Legislators deliver funding for flags at Snyder’s Lake

Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop

The volunteers at the Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop work hard to provide a clean, well-organized shopping experience. You will be impressed by the large selection of clothing, jewelry, baby equipment, toys, games, puzzles, record albums, DVDs, CDs, collectibles, household goods,etc. The shop has earned an excellent reputation by offering quality merchandise at bargain prices.

The shop will be open on Thursday, October 31st from 3 to 6 and Saturday, November 2nd from 9 to 2. Located at 1249 Third Street in Rensselaer, the shop is on CDTA bus route #214 and can be entered through the parking lot on the Catherine Street side.

Rensselaer High School Alumni Meeting Nov. 5th

The Rensselaer High Alumni will meet in the LGI room of the high school at 6:30pm on November 5th. All alumni, former and present faculty and staff, and anyone who attended the high school are welcome and encouraged to attend our meetings. We will be discussing the Oct. 24th PTA Trunk and Treat event which the alumni participated in, the electric sign, our annual yearly fundraiser in December, the April Alumni dinner and the September golf tournament. Anyone who would like to help with the golf tournament should attend the meeting or contact Gerry Mullaney at 518-649-0497.

“Bread of Life” Seeking Volunteers

The Poestenkill “Bread of Life” food pantry, 772 Route 351, Poestenkill, NY 12140 is a community program. Anyone from the Poestenkill community is welcome to volunteer on the open dates to pull food requests. This is a physically demanding task and requires lifting food filled boxes and bags.

We are open three time each month, 1st and 3rd Thursday evenings, 5pm to 7pm and the 4th Saturday, 10 am to noon. If you would like to share some of your time and are able to do hard work to help your neighbor, please visit any open date or call 518-283-6045 and leave a name and phone number.

We have a table at the Poestenkill Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning 9 am to noon. Come and see us there for more information. The market is on the front lawn of the Poestenkill Town Hall rain or shine.

To help raise funds, the food pantry is sponsoring a raffle with a chance to receive 1st prize, an October Get-A-Way weekend for two, 2nd prize, dinner for two at Westfall Station and 3rd prize, four movie tickets for the Regal Cinema, Route 4, East Greenbush. Thank you.

Brunswick Cares Food Pantry

We are excited to share that Brunswick Cares Food Pantry has been selected to be a part of the Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag Program, which is designed to make it easy for customers to contribute to their local community while supporting the environment.

For the month of October, each time a $2.50 reusable Fight Hunger Bag is purchased at the Hannaford located at Route 43 & 150, West Sand Lake, $1 will be donated to Brunswick Cares Food Pantry.

AARP Tax Aide Program

AARP Tax Aide Program is looking for volunteers. The Tax Aide Program is a free tax preparation service for all members of our community. There are many opportunities that are available for our volunteers. Tax Preparers work directly with the tax payer to complete their tax return. Client Facilitators welcome taxpayers and help organize their paperwork. Technology Coordinators manage computer equipment. Local Coordinators who manage the site, volunteers and schedules. Communications Coordinators who help recruit new volunteers. We have sites in Columbia and Rensselaer Counties. Volunteers will receive training. To become a volunteer you will need to register for the Tax Aide Program. You can register at NYTaxAide.org. Halloween Party

American Legion Ladies Auxiliary presents Skaryoke Karaoke with Johnny Oooo on Friday 11/1/19. Doors open at 6, DJ music and dancing from 7-11. There will be a costume contest, prizes, 50/50 raffle, and cash bar. Guests are welcome to bring light snacks, no outside beverages will be allowed.

Admission is a $10 donation to support our Veterans and community programs. Limited reserved seating is available with the purchase of 8 tickets. DPS Elementary PTO Brown Bag Auction

Donald P Sutherland Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization is holding its annual brown bag auction on November 16th, 2019. Doors open at 4:30pm, ticket sales end at 5:15 and the auction will begin between 5:30 and 6pm. Thank you to all who contacted us last year with donations. We need your help once again with the donation of items. We are looking for new or gently used items to auction off at our event. Sand Lake Veterans Day Ceremony

This year we will be holding our Veteran’s Day Ceremonies on Monday, November 11th, at 11:00 am to honor our Veterans at The Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park. Our honored speaker will be Captain Michael F. Perry recently retired from the Navy Reserve after 28 years of service. He continues to serve as the Deputy Commander for Logistics of the New York Naval Militia, which is a Federally recognized component of the New York National Guard and comprised of over 2,600 members. His past assignments include five command tours, including major command of a Navy Cargo Handling Battalion comprised of over 275 Sailors spanning five installations and three states. and, most recently, six months as the Chief of the Commercial Industry Branch of the United States Transportation Command from February to July of this year. His State deployments include numerous activations to State Active Duty by the New York Naval Militia in support of the New York National Guard during its response to numerous natural and man-made disasters, including service at Ground Zero during 9-11. Captain Perry has earned Master’s Degrees from SUNY Albany and the United States Army War College, Seabee Combat and Expeditionary Warfare qualifications and numerous personal and unit awards, including the Defense Superior Service Medal as a result of filling a gapped Air Force General Officer billet from 2016 to 2017. He resides with his wife, Nancy, on Miller Hill Road in Averill Park and has two children, Jennifer and Julia.

Repair Cafe

What do you do with a broken lamp? Or a sweater with a hole? Toss it? No way! The Village of Castleton-on-Hudson will hold the next Repair Café on Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Village Hall, 85 South Main Street – downstairs, in the Community Room on the first floor. People visiting the Repair Café bring along their broken but beloved items. Volunteers try their best to make repairs, and it’s free of charge! Featured services in November are electrical, seamstress, and “jack-of-all-trades.” Do you like to fix things and want to volunteer? Wreaths Across America Roast Beef Dinner

Please join us at the American Legion Post 1489, 111 Main Ave. in Wynantskill on Saturday, November 9th for our 3rd annual roast beef dinner to benefit Wreaths Across America. All proceeds will be used to purchase wreaths to be placed on veterans’ graves at Saratoga National Cemetery on Saturday, December 14th.

Dinner will be served 2-6pm, eat in or takeout and includes: roast beef, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll, cake, water and coffee. A cash bar will be available. Kiwanis Announces Free Meals to Honor Veterans

“Town of Sand Lake Comes Together to Honor our Veterans” – On May 11th 1938, President Franklin D Roosevelt declared November 11th to be Armistice Day as a legal holiday dedicated to the cause of World Peace and all those who fought for that Peace. On October 8th, 1954 President Dwight Eisenhower issued an Executive Order for the first Veteran’s Day Proclamation. In that proclamation the President stated “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this Anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations and the entire citizenry will join hands in a common purpose”. On Saturday, November 9th , 2019, the Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake, The American Legion Post and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Averill Park, The Sand Lake Veteran’s Association, the APHS Key Club,, Knights of Columbus and the Cross Roads Restaurants will honor our local veterans by providing a free veteran’s “all you can eat spaghetti dinner”, at the West Sand Lake Fire Hall from 4 PM to 7 PM. The West Sand Lake Fire Hall will be decked out in patriotic colors. Meals will be served by the APCSD Kiwanis Clubs and the Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake. The Cross Roads Restaurant will be providing a delicious sauce cooked to perfection by Kiwanis Club members. A special Fallen Comrade’s Table will honor the brave brothers and sisters who never returned from their call to arms. Please join us November 9th and pay tribute our defenders of freedom as we celebrate Veteran’s Day. The meals will be limited to the first 120 people. There will be a 50/50 Raffle by the American Legion and VFW Posts of Averill Park. Admission will be Free to Sand Lake Veterans – Retired and Active Duty, $10 for adults, $5 for children under 10 and $ 25 for a family of up to- 5 exclusive of the Veteran.

Register Now for 72nd Troy Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Morning

Registration is open for the 72nd edition of the Troy Turkey Trot, the nation’s 12th and world’s 64th oldest road race, on Thanksgiving morning at TroyTurkeyTrot.com.

Troy’s signature Thanksgiving holiday event, presented by Pioneer Bank, begins at 8 a.m. with the Capital Region’s only Thanksgiving Day 10K. The 10K course will close at 9:30 a.m. to facilitate the start of the Grade School Mile and Turkey Walk at 9:30 a.m. The shorter 5K distance kicks off at 10 a.m. Both the 10K and 5K feature “out and back” course configurations which start at 4th and Fulton Streets and finish at River Street’s Monument Square.

Registration is $35 (5K and 10K) and $15 (Grade School Mile and Turkey Walk). In-person registration along with bib and t-shirt pickup will be held at the Troy Atrium (4 Third Street) Sunday, Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Weds., Nov. 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Day-of-event registration for all events will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 15 minutes prior to the start of each event on the second floor of the Troy Atrium. Race day entry fees are $45 (5K and 10K) and $15 (Grade School Mile and Turkey Walk). Participants for all events will receive a 72nd edition blended dry-fit t-shirt, finisher’s medal, personalized finisher’s certificate and post-event refreshments.

While registering online, all participants are encouraged to donate to the event’s two main charities, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and Joseph’s House & Shelter, a Troy-based not-for-profit whose mission is to prevent and alleviate homelessness in the Capital Region.

All participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to local food pantries and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. These items can be dropped off at the Troy Atrium (second floor) on Sunday, Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and race morning (first floor) starting at 6:30 a.m.
