Annual Comic Hypnosis Show at APHS

Averill Park High School’s annual ‘Comic Hypnotist’ will be happening on Wednesday November 13, at 7 pm in the APHS Auditorium, presented by the Class of 2020. The show stars the amazing Michael Ray, and about 20 of our very own Averill Park students randomly chosen from the crowd. Lauren Meyers, a senior who participated in the event last year, swears that the hypnosis effect is real. “I knew what I was doing but at the time it didn’t feel weird. I didn’t think it would work when I went up on the stage… but it did.” Now, we’re posing the question onto you: is hypnosis real? Come find out for yourself at the annual Comic Hypnotist Show! Tickets are $10 at the door, $8 if pre-purchased, and $5 with Algonquin Middle School ID! You don’t want to miss this family friendly, hilarious event!

Tom Ross Selected for NYS Master Teacher Program

Columbia High School science teacher Tom Ross has been selected as a NYS Master Teacher. As part of the program, Mr. Ross will participate in professional development and attend leadership workshops over the next four years.

“It is all about collaborating with other teachers in our region, teachers from different school districts and other disciplines,” Mr. Ross said. “I will be participating in an increased amount of professional development both in STEM and pedagogy, and I’ll be able to share things that I’ve done in my classroom with other teachers.”

Mr. Ross brings as much fun to his physics lessons as possible, whether he has students launching potatoes out of a cannon behind school or dropping pumpkins from the football field bleachers. He builds engaging lessons that get students excited to learn about physics.

“You get to see them grow and change, and teach them about things that matter,” he said.

Mr. Ross serves as chair of the Science Department and is involved with two academic extracurricular activities. He is an advisor with Serious About Science which hosts events at Columbia such as Dinner with a Scientist and V-Healthy Day and he helped create Columbia’s chapter of the Science National Honor Society last year.

Mr. Ross is the fourth Columbia teacher to be selected as a NYS Master Teacher (Diana Prout, Jessica Hladik, Heidi Gleason).
