Invisible Cities Mixed Media Workshop
Join us at the Troy Public Library where artist and instructor Sarah Nenno Bowen will be hosting a two-part workshop in two-hour sessions at the Troy Public Library on
Mondays, January 6 & 13, at 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Each session will be led by an excerpt from the book “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino, and each session will have its own excerpt. Read and respond to this piece of literature with the use of materials such as paint, paper, graphite, markers, and more to create a mixed media masterpiece. Register in person, online, or by phone.
This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.

Book Signing: Leroy Collins, The Running Back
Join us January 11th, at 1pm, in welcoming NFL great Leroy Collins at his book signing at the Rensselaer Library. Meet this local legend who started his career in the Capital Region playing against the teams we all played for in high school.
Collin’s book The Running Back (From the wheelchair to the NFL) will be available for purchase and signing. This true story follows a young man’s journey as he battles back from injuries sustained in a tragic automobile accident. From the vantage point of his wheelchair an NFL game on TV inspires him to dream the impossible. As he recovers, he sets his sights on playing football in the NFL. This story takes you into his mind and heart as he makes decisions that take him off track from reaching his dream. He develops some bad habits that can not only destroy a career but can potentially take his life. But his faith along with the love from his family put his life back on course making his unlikely dream a miraculous reality.

New Associate Pastor at Brunswick Church
The new year brings with it a new associate pastor at Brunswick Church (PCUSA). Joining Senior Pastor Henry Kim is Pastor Kim Jackson. She was born and raised overseas as part of a foreign service family, but most recently called Washington D.C. home. She will be living in Troy as she begins this ministry. Pastor Kim brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience to this call. We invite everyone to join us in worship on Thursdays at 7 pm and Sundays at 8:30 am and 11 am as we welcome Pastor Kim Jackson in January. Sharing Nature with Children, with Lisa Hoyt

Sand Lake Town Hall—Rensselaer Plateau Alliance’s Plateau People at Work Lecture Series: “Sharing Nature with Young People,” presented by Lisa Hoyt of Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center. Dyken Pond provides high quality environmental education, outdoor recreation and youth development opportunities in a variety of programs. Dyken Pond is a Proud Partner in Rensselaer Youth Outdoors (RYO), bringing expanded environmental education opportunities to Rensselaer County youth and families. Lisa will talk about Dyken Pond activities and Rensselaer Youth Outdoors. She will share her love of the outdoors and her passion for connecting children and others to nature.$5 suggested donation goes directly to support conservation on the Rensselaer Plateau.

4-H Winter Fairs Held
The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County 4-H Youth Development program recently held two Winter Fairs, one at Tamarac High School, hosted by the Clover Kids & Critters 4-H Club and another at the Poestenkill Evangelical Lutheran Church, which was hosted by the Green Earthlings 4-H Club. Participants brought projects, made from natural and recycled materials to be evaluated by 4-H Teen Evaluators. Additionally, the youth also had the opportunity to create other winter themed crafts and participated in community service projects at each location. The Rensselaer County 4-H program would like to thank all of the 4-H members and volunteers who helped with the Winter Fairs.

The volunteers at the Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop work hard to provide a clean and organized shopping experience. Wicks Agency; an old gift box from The Village Shop; a pennant from Fox’s Wild Animal Farm; an ice scraper from Joe Werger’s Mobil Station; or a post card from Tifft’s Beach? Did you keep a scrapbook with newspaper clippings and programs from Lyric Theater, 4-H, or Little League?
Join us January 14 and bring whatever you have at home relating to the Town of Sand Lake to share and talk about. We’ll take a few minutes and try to talk about everything brought. It’s part of your history, but it’s also part of Sand Lake’s history! So look in those closets and attics! It promises to be a walk down memory lane.

I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This monthly report is an example of my commitment to keeping residents informed of the activities of the Schodack Town Board. During December, the Town Board adopted a resolution honoring Katherine Lubbers for her dedicated service to our community as Receiver of Taxes from 2004-2019. We wish Kathy all of the best in retirement.
At the year-end December 30 meeting, the Town Board adopted the annual salary expense for employees and elected officials for calendar year 2020. This list as well as the entire adopted 2020 budget can be viewed at www.schodack.org.
Schodack Town Hall recently hosted one of three Criminal Justice Reform forums that were held in Rensselaer County to address New York’s criminal justice reforms that took effect on January 1. Thank you to District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly and other county elected officials for hosting this informative event. There was a terrific turnout for the Castleton-on-Hudson Farmers & Artisans Market inaugural Winter Fest at the Castleton Fire Department. I enjoyed shopping the vendors, making an ornament and visiting with Santa. The event was so well attended, there will be a February Fest on February 7 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Castleton Fire Department — another wonderful opportunity to enjoy our community and support our local vendors.
Our community experienced significant snowfall during December. I wish to thank the entire Highway Department workforce for their excellent work in keeping our roadways clear and safe. Our Highway Department is second to none, led by Superintendent of Highways Ken Holmes.

Poestenkill Town Board Meeting Minutes
Poestenkill Town Board – Meeting Minutes – Thursday, December 19, 2019
CAC Member, Jeffrey Briggs presented to the Town Board members the Poestenkill Natural Resources Inventory – 2019 and discuss the document. The CAC worked with partners which provided technical and financial assistance, including NYSDEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program, County of Rensselaer and the Rensselaer Land Trust. As part of the project the CAC created a series of 22 maps as part of the Natural Resources Inventory, which describes local natural resources in detail.
This document is available to the public at the Town Library and on the Town website.
Lou Anne Lundgren reported on the activities at the Library and thanked Supervisor Jacangelo for all of his cooperation and efforts in making the Library a wonderful place and looks forward to working with the Board and the new Supervisor.
Approval of 2020-2021 Fire Service Agreement – motion made by Councilman Hass, seconded by Councilman Van Slyke and passed unanimously – authorizing Supervisor Jacangelo to sign the agreement.
Resolution – The Town Board voted unanimously on a resolution of grateful recognition of the services of Supervisor Dominic Jacangelo.
Resolution – The Town Board voted unanimously on a resolution in accepting the 2019 Natural Resource Inventory for the Town of Poestenkill.
Resolution – The Town Board voted unanimously on a resolution acknowledging the conduct and completion of an audit of the Town Court Financial Records.

Schodack Supervisor’s Report for December 2019
In a continuing effort to keep residents informed of my activities as well as issues pertaining to the Town, I submit to them this report for December of 2019. As always, further information can be found on the Town’s website or it’s social media pages.
I want to start by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and thank everyone for their support these past two years during my first term. My second term began on January 1st, 2020 and I look forward over these next two years to continuing the good work we’ve done.
On December 5th, the Town received word that the Third Appellate Division court affirmed a previous ruling in favor of the Town as it pertained to an Article 78 proceeding regarding the proposed Amazon Sales Distribution center. I’m happy that two courts have now upheld the work and authority of our Planning Board in making decisions regarding this project. I’m proud of our Planning Department, our Planning Board, and our legal counsel for the hard work and dedication they have shown throughout this process and I’m hopeful that this brings to an end the additional costs we’ve had to bear in defending ourselves in these proceedings.
I regularly spend time with Highway Superintendent Ken Holmes visiting and discussing potential areas of concern in town. Our Highway Department strives to be proactive in identifying and addressing these issues and I’m thankful for the watchful eyes of Ken and our Highway Crew. Recent trips have been to examine some sewer problems along Miller Road, and a currently private road through a development in East Schodack that isn’t being properly maintained by the developer during and after winter storms creating a hazard for residents that live on it. I’m hopeful we can reach a solution that protects taxpayers and ensures the developer fulfills their responsibilities.
And Finally, I’d like to end by thanking outgoing Receiver of Taxes Kathy Lubbers for her years of service and wish her well in her retirement.

Winter Walk at Robert Ingalls Preserve
Sat, January 11, 2020 • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
A winter walk through Rensselaer Land Trust’s compact, but diverse jewel will take us along the sparking Black Brook, across a field of glacial erratics, and passing by evidence of long-gone people’s efforts to wrest a living from this rocky land. We will snowshoe or hike as conditions suggest; participants may need traction devices such as cleats/microspikes if it is icy. The walk will cover about two miles and involve up and down some steep slopes, negotiating rocky and uneven terrain, and likely some icy, wet, or muddy spots. News from Averill Park CSD
The Averill Park Key Club visited Crossgates Mall and sold Bells of Life leading up to the holiday break. The group helped raise more than $1,500, which benefits Albany Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital. Way to go everyone!
West Sand Lake Elementary first grade students from Mrs. Zalucky’s classroom created holiday care packages to send to troops stationed in Afghanistan, including a former Averill Park CSD graduate, Matt Schumaker, class of 2017. Six boxes were sent, which included snacks, toiletries and cards. Students learned how an act of kindness can be spread across thousands of miles. Great work!
Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary K-Kids volunteered at a monthly Sand Lake Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner recently. Students did everything from taking dinner orders to serving food and clearing tables. Great job everyone!

Amanda Thrasher – 2019 4-H Lohnes Award Recipient
Amanda Thrasher, the daughter of Randy Thrasher and Debbie Gutierrez of Brunswick received the 2019 4-H Lohnes Award. This award is presented to a senior 4-H equine member that displays outstanding sportsmanship, hard work ethic, ease in working with others and is simply a good role model. Amanda has a hearty and vast 4-H career doing a number of projects from dogs and beef cattle as examples to her focal point of horses which includes showing, educational equine teams and volunteering extensively. Amanda is currently a junior at Tech Valley High School and is very involved in school activities and her community. We thank and congratulate Amanda for her hard work and support of our 4-H Program and being an outstanding role model to her fellow 4-H Members.

Highlight Acting Troupe to hold auditions for Nunsense the Mega Musical
Highlight Acting Troupe will hold auditions for Nunsense The Mega Musical Version. Book Music & Lyrics by Dan Goggin. Auditions will be held at the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church on Thursday, Jan. 9th @ 6:30PM and Sunday, Jan. 12th @ 4:00PM. The show will be co-directed by Christine & Ethel LeVan with Marietta Mitchell as the musical director. The cast includes both males and females ages 18 and up. Performance dates are May 1-3 and 8-10.
Please come prepared to auditions with 16-32 measures of a song along with the music in the key you would like to sing in.
