#6 H Jay Dinshah: International Influences

The International Vegetarian Union held World Vegetarian Congresses every two or three years from 1908 (Dresden Germany) to 2010 (Jakarta/Bali Indonesia.).  In 1965 the congress was held in Swanick, England and H Jay Dinshah made plans to attend. On September 3 he addressed the delegates on the topic of Ahimsa: A Bridge Between East and West.

If the British gave India a common language, English, to use, Indian influence on the empire builders was more profound.  The ancient traditions of vegetarianism were taken up by a significant number of westerners who spent time on the subcontinent.  Vegetarianism is an expression of Ahimsa– an ancient Indian principle of nonviolence. Ahimsa is a key virtue of Jainism and other dharmic religions: Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. It is akin to The Golden Rule.

In the mid-19th century, in the United States, nonviolent action–the refusal to pay taxes in support of war and slavery– had put Henry David Thoreau in a New England jail. His ideas of civil disobedience were read in Russia by Count Leo Tolstoy who would in turn write fervently in opposition to war and flesh-eating. Tolstoy’s writings were an influence on Mahatma Gandhi when he was developing a system to gain redress of grievances for Indians in South Africa. Later Gandhi used civil disobedience to free India from foreign rule. In 1965 Martin Luther King was employing Gandhian methods in the United States civil rights movement.

Following his talk, Jay was invited to speak in many countries. Indians were particularly sad to see their youth abandoning vegetarian traditions. Thus, it was that Jay Dinshah planned a ‘Round the World Tour from mid-1967 into 1968 which took him to Europe, the Middle East, India, the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and back to New Jersey.
