – Welcome to Stephentown! We can help you with that!

Moving is always stressful, and a hassle, and, let’s face it – a lot of work! And once you’ve moved to your new location, you have a whole new set of situations and obstacles to overcome. You need to find out where to send the kids to school, or where to find someone to fix your plumbing or wiring. Or maybe you want to check out the local organizations and get involved in area groups. So………. in order to help make all of that just a little easier to navigate, the Stephentown Historical Society is creating a “Welcome to Stephentown” package.

We envision this package having lots of informational “stuff”, like names and contacts to help people find just about anything in town. We’d like to provide information from our local organizations, such as the Fire Department, Library, Historical Society, Veterans, Seniors, local churches and synagogues, and any others that exist. We would like to provide a listing (along with business cards where possible) of all local tradespeople and businesses. We want to include any groups in town – for instance, the Heavenly Quilters and Boy & Girl Scouts. We’d love to have menus from restaurants and maybe “new customer” discounts or other coupon-type discounts.

As you can see, this is a formidable task and we do not want to leave anyone out! So, we are asking for your help. Capital Dist. Chapter of the Embroider’s Guild of America

Grafton Fitness Opportunities

GRAFTON – Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Road, Grafton, has several opportunities to keep our residents 60 and older in shape. Chair Yoga is offered 3 times a week at no charge. This is a low-impact workout for the body and mind. Aerobic Swimming is available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Bennington Rec Center with transportation. Water aerobics offers a resistance and buoyancy that cannot be experienced on ground. The center has a small exercise room with a treadmill and stationary bikes. Regular exercise reduces the risk of injury, decreased symptoms of depression, and improves mobility. Regular exercise can lower blood pressure, strengthen muscles, correct body posture, relieve pain and promotes weight loss. Residents 60 and older are encouraged to get into a good exercise routine. Search and Rescue Volunteers Needed

CAPITAL DISTRICT – the Tri-State Emergency Team is recruiting volunteers to provide wildland and underwater searches within a 100 mile radius of Waterrford, NY.  This includes all aspects of field and underwater search.  The Tri-State Emergency Team responds when requested by NYS Forest Rangers and other police agencies throughout New York State, Western Vermont and Massachesettes.   We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need.   The team will provide training and complete support as needed.  Our headquarters is located in Waterford.  Applicants need not live in Waterford to volunteer.
