Averill Park Student Leaders Perform Random Acts of Kindness

The student government at Averill Park High School is constantly creating projects and events that benefit the high school students and staff. This past school year, student leaders have created the Madi Stern Kindness Project in an attempt to do just that. This project involves performing small acts of kindness meant to bring joy into the everyday lives of the community in memory of former Averill Park student, Madi Stern. Delaney Burton, a student leader, explains, “Madi was a very kind soul and put everyone else before her. We wanted to find the perfect way to use her memory to affect the school community.”

On the day before the holiday vacation at Averill Park High School, the student government could be found in the main foyer of the high school passing out free hot chocolate. “It was so great to see people’s faces light up when they realized what was going on,” said Alyssa Lindheimer, a member of student government, “It was exactly what we aimed to accomplish.” The line for hot chocolate reached far throughout the school on that day, filled with excited students. Carley Salerno, a student at Averill Park, explained, “It’s not something that anyone expected and it definitely brought joy throughout the high school.”

The idea for the kindness project began at the Suburban Council Leadership Conference at Columbia High School. Student leaders listened to a group of motivational speakers but ultimately got the idea from papers that were hung around the school. They had tear-off slips at the bottom with positive messages for students to take. “I proposed the idea to do something like this in our school and Mrs. Daviero and Mrs. Ferlito agreed,” said Burton, “After talking it over we came to the conclusion it should be in memory of Madi because of how kind she was and the impact she made on the community by constantly paying it forward.”

Community Generosity Forces Expansion

The clothing and shoe drop off bin in the parking lot of Hope Lutheran Church has been replaced with a new unit, double in size of previous unit. The new one has double chutes for you to slide your donations into the box.

Greg Whitney, president of the congregation stated, “The community has responded in such a generous way we wanted to be able to show our appreciation by improving the collection experience.”

The new bin is located in the parking lot of Hope Lutheran Church, 470 Winter Street Extension, in North Greenbush. Donations of clothing and shoes should be in a tied up plastic bag. Sorry we cannot accept toys, or baby seats, chairs, car seats etc.

The Hope Lutheran Church would like to thank St. Pauly Textile Inc. for donating this new unit. They do good work to get useable clothing to people who can use it, here in the U.S. and in developing countries, while having a meaningful impact in our local communities.

Whitney concluded “The Lutheran Church has a long history of supporting ministries that serve both families here and around the world.”

Rensselaer County Youth Annual Coat Drive

The Rensselaer County Department for Youth is hosting their 19th Annual Par, Tee, Fore COATS Golf Event .

On Tuesday, September 10th 2019 at the Troy Country Club.

All proceeds will go to support the Rensselaer County Department for Youth Coat drive. To date, over 7,000 brand new coats have been given to low-income children living in Rensselaer County.

A foursome team is $600 or individual is $175 per person. And if you have a business we have larger sponsorship packages available. With your help we can reach our goal of 800 coats for 2019.

Repair Café

What do you do with a broken lamp? Or a sweater with a hole? Toss it? No way! The Village of Castleton-on-Hudson will hold the next Repair Café on Friday, September 13, 2019 from 4:30 to 7:30 PM at the Castleton-on-Hudson Farmers and Artisans Market (COHFAM), on the corner of Scott Avenue (150) and Main Street (9J). If COHFAM is canceled due to rain, Repair Café will be held 9/13, same hours at the Village Hall instead. People visiting the Repair Café bring along their broken but beloved items. Volunteers try their best to make repairs, and it’s free of charge! Sipping And Sampling

Benefit Friends of Rensselaer Library

The Friends of the Rensselaer Library are having their first annual fundraiser for the library. Sipping and Sampling will be held on Sept. 14th from 5-9pm at City View Terrace over Partition St. Liquor 800 Partition St. Rensselaer, overlooking the Albany skyline. We will have wine tasting through the generosity of Tim Bayly, beers and ciders from Roger Savoy of the Emporium on Rt. 4. All sipping will be done with a complementary “sipping glass” from Remington Paving Co. We will feature “Samplings” of gourmet delights from our local restaurants and caterers. We will also be raffling off a chance for a Royal Caribbean Cruise made possible by Chris Van Vorst and Blue Skies Travel (chances are $5.00 ea. on sale now) that will be drawn at this event. Alzheimer’s Association Of The Capital District

Will be offering a One Hour program explaining the basics of Alzheimer’s & Dementia and a section addressing the role of Care Givers followed by a Question & Answer Session. The FREE One Hour “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia” Program includes:

· Exploring the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia.

· Examining what happens in a brain affected by Alzheimer’s.

· Detailing the risk factors for and three general stages of the disease.

· Identifies FDA-approved treatments available to treat some symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

· Looking ahead to what’s on the horizon for Alzheimer’s research.

· Offering helpful Alzheimer’s Association resources.

· Discussing the vital role Care Givers perform in assisting family members or friends affected by Alzheimer’s and what programs exist to aid Care Givers.

Troy Area AIDS Walk, September 22

Calling All Walkers: Take Steps to Support the Troy Damien Center

The Troy Area United Ministries (TAUM) is once again sponsoring a 5K Walk/ fund-raising event for the Damien Center, on Sunday afternoon, September 22. The Damien Center located in the TAUM building in South Troy is a hospitality center for persons infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. The center provides meals, social and recreational opportunities, peer support, education, and referral services. It is also the Troy site for the Albany Center’s PAWS program which provides food and supplies for pets of people with HIV/AIDS.

This year marks the 4th AIDS walk in Troy We welcome groups and individuals to join us in the AIDS Walk. Forms to enroll teams or friends in this event are available at taum.org. Donations are also accepted through the TAUM website, taum.org or on site on September 22. All proceeds go directly to Damien Center programs.

The Poestenkill “Bread of Life” food pantry, 772 Route 351, Poestenkill, NY 12140 is a community program. Anyone from the Poestenkill community is welcome to volunteer on the open dates to pull food requests. This is a physically demanding task and requires lifting food filled boxes and bags.

We are open three time each month, 1st and 3rd Thursday evenings, 5pm to 7pm and the 4th Saturday, 10 am to noon. If you would like to share some of your time and are able to do hard work to help your neighbor, please visit any open date or call 518-283-6045 and leave a name and phone number.

We have a table at the Poestenkill Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning 9 am to noon. Come and see us there for more information. The market is on the front lawn of the Poestenkill Town Hall rain or shine.

NAMI Columbia County Family-to-Family Course Educates About Mental Illness

(Valatie, NY) One in five families has a loved one who’s been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. Like any other chronic illness, these illnesses affect not only the person with the diagnosis, but the entire family. NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a free, confidential, eleven session course for family, significant others and friends of people living with mental illness. The comprehensive course is taught by trained NAMI members with lived experience and offers education and support, teaching knowledge and skills that help families cope more effectively. A local course begins on September 24th and will meet through December 10th on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 – 8:30 at Niverville-Chatham United Methodist Church, 28 Church St, Niverville, NY 12130. The course is sponsored by NAMI Columbia County, NY. Classes fill up quickly and pre-registration is required on or before September 17th.

NAMI Family-to-Family is designed to facilitate a better understanding of mental illness, to increase coping skills and to empower participants to become advocates for their loved ones. Presentations, discussion and interactive exercises take place in a group setting to provide mutual support and shared positive impact. Participants will learn about managing crises, solving problems and communicating effectively. Discover how to take care of yourself and manage stress, find out about local supports and services, up-to-date information on mental health conditions (Schizophrenia, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, PTSD and dual diagnosis) and how they affect the brain. Participants will learn about current treatments, evidence-based therapies, medications and side effects.

Family-to-Family has been taught nationwide to hundreds of thousands of family members. People find it to be life changing. If someone you love is living with mental illness, you are not alone. Angel Names Association Annual Memorial Walk

Angel Names Association (ANA) will hold its 14th Annual Memorial Walk on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at the Saratoga State Spa Park in Saratoga Springs, NY. The walk is being held in recognition of National Pregnancy Loss and Infant Death Awareness month.

Registration begins at 12:00 pm and the walk will follow at 1:15 pm. The day includes children’s activities, light refreshments and prizes. Everyone is welcomed to attend this uplifting, free family event to walk and raise awareness of stillbirth, pregnancy loss and infant death.

AARP Tax Aide Program

AARP Tax Aide Program is looking for volunteers. The Tax Aide Program is a free tax preparation service for all members of our community. There are many opportunities that are available for our volunteers. Tax Preparers work directly with the tax payer to complete their tax return. Client Facilitators welcome taxpayers and help organize their paperwork. Technology Coordinators manage computer equipment. Local Coordinators who manage the site, volunteers and schedules. Communications Coordinators who help recruit new volunteers. We have sites in Columbia and Rensselaer Counties. Volunteers will receive training. Mountain Bike Enthusiasts  –  Trail Builders Wanted

Town of Sand Lake has granted MTB trail building on a town property in Averill Park.

This is an easily accessible, local area with a very interesting terrain.

We’re now looking for a work crew to complete a finished circuit.

Progress has been made on most trails but trail benching and drainage projects remain.

It is important to note that we could add some fun features as we go.

Catholic Charities Tri-County Services coordinates school supply programs throughout our communities and we are in need of *new* supplies from backpacks & notebooks to graphing calculators & sneakers. You can help a child start off on the road to a successful school year!

Search and Rescue Volunteers Needed

The Tri-State Emergency Team is recruiting volunteers to provide wildland and underwater searches within a 100-mile radius of Waterford, NY. This includes all aspects of field and underwater search. The Tri-State Emergency Team responds when requested by NYS Forest Rangers and other Police Agencies throughout New York State, Western Vermont and Massachesettes.

We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need. The team will provide training and complete support as needed. Our headquarters is located in Waterford. Applicants need not live in Waterford to volunteer. Greenbush Cemetery in need of donations

The Greenbush Cemetery was incorporated in 1845. From Columbia Turnpike, one can see we are an old, historic cemetery in the Town of East Greenbush. However, we are still active and offering lots sales for a reasonable cost in three new sections.

With lifestyle changes in a more mobile culture, our cemetery is suffering financially. Lot sales are way down and more cremations are being done rather than burials. Cemeteries are forced to rely on donations to keep operating.

The Greenbush Cemetery estimates the operating cost for 2019 is $20,000.00. We will need to raise $15,000.00 to stay operational for this year. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help maintain this historic cemetery in East Greenbush.

Land Trust Spring Bottle Drive

Return your bottles and cans and help the Schodack Area Land Trust (SALT).

Through an arrangement with Six-Cent Redemption, behind Starbucks in Hannaford Plaza, SALT will receive six cents for every container you donate to the cause. Simply drop off your containers and say, “These are for SALT.” No need to wait or feed cans into a machine.

SALT is a 13-year-old not-for-profit which manages 60 acres of land open to the public for passive recreation. Access to the property is from Thoroughbred Dr. off Palmer Rd. SALT’s biggest expense is insurance.

Sheriff Patrick Russo Announces Membership Drive

The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute will begin its annual Honorary Membership drive in Rensselaer County according to Sheriff Patrick Russo.

The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute was established in 1979. It is a not-for-profit corporation, tax exempt organization, and contributions to the Institute are tax deductible.

While the Sheriff’s Office is a unit of county government, many of the concerns of Sheriffs and other law enforcement agencies are best addressed on a statewide level. The Sheriffs’ Institute provides centralized training programs and services for all Sheriffs’ Offices, where those programs and services would be unavailable or impractical on a single county basis.

The flagship program of the Sheriffs’ Institute is the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp for economically challenged children. The Sheriffs’ Camp, in its 42nd year of operation, is located on Keuka Lake and 840 children from across New York State attend each summer. The Sheriffs’ Institute pays the entire cost of the camp stay and transportation. Most children attending wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity for vacation travel or a summer camp experience.

“In these difficult economic times we cannot forget our youth who will not have the opportunity for a summer camp experience or a summer vacation,” Sheriff Patrick Russo said. “By becoming an honorary member, you are supporting the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp for economically disadvantaged children.”

In addition, the Sheriffs’ Institute operates a scholarship program that provides one scholarship to each of New York State’s Community College’s Criminal Justice Programs. This program is designed to help attract the best and the brightest to the criminal justice vocation.

Last year our roads were resurfaced, many monuments righted, lawn was mowed several times and

a new entrance sign was placed. Volunteers work hard to see that these are accomplished.

N.Y.S. Board of Cemeteries inspection gave a mark of good standing and congratulated volunteers

on great work. Thank you Boy Scout Troop 528 of Poestenkill, who placed 60 flags for our Veterans.

The public is invited to the cemetery between dusk and dawn. Monuments from the oldest generation

can be found with a beautiful view from the top of the hill. A visit will be informative and one will enjoy

Still Looking For Some Weekend Warriors

The Sand Lake Ambulance has existed as a volunteer ambulance for 60 years, and we intend to be here for another 60. We are looking for people who want to help out, but may not have all the time in the world. You may be able to help out by giving us part of your weekend. We would recommend for us and for the volunteer that you try to do a couple of times a month. You only need to be able to drive a box truck, lift 50+ pounds, be willing to learn the radios, lights, and our guidelines, and follow through on the commitment. We’ll train you. We Need EMT’s and Drivers We Will Train You

The Sand Lake Ambulance has been in existence for 60 years. We have operated as primarily a volunteer organization for most of that time. We need your help to keep our costs down by filling out as many shifts with volunteer EMT’s and drivers as we can. We could particularly use recent retirees who are looking to stay active working days during the week.

If you have ever been interested in becoming certified to provide emergency care to friends, family, neighbors, or others, we will pay for that training. The course is 4 months long and will require some commitment of time and work. And we will ask you to ride as a member for at least 2 years with Sand Lake Ambulance for training you. We also train ambulance drivers in EVOC training.

We generally work on keeping our skills up with regular training and try to keep it both educational and enjoyable. And as an active member of the ambulance, you’ll be working calls and helping your community. You need to be in fairly decent physical health and able to lift 50 pounds fairly easily, you need to be okay with working with trauma patients or sick community members, and you need to be willing to get up at all hours to do it.

Please consider joining, we need your service. We aren’t saying it won’t be work, but it will be worth it.

Brunswick Cares Food Pantry

We are excited to share that Brunswick Cares Food Pantry has been selected to be a part of the Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag Program, which is designed to make it easy for customers to contribute to their local community while supporting the environment.

For the month of August, each time a $2.50 reusable Fight Hunger Bag is purchased at the Hannaford located at 126th Street Troy, $1 will be donated to Brunswick Cares Food Pantry.
