Lansingburgh Historical Society’s Annual Holiday party,talk and raffle will be Thursday, November 21, 2019 once again at the Van Schaick Country Club 201 Continental Ave., Cohoes, NY 12047. “The Anti Rent Strikers of the 1800’s” will be presented by well known and lively historian speaker, Michael Barrett at 7:00 pm. Our Special Connections workshop Learning from our loved ones
Beth Tephilah Synagogue, located on 82 River Street in Troy, will be having a special workshop Sunday, November 17th at 1 p.m. called “Our Special Connections”. Each person will be given the opportunity to share their life lessons about their loved ones who passed away. Everyday corresponds to a unique portion of the Torah and the day of passing of a person shows on the completion of all that person’s efforts of their lifetime. In this workshop we will compare the unique portion of the Torah for the day of passing of a particular loved one and see how that Torah portion can shed light on the lessons of that person’s lifetime. In addition to the workshop there will be served a vegan soup cafe with a variety of different gluten free soups and flatbreads some of the breads will be gluten-free as well. Different unique vegetable toppings , a spinach quinoa salad along with special herbal teas will also be served. All the foods are made with very little sugar or salt or oil and are very flavorful. Looking to Write? 2nd Ed. Writing Workshop with Amy Halloran
Richard Selzer was a Trojan who is writing about being a doctor is still assigned in medical classes to this day. His memoir about growing up in our city is a beautiful book, and we will use segments from it to inspire our writing. For this class, please read the assignment, and walk around the city of Troy, or your own neighborhood. Take snapshots and notes. We will use the raw materials of your observations to create a small piece of writing, and explore the habit of connecting to places with words. The class will be held at the Troy Public Library on Wednesday, November 20th, 5:30-7:30 pm.
No writing experience necessary, and this class may be taken without attending the first class. The content is related but the teaching will be independent of the other session.
This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.

Invites You to a Presentation: A Salute to Veterans and A World War I Member Share
We will acknowledge veterans in attendance and then turn our focus to World War I. While the war ended in 1918, most of our service members returned home in 1919 so this is the 100th anniversary of welcoming them home.
Ellen D’Aniello will give a brief presentation on the role of the Red Cross and the YMCA during the war effort. She will also present on her maternal grandfather who was a POW in WWI. The program will then be opened up for members to share about their WWI service members.

Men Invited to Recharge their Batteries, Refocus their Lives at 11/15-11/16 Retreat
Whether they’re worried about household finances, relationships with a spouse or family member, job stability or health related issues, men are never far away from a myriad of stress triggers in today’s frenetically paced life.
Those interested in setting aside those distractions and taking a more objective look at their lives are invited to attend, “A Retreat for Men: Finding Truth in a World of Lies, Political Correctness and Fake News.” The event runs from 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15 through 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at Christ the King Center (575 Burton Rd) in Greenwich, N.Y.
“We’ve hosted many retreats for women before, but this is the first time we’ve held one just for men,” said Retreat Coordinator Fr. Mark Chesnut. “Men don’t offer themselves time to recharge, refocus and reorient themselves to what’s truly meaningful in their lives. The purpose of this event is to give them a short amount of time where they can get away and re-examine their place in their families to become better human beings and more sensitive in an active, positive sense, to those around them.”
Stan Key, president of the Francis Asbury Society, will lead three sessions designed to help attendees refocus their decision making skills, as they seek to live a more abundant life. A former senior pastor at Loudonville Community Church, Key speaks frequently at conferences, retreats, camps and churches both in the U.S. and abroad.
“The program includes interactive group sessions, teaching, socializing between meals, as well as quiet, contemplative time for men to explore our expansive 612-acre property here in the rolling hills of Washington County,” Chesnut added.

Columbia Students Reach Ambassador level in Girl Scouts
Columbia High School Students from NENY Girl Scout Service Unit 136,Troop 1474 reached the Ambassador Level of scouting. Each girl has been active members of their troop and are excited to continue in Girl Scouts. The Ambassador Level is the highest Level a Girl Scout can reach. These girls will Focus on leader ship skills, community service and mentoring younger Girl Scouts throughout the next two years. Girls from Service Unit 136, Troop 1474 earned the Silver and Gold Torch Award. This award recognizes a Girl Scout Senior who acts as a leader in her community. Girl Scout Troop 1098 from Poestenkill Elementary organized a drive to collect unwanted Halloween candy for Operation Gratitude, a program that sends candy to troops overseas, and cards for a former Poestenkill student, currently deployed, Matthew Schumaker. The junior troop met with their principal to ask permission, designed the flyer, distributed boxes at school and the library, presented at a school assembly and made a video with the principal to request donations. Their hard work paid off because they collected 153 lbs of candy and many cards for Matthew. The girls sorted, packaged and shipped the treats out this week. The troop thanks all who donated to this very successful service project!

The volunteers at the Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop work hard to provide a clean, well-organized shopping experience. At the Rensselaer County 4-H General Interest Banquet 4-H volunteers and members were recognized for their leadership, dedication and outstanding achievements. 4-H members awarded county medals were: Amanda Thrasher (Beef Cattle), Shane Thrasher (Leadership), and Adam Film (Wood Science). 4-H members recognized for the their participation at the Schaghticoke Fair were: Luke Giglio and Bret Giglio, Shepherdship award for sheep, Ava Helou, Sydney Helou, Hannah Baker, and Kaelyn Eagan for Goat Herdsmanship award, and Aaron Cipperly, Swine Herdsmanship award.

Invites You to a Presentation: A Salute to Veterans and A World War I Member Share
We will acknowledge veterans in attendance and then turn our focus to World War I. While the war ended in 1918, most of our service members returned home in 1919 so this is the 100th anniversary of welcoming them home.
Ellen D’Aniello will give a brief presentation on the role of the Red Cross and the YMCA during the war effort. She will also present on her maternal grandfather who was a POW in WWI. The program will then be opened up for members to share about their WWI service members.

Logging in Grafton – Then and Now
Logging has always been part of Grafton’s history. In the earliest days, logging was done primarily by early settlers to build their own homes. Later it became an industry which continues to this day.
Join the Grafton Historical Society as Rynard Gundrum, jr talks about Grafton’s logging history, the transformation from completely hand done sawing and logging to the use to modern equipment and how the industry has changed. He will also discuss his multi -generational family’s participation in logging.

The 80 Year Old Widow and the B-29 Bomber
History comes alive when the Esquatak Historical Society presents Ron Gabriele telling the story of an original “Rosie the Riveter” on Friday, November 15, 7:00 p.m. at a new location – the Castleton Fire Department. Harvest Craft and Food Festival
Join us at a joint Harvest Craft and Food Festival on Saturday, November 16, 2019, from 9 AM to 2 PM, featuring creations from the members of Church of the Covenant in Averill Park, Pawling Avenue United Methodist Church in Troy, Bloomingrove Reformed Church in Defreestville, and First Reformed Church of Wynantskill. This ecumenical event will take place at the First Reformed Church, Corner of Main Avenue (NYS Rt. 66) and Church Streets in Wynantskill.
Each congregation will have a variety of interesting crafts for sale. There will also be homemade canned goods, specialty Royal Icing cookies, a homemade soup and salad lunch, as well as frozen homemade entrees for you to purchase for future enjoyment. In addition, there will be a combined bake sale with the proceeds benefiting community organizations.
To make your shopping experience a relaxing event, we are offering free coffee and donuts, free fresh-popped popcorn, and a free “Kids Space” where kids can enjoy face painting and create their own projects, allowing you to freely browse the many creations and goodies we have to offer.

Church Inventory Liquidation Sale
On November 16th the North Chatham United Methodist Church will be selling off a wide variety of items such as tents, tables, shelving, pallets, lights, etc. They will be auctioned off starting @ 10:00 AM. East Greenbush Fall Pick up
The 2019 Fall Leaf Pick up will begin on Monday, October 28, 2019 and will continue for four weeks including:
The week of October 28th, 2019, November 4th, 2019, November 11th, 2019, and November 18th, 2019
DPW employees will begin leaf pickup on Mondays, and traverse the entire town each week in the same manner until every road has been done. The employees will resume pothole patching and other winter preparation after the leaves and brush have been picked up for that week, and resume the same route the following week. If it snows, leaf pickup will be resumed as weather permits.
Leaves must be in biodegradable bags and brush is to be cut into 4’ lengths and bundled. Bags of leaves and bundles of brush must be placed on the side of the road just off the pavement. Please do not block any drainage structures or culverts and DO NOT place anything on the pavement.
Please be advised these are the only dates the Department of Public Works will be picking up leaves and bundles of brush. If you miss these dates, you may bring these items to the Transfer Station with proof of address. No permit is required for disposal of leaves and brush at the Transfer Station.

Tracey Rex Reports to the People of Schodack
I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This monthly report is an example of my commitment to keeping residents informed of the activities of the Schodack Town Board. All meetings of the Town Board, Planning Board, and Zoning Board can be viewed live or at a later date at https://townhallstreams.com/towns/schodack.
In addition to the regularly scheduled board meetings in October, the Town Board held a series of Budget Meetings to review and discuss the 2020 Tentative Budget for the Town of Schodack. Department heads did a great job of outlining and itemizing their recommended expenditures and appropriations for the upcoming year.
During October, the Town Board also approved a resolution requesting the New York State Department of Transportation to conduct traffic safety studies for evaluation of appropriate speed limits on Clove Road and in the following developments: Strawberry Fields, Castleridge and Maple Crest. I personally have been contacted by numerous residents regarding people speeding through other neighborhoods in our town as well. Schodack Police Chief Joseph Belardo would like to get the message out to residents that the best way to handle these and other traffic-related complaints is to contact our Schodack Police Department and file a report. These reports aid the department with scheduling their daily assignments as well as monitoring the results of their work.
Thank you to the numerous volunteers who worked on the Reformed Dutch Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill annual Turkey Dinner. It was nice to see such a large turnout of residents enjoying a terrific family-style meal. There was a great turnout for the 1st Annual Windy Hill Orchard Apple Festival. Visitors were treated to craft and food vendors, musical entertainment, apple and pumpkin picking, Fort Orange Brewing beers, wine and cider tastings, and wagon rides through the corn maze.

Plateau People at Work: a talk with Soul Fire Farm
Thursday, November 14, 7 pm. Sand Lake Town Hall. “Working toward a just and sustainable food system,” presented by Jonah Vitale-Wolff of Soul Fire Farm, Grafton. Part of Rensselaer Plateau Alliance’s Plateau People at Work Lecture Series. Jonah will talk about how many of our cherished sustainable farming practices today have their roots in African & Indigenous wisdom. Yet, due to discrimination and violence against African-American farmers, they make up less than 2 percent of farmers today. Meanwhile, African-American communities are often cut off from healthy food systems. Soul Fire Farm is committed to ending racism and injustice in our food system, with programs such as the Black-Latinx Farmers Immersion, a sliding-scale farmshare CSA, and Youth Food Justice leadership training. Jonah will discuss how all of us can be part of the movement for food sovereignty and help to build a food system based on justice, dignity, and abundance for all members of our community. $5 suggested donation goes directly to support conservation on the Rensselaer Plateau.

Averill Park High School was selected to represent New York state by creating 24 ornaments to be showcased at the “National Christmas Tree Experience” in Washington, D.C. Students created ornaments using inspiration from the state flower, cities and mountains found across New York. Great job everyone!
The girls and boys cross country teams fared well in the Section II, Class B championships. Logan Barsalow placed second in the girls’ race while Noah Bonesteel finished eighth in the boys’ event. Both qualified for the NYSPHSAA Championships. Way to go Logan and Noah!
Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary fifth grade student, Vivian Savage, has been accepted as a new member of the Capital District Youth Chorale. Vivian and the CDYC will perform with the Albany Symphony Orchestra during its annual winter concert at the Palace Theater. Congratulations Vivian!
