The weather is getting colder, so stay warm by visiting the Holiday Mitten Tree, sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County. Stop by the Cornell Cooperative Extension office between 8:00am and 4:00pm, Monday through Friday to grab a warm hat, gloves or scarf. All items are free of charge, so take what you and your family need. Donations of winter clothing items will also be gladly accepted. Ilium Literary Club Meeting

Harvest Connection App Rolled Out

On Wednesday, November 20th Engel’s Acres in Brunswick hosted the roll out of the Harvest Connection App. This farm store was bursting at the seams with interested officials, residents and fellow farmers. The App is a tool developed through a Farm to Market USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) grant that Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Rensselaer County received. With help from Spiral Design, CCE was able to see the app come to life. Preceding the app was the Harvest Connection website which was initiated years ago under the direction of the Rensselaer County office of Economic Development and Planning which included only specialty crop agriculture products. The Farm to Market USDA grant allowed CCE of Rensselaer County to expand the Harvest Connection website to include all agriculture products. The Harvest Connection website is designed to be a bridge for consumers to source local, fresh and nutritious farm products. The app which was rolled out this month is one more tool to help drive consumers to the website and ultimately to farms and local farmer’s markets with the goal of increasing farm gate sales. Harvest Connection includes farms from Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady and Washington Counties. Use of the app will allow consumers to quickly search with their mobile devices where local product, closest to them, can be found. Harvest Connection includes a consumer enrollment that provides electronic newsletters that contains recipes, growing trends, seasonal tips and help consumers understand better how food and fiber is grown or raised. Harvest Connection will continue to enroll farms and consumers. The app can be downloaded for free at the Apple Store and Google Play Store. LOC Fashion Show Success

Thanks to all who made the recent Troy Chapter of the Ladies of Charity fashion show a great success. Over 200 people attended. It was held at the Franklin Terrace in Troy with fashions from local shops. All proceeds raised went to the Roarke Center in Troy and other local charities.

Holiday Open House and Vendor Market at the Stephentown Memorial Library

December 7, 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Start your holiday shopping out at the SML Vendor Market and Open House. We will have many vendors with lots of great products including pottery, baskets, knitted items, artwork, fragrances, jewelry, and more.

Santa will be joining us at 3:00 to meet with all of the kids (and kids at heart) of Stephentown.

The students of the Berlin Middle/High School will perform for everyone at 3:30. We will have children’s activities, hot chocolate, coffee, and other treats for sale.

Bring items to add to our Mitten Tree! We collect new and gently used hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves and give it to those in need.

Friends of Rensselaer Library was a success

The Friends would like to thank everyone who donated bake goods and all those folks who bought goodies from our Election Day Bake Sale. We had 2 locations, one at City Hall and the other at the Rensselaer Senior Center. Both locations saw an increase in participation and profits this year and we look forward to next years Election Day Bake Sale. Our sincere thanks to all the workers, bakers and people who bought baked goods.

Timeless Yuletide Tales

On Sunday, December 8 at 3 pm, the North Chatham Free Library will host Laurie Portocarrero, storyteller, at their annual holiday party. Please join us as she tells her Timeless Yuletide Tales amid the gathering darkness of a winter night. Laurie Portocarrero is an actor, storyteller, drama teacher and director living in Upstate New York in the United States. She has studied and taught movement, drama and speech in the U.S., Canada, Switzerland and Australia. A long-time associate member of The Actors’ Ensemble, Walking the Dog Theater, and Threefold Mystery Drama Group, she has most recently been seen in Shakespeare’s Supernaturals, Touch of the Irish, and Thornton Wilder’s 3-Minute Plays. Refreshments, a quilt raffle drawing of the Stormy Nights King-Size Quilt provided by the Sew ‘N Sews, and gingerbread people decorating will follow. This family friendly event is open to all.

Children’s Holiday Shopping Day

On Saturday, December 7th, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., children may shop for family and friends at the Nassau Library “store” which will be set up in the library’s community room. They will be able to choose from a variety of knickknacks, holiday ornaments, costume jewelry and other seasonal items. Prices are guaranteed to be affordable, and the library’s volunteens will be on hand to help wrap gifts. The library will accept donations for the sale (both gift items and wrapping material) until Friday, December 6th. When considering making a donation, please ask yourself if the item is in like-new condition and if it is something a family member would truly enjoy receiving. – Cider and donuts will be served while children shop!

Friends of the Rensselaer Library Holiday Party

The Friends will hold their Holiday party on Thursday December 19th at 5:30 pm at Salisbury Place on Washington Ave. We will be ordering off the menu so everyone can have what they want and get a separate check. Those who wish to can participate in our grab bag, it’s a $10.00 limit. We will have a short 10 minute meeting just to approve the November minutes while we wait for our dinners. The Church of the Covenant UM in Averill Park will host its annual Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 7. Come visit the more than a dozen handcraft, gift and food shops designed for all your holiday shopping. You will find plenty of holiday-themed items as well as year-round gifts and decor. On the main level, visit The Doll Boutique with handmade American Girl clothing, the Pet Corner, Collectibles, the Country Store, Handcrafts & Decorations, Holiday Greenery and Religious Items. Carols for a Cause

KofC Breakfast with Santa December 15th

Join us for the monthly St Jude the Apostle K of C “All You Can Eat” Pancake breakfast on Sunday, December 15th from 8am -11am in Damman Hall and have “Breakfast with Santa”!

Hopes Kitchen December Free Community Meal

Thursday December 12th, will mark the date of the December Free Community Meal. This months meal will include, Delicious Roast Pork, Hot German Potato Salad, Green Beans, Applesauce, Tossed Salad, Rolls and Butter, Applecrips, Coffee, Hot or Iced Tea and Lemonade. Dinner is served from 3:30 to 6:30 the second Thursday of every month.

Hopes Kitchen extends a welcome to everyone, singles, families, homeless, teens, and seniors or if you just want a good home cooked meal and some conversation. This is not a church membership recruitment plan, it is a ministry to feed those that are hungry.

Hopes Kitchen is a ecumenical ministry between Hope Lutheran Church in North Greenbush, and the Rensselaer Presbyterian Church at 34 Broadway, Rensselaer, Now in our 10th month attendance keeps expanding, but we are always looking for more diners. We can seat up to 100 people at one time. Mark your calendar now for this enjoyable evening, piano offerings by Chris between 4 and 5 add a special touch.

Wynantskill Fire Department Dedicates New Utility 42

On Tuesday, October 29th, 2019, the Wynantskill Fire Department dedicated their newest piece of apparatus, Utility 42, to deceased member Tom Goyer. Tom lived his entire life in Wynantskill – spending 45 of those years volunteering with the Wynantskill Fire Department. Tom was the driving force behind the purchase of the first district-owned fire police vehicle, and original Utility 42, a 1997 Dodge van. The new Utility 42 is a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado.

In addition to serving our town through the fire department, Tom married his wife, Judy, in 1965 and raised a family. He also served in the United States Navy, and was a long time usher at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Troy, NY. A heartfelt thank you to all the members of the Goyer family, members of the American Legion Post 1489, members of the North Greenbush Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners, and Deacon Paul Carney of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Troy,NY, for joining us on this special occasion.

Sara Westcott, Race Director of the Ken Morgan Memorial Clove Run, proudly presented a check in the amount of $4,450 to Paula Sancomb, manager of The Anchor, Northeast Regional Food Pantry on November 11th, 2019. The Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis, in collaboration with the Castleton Road Racing Commission, was proud to sponsor / host the annual Clove Run. The 2019 event, held in August, was well-attended and supported by many local businesses. That support results in the ability to provide much-needed financial aid to The Anchor, Castleton’s food pantry.

Fort Crailo DAR Chapter Good Citizen Awards

November 9, 2019, The Fort Crailo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had their Good Citizen Essay Award ceremony at the Rensselaer Public Library. Chairmen Doris Roberts presented the award to Andrew Kretzschmar a senior from Rensselaer High. Congratulations to our other winners Taylor Demers a senior from Columbia High School, Makaila Maier a senior from Maple Hill High School and Andrew Gorman a senior from Averill Park High School. Taylor Demers will be moving on to the district level competition.

The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.

This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.

Rensselaer County 4-H Represented at Eastern National 4-H Roundup

Rensselaer County was represented at the Eastern National 4-H Roundup, held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky. Brigham Logue of Johnsonville spent some fast paced days in Kentucky as part of the educational trip associated with being on the New York State 4-H Horse Communications Team. In addition to the Horse Communications Team, Brigham traveled with all the other New York National Team members from across the state for Horse Judging, Hippology and Horse Bowl. It was a great experience according to Brigham and as exciting as the contest day was, he really appreciated the day spent in and around Lexington where the New York delegation went to the Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (KESMARC), Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, Kentucky Horse Park and Keeneland. Members were able to explore careers and businesses pivotal to the Equine Industry. The New York Educational Teams represented our state very well. The Hippology Team placed 5th and Horse Bowl Team 3rd overall with three members placing in the top 10. The members of the Horse Communications Team all placed in the top 10 in their respective divisions. Our New York public speaker Carissa Hilsher from Allegany County placed 10th , Team presenters Annie Born of Oneida County and Laura Bagley of Yates County placed 3rd and Brigham placed 5th for Individual presenters. As a result, the New York State Horse Communications Team placed 2nd overall and brought home plates declaring them the Reserve Champion Horse Communications Team. A hearty thanks goes out to the Horse Communications Team Coach, Sarah Bagley, New York State 4-H Horse Program, volunteers, parents and local supporters of our 4-H program. New Electric Car Charging Station in Sand Lake

There is a new electric car charging station at the Sand Lake Town Hall in the lower parking lot. The street address is 8428 Miller Hill Rd, in Sand Lake (12153)! If you’re traveling via the route 43 corridor, It is the only charging station on the way to Jiminy Peak in MA. We are very grateful for the grant we received to provide this service -at no cost to the town.

Stephentown Historical Society dinner rescheduled to Sunday, Dec. 8

The Stephentown Historical Society has rescheduled its holiday carry-in dinner to Sunday, December 8, at 1:00 p.m. at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road (off Garfield Road), Stephentown, New York. The choir of the Stephentown Federated Church will sing some seasonal songs and lead a sing-along. Officers and board members will be elected at the brief business meeting.

For the dinner, bring a dish large enough to share: main course, side dish or dessert. Beverages and table service are provided. Instead of a gift exchange, a monetary collection will be taken to support the Stephentown Food Pantry. All meetings are free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. Ringing Salvation Army Bells in Memory of Chris Bascom

Salvation Army bells will be rung at the East Greenbush Walmart on Saturday, November 30, 10 – 8 pm, to commemorate the birthday of Christopher Bascom. On Saturday, Dec. 7, 9-3 pm, students from Columbia High School will likewise man the red kettles in his memory at the same location.

Christopher was 16 and a junior at CHS when he was killed by a hit and run, drunk driver in 2003. Christopher was a giving and caring person and always endeavored to make people happy; thus, it is appropriate that he be honored in a manner which helps others.

The Salvation Army assists the needy throughout the year but at Christmas time their red kettles help redirect focus on those less fortunate. Donations may also be sent directly to the Salvation Army Headquarters, Troy Corps, 410 River Street, Troy, NY 12180. If you want your contribution to remain local and/or made in Chris’ name, please write his name on the memo line.

Cub Scout Pack 2257 of East Greenbush Food Drive

Cub Scout Pack 2257 of East Greenbush collected food for the Regional Food Bank in Albany. Scouts collected 971 lbs. of food, more than doubling last year collection of 450 lbs. of food. Cub Scouts is for girls and boys in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Scouts would like to thank all that donated food which already has been distributed to local food pantries. The food drive was made possible with support from Price Chopper / Market 32 who donated drop off bags and “Thank You” reusable bags for those that donated at least three food items.

Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony

Melvin Roads American Legion is conducting a Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance ceremony on December 7th, 2019 at the post, 200 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush, NY. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor caused our entry into another world war. All those that served during World War II will be remembered. Refreshments are served after the ceremony.

Join Rensselaer Youth Outdoors at the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center on Sunday, December 15th from 1:00-3:30 pm as we honor the Winter Solstice by spending a day outdoors and enjoying the Annual Yule Log Tradition.

Help us search for the hidden yule log, spend some time around the community campfire, make a craft, collect some greens, and relax during this busy time of year. A wise owl will tell Joseph Bruchac’s story “How Grandmother Spider Stole The Sun”. Light refreshments will be available, or bring your own to share.

Columbia Viola Player Performing with ESYO’s Symphony Orchestra

Congratulations to Allison Headley, a junior who plays in the Columbia High School Chamber Orchestra, for earning a spot in the viola section of the Empire State Youth Orchestra’s flagship Symphony Orchestra, its most advanced ensemble that is reserved for players whose technical skills and musicality are at the highest level.

The orchestra receives regular professional coaching and performs in the finest concert venues, including the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and Carnegie Hall.

As part of ESYO’s Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Headley will perform in the Melodies of Christmas, a popular holiday program televised on CBS6 that has raised more than $8 million for the pediatric oncology program at Albany Medical Center. She will also play at a fall rehearsal weekend retreat in the Catskills at Frost Valley YMCA, an annual young people’s concert, a free concert for senior citizens, and in other concerts.

Next summer, she will join the Symphony on a tour to Argentina and Uruguay.

Mara Little and Mario Hepp were asked to speak at the annual Best Buddies Gala in Albany. Best Buddies creates friendships, employment opportunities and leadership development for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Mara and Mario did a fantastic job representing an outstanding program and the Averill Park Central School District.

Our elementary school Girls on the Run teams participated in the fall 5K at Jennings Landing. This program encourages girls to be respectful and responsible, work together as a team, and helps them develop self confidence. Way to go everyone!

Seven of our fall varsity athletic teams were named NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Teams, including boys soccer, girls soccer, girls volleyball, boys cross country, girls cross country, girls tennis and boys golf. A team’s average GPA for 75% of its roster must be greater than or equal to 90.00. Great job teams!

Youth Snowmobile Safety Course

On Saturday, December 7, 2019 the Grafton Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club and Grafton Lakes State Park will host a snowmobile safety course for young people ages 10 to 18. Students must be at least 10 years old on the day of the course to attend. Parents are encouraged to stay and participate. The course will be held at the Grafton VFW/Fire Hall at 581 South Road from 8:15am to approximately 4:30pm. The course will be taught by NYS certified volunteer instructor Jim Blessing. Topics covered include NYS laws and regulations, riding skills, trail emergencies, protecting the environment, maintenance and repair, and trailering. Three Columbia Blue Devils Make College Commitments

Three Columbia High School student athletes put ink to paper at a press conference on November 21 in the school’s auditorium, officially making their college commitments. Chesney Romer will play volleyball at Hamilton College, Hannah Scarano will play softball at Merrimack College and Owen Stefanko will play lacrosse at Long Island University.

“I want to congratulate all of the parents, family members and friends and coaches on this great achievement,” Columbia Athletic Director Michael Leonard told the audience at the press conference. “These three are outstanding, not just in the world of sports, but they have also been positive role models and leaders of our school community.”

Columbia Viola Player Performing with ESYO’s Symphony Orchestra

The orchestra receives regular professional coaching and performs in the finest concert venues, including the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and Carnegie Hall.

Next summer, she will join the Symphony on a tour to Argentina and Uruguay.

Sand Lake Center for the Arts presents Laughter on the 23rd Floor, written by Neil Simon and directed by Melanie Douglas. The play is based on Neil Simon’s experiences as a junior writer of a TV Comedy-Variety show called “Your Show of Shows,” and is set in 1953. The play follows the host, Max Prince, along with his staff of writers in scenes behind the scenes, to bring you a highly entertaining play! The play opens Friday, Dec. 6th and continues on the 7th, 12th, 13thand 14th at 8pm, and on Dec. 8th and 15th at 2:30pm. Prepaid reservations can be made at www.slca-ctp.org or by calling the office at 518-674-2007. The center offers free parking and is Handicapped accessible.

The Nutcracker by the Saratoga City Ballet

Act I features the magical party scene with Clara, Fritz and the whole family celebrating Christmas Eve, when the mice, rat king and soldiers take the stage for their epic battle. Clara is then led through the Land of Snow into the Land of Sweets, home of the Sugar Plum Fairy, her cavalier and her court, where they celebrate with dances from around the world; set to Tchaikovsky’s score.

Directed and choreographed by Beth Fecteau, this is Saratoga City Ballet’s 26th Anniversary production of the Nutcracker – a perfect holiday treat for audiences of all ages! Beth Fecteau’s choreography and production of Nutcracker premiered in 1996 at the Historic Cohoes Music Hall presented by Youth Ballet Company and Dance Eclectic. After two years and a growing school and cast, this production moved to The Egg and was performed annually until 2004. Beth retired the production when she was named Director of the Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs merging Youth Ballet Company into what is now the School of the Arts at the Museum of Dance. Beth is thrilled to be sharing her work with new dancers and a new organization in the 26th Year of Saratoga City Ballet’s production.

Pride@Prejudice Opens Friday,Dec. 6 at Schenectady Civic Players

Pride@Prejudice, by Daniel Elihu Kramer and directed by Mark Stephens, opens Friday, December 6, and plays through Dec. 15 at Civic Player’s, 12 South Church Street, Schenectady. The fairly faithful yet also fun and irreverent theatrical version of Jane Austen’s classic novel includes 21st century sensibilities within the 1820 setting of the story. Pride@Prejudice runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (December 6, 7, 8 and 11 through 15. Friday and Saturday curtains are at 8 pm. Highlight Acting Troupe to Hold Auditions for Once Upon A Pandora’s Box

The Highlight Acting Troupe will hold auditions for Once upon a Pandora’s Box written by Monica Flory adapted by Play Scripts. Once upon a time in New York City, Tabitha and her Brother Louis discover a box sitting in the hall of their apartment. When Tabitha opens the box, five imprisoned fairy tale villains escape. Free at last the dastardly villains begin to wreck the apartment, until they discover that the writing in Tabitha’s notebook will give them control of other fictional characters! Will Tabitha harness the power of her storytelling? Or will the villains run wild in New York? A clever comedy that demonstrates the importance of villains in every story. Auditions will be held on Friday, December 13th @ 6:30PM and Sunday December 15th @ 2:00PM at the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church Hoosick Street Troy NY. Ages 5-17 as this will be a children’s performance. Show dates will be February 28, 29 and March 1st.
