Wounded Warriors Honored at STRIDE Snowfest

All of the Warriors and their family members along with the volunteers who were at the event.

Twenty regional Wounded Warriors who have returned from deployment with permanent injuries were honored along with their families by STRIDE Adaptive Sports at the 14th Annual STRIDE Wounded Warrior Snowfest this past weekend February 28- March 3. STRIDE hosted a Welcome Ceremony on Friday, March 1st, in Troy, NY introducing the warriors to be honored to the community to thank them for their selfless service. The majority of the veterans came from New York State along with several traveling from Vermont, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania.

The veterans received a two-night stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, and one night stay at Jiminy Peak luxury suites. The recognition dinner, clothing, entertainment, gifts, food, transportation, and lessons were all free to the Warrior and their family members to serve as a thank you for their service.

This event is a ‘gateway’ to adaptive sports and active lifestyle when entering back into civilian life. An honorary guest speaker and STRIDE Warrior, Major Pierre Larkin said in his speech “Adaptive sports are saving lives and beginning to have an impact on the suicide rate for veterans who have lost their way. I know firsthand, because adaptive sports have saved my life. Instead of looking at a glass half full or half empty, we need to train ourselves to be grateful that we have a glass.”

The Wounded Warrior Snowfest really is an amazing and life changing opportunity for veterans to reinvest themselves in society after going through such traumatic life experiences. STRIDE provides a useful platform for these veterans to develop friendships and life-long memberships in the adaptive sports world. There is also the opportunity for honored veterans to join other year-round programs with STRIDE, including 18 adaptive sport and recreation programs.
