‘Distraction’ burglary being investigated

NORTH GREENBUSH — Police are investigating after two homeowners were victims of “distraction” burglaries Tuesday.

In both cases, three men went to homes on Douglas Street and Winter Street Extension and told the homeowners they were from the water department, North Greenbush Chief David Keevern said.

The suspects told the homeowners there was a broken pipe that could be affecting the home. Two suspects distracted the homeowner while a third searched through closets and dressers. Homeowners became suspicious and told the suspects to leave before anything was stolen.

These burglaries are not uncommon, Keevern said.

“If someone is legitimately at your house for a utility emergency or problem, they will have no problem providing credentials which can be verified through the company they claim to be from,” he said.
