Evening at the Earl Fundraiser at Oakwood Oct. 3

The 18th Annual Evening at the Earl fundraiser will be held on Thursday October 3rd from 5:00 – 8:00pm at the magnificent Gardner Earl Chapel at Oakwood Cemetery. There will be catered food and drinks and fun for all. You can bid on exciting Silent Auction baskets with themes like Chocolate, Pets, Wine, Beginning Your Family Tree, Relaxation and more. We will honor several 2019 Individuals of Excellence who have all had an impact on Troy. They include: Kevin Mullen of Rare Form Brewing Company, Kathleen Tesnakis, founder of Ekologic, Tom Nardacci of Troy Innovation Garage, John Hughes owner of the Gardner Farm Inn B & B, Cory Nelson of Troy Kitchen, and Chun Hee Kim and Sun Hwa Choi, founders of Sun Hee’s Farm and Kitchen. Each will have a 19th C counterpart that will be recognized in celebrating Troy’s Entrepreneurial Spirit, Then and Now.

Defensive Driving Class at Gilead Lutheran Church, Brunswick on October 5

Gilead Lutheran Church will host a 6 hour defensive driving class on Saturday, October 5, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This is a NYS DMV approved class that will offer a 10% reduction off your auto insurance and up to 4 points off your NYS driver’s license! Exciting and interactive PowerPoint presentation and never a test to pass the course!

Cost of this class is just $30 per person and must be paid at the door. Doors open at 8:30 AM. Lunch items will be available for sale for an additional cost.

Our Crafting group thanks the couple who donated yarn, hooks, and needles to us. We meet on Wednesday at 10:00. In the 1700’s, the loom we are using was called a Knitting Jennie. If you made potholders on a loom, you can make hats, scarves, and sweaters on a Knitting Jennie.

This Wednesday’s Bible Study is entitled “Living Water.” We travel to the oasis of En Gedi in the Judean Wilderness. Come at 5:30 to share pizza. Bible Study begins at 6:00

Honor A Vet ceremony

On October 8th, the Town of East Greenbush will be saying thank you for their service, three veterans at the East Greenbush Honor A Veteran Ceremony held at 10:00am in the East Greenbush Town Hall. The three veterans are: David Neal Caneen, United States Army, Arthur Harold Summers, United States Navy (deceased) and Selby Edward Summers, United States Air Corps. (deceased). The First Reformed Church of Wynantskill will resume in October, their free community dinners each Wednesday evening at the church. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Poestenkill, 772 Route 351, Poestenill, NY 12140 will hold our Chicken Bar-B-Q, Drive thru, Take Out Only, on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Steps2Cure NF

The 6th Annual “Steps2Cure NF” Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the South Pavilion in The Crossings of Colonie. Registration begins at 11AM, and the walk/run kicks off at noon!

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in or on the body at any time. NF affects three times as many people as cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy combined, yet it is not commonly known. There is NO means of prevention, NO effective treatment, and NO CURE. Scientists have determined that NF research has broad implications for millions of Americans who are affected by hearing loss, visual impairment, cancer, brain tumors, seizures and learning disabilities — all of which can be symptomatic of NF.

Board members from Neurofibromatosis Northeast, Inc. and medical professionals from Albany Medical Center will be available at the event to answer questions and give insight into the illness and any progress being made by research toward a cure.

Please come out and help us keep hope alive for the 1.5 million people faced with Neurofibromatosis! The Ilium Literary Club of Troy, NY will begin its 97th year on October 4, 2019. The Club meets 6 times a year (October, November, December 2019, April, May & June 2020). Swing Music In The Capital District 1935-1945

The Greenbush Historical Society invites you to “Swing Music in the Capital District 1935-1945” to be held on Sunday, October 6, 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library.

Michael Catoggio and Bill Schilling will share the story of the swing time scene in the greater Albany area. Learn about the top local bands and the variety of venues in which they played. It is a colorful and rich look into a lost corner of our local history. This presentation will be packed with unique photos and images. The program is free and open to the public. Ben Franklin to visit Stephentown Historical Society

Spend an evening with Ben Franklin, also known as reenactor Paul Stillman, on Monday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. He will be visiting the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road, Stephentown, New York. The program is free. For directions, telephone (518) 733-0010.

Ben’s early life, part of a large family, was in Boston. He left school at a young age and was apprenticed in his brother’s print shop. Because of harsh treatment, Ben ran away to Philadelphia, eventually married, and started his own print shop. He was interested in inventing and science: remember his experiment with the kite during a thunderstorm? He invented a glass musical instrument and bifocals. This self-educated man spoke many languages and received honorary university degrees. Ben will tell about his role in the writing of the Declaration of Independence.

Paul Stillman has been performing his first-person, historical programs throughout the Northeast for over 32 years.

Bells, Bells, Bells: An Enduring Legacy from the Greater Troy Area

Tuesday, October 8, 7:00 p.m.: Michael Barrett, Executive Director of the Hudson-Mohawk Industrial Gateway and the Burden Iron Works Museum in Troy, will present Bells, Bells, Bells: An Enduring Legacy from the Greater Troy Area, 1808-1952.

Four of the largest bell manufacturing concerns in the US were clustered in Troy and West Troy (now Watervliet.) Between them, they created an estimated 100,000 bells, including several of our nation’s most famous.

It all happens at the monthly meeting of the Sand Lake Historical at the Sand Lake Town Hall, 8428 NY 66, Averill Park. Please use the Court Entrance.

The Book Nook at Transfiguration Parish on Hiillview Drive in Speigletown will be open on Saturday, October 5 and 19 from 9:00 am until noon. Fall Festival at Parker School on Oct. 5

Celebrate autumn at Robert C. Parker School’s Fall Festival, Saturday Oct. 5th from 11AM – 2PM. Preschool through middle school students will enjoy games, crafts, educational projects, live music, and homemade food, all outdoors on our beautiful 77-acre campus.

Come for the bounce house, face painting, carnival games and prizes, and our unique toy swap lottery! Kids can also do STEM projects with RPI’s Society for Women Engineers and hands-on nature activities with educators from Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. There will be activities especially for the little ones, with big kids on hand to provide storytime for their younger buddies. Enjoy fiddle and guitar music by Tunefolk, sponsored by a grant from the DanceFlurry Organization.

Community Block Party

The Immaculate Conception Church, are pleased to invite public to a Community Block Party on Saturday, October 5, 2019.

Watervliet Senior Center Craft Fair 10/5

Saturday October 5, 9-3pm. Join us for a fall craft/vendor fair, with home goods, food, beauty and accessory vendors and handmade gifts. The Watervliet Library will also be doing adult and kid activities and crafts.

Its free to attend, and there will be a basket raffle, 50/50 drawing, and a concession with chili and cider donuts.

Hoosick Falls’ Annual Walter A. Wood Tractor Show is Back on October 5th!

The Walter A. Wood Tractor and Agriculture Show is coming Saturday, October 5th! Come on over to Walter A. Wood Memorial Park in Hoosick Falls and check out all the antique and vintage tractors, horse-drawn farm equipment and implements, and contemporary machinery that will be on display from 8:30 am to 3 pm.

The Walter A. Wood Reaping and Mowing Company manufactured horse-drawn farm equipment right here in our village from 1865 to 1924, and sold machinery to farmers in Hoosick and as far away as the Middle East and Russia!

Come get a good, close-up look at antique tractors and antique horse drawn implements made by the Wood Company and others, as well as hit-and-miss steam engines, some of which will actually be working.

The highlight of the day at 12:00 Noon is the Burton Luke Tractor Parade.

The American Legion will be offering hamburgers, hotdogs and steamers. Lewis Sugar House and the Sugar Shack will be selling everything maple and new this year an apple pie contest!

Enjoy hayrides courtesy of JC Tractor of Hoosick Falls with a tour of the downtown areas.

A free concert by one of the region’s favorite blue grass-folk bands, The Hill Hollow Band, will be at the Bandstand from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Pumpkins, gourds and hay stalks along with other farm products. Sample dairy products made from milk produced by Hoosick Area farmers.

Folks from Hoosick and the surrounding communities are welcome to enter tractors, farm implements, hit and miss engines, livestock, and agricultural products.

The volunteers at the Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop work hard to provide a clean, well-organized shopping experience. The shop has a very large selection of clothing for all sizes and ages, gently-used baby equipment, toys, games, jewelry, household goods, Halloween costumes and décor. Protecting Your Legacy: Planning for the Future of Your Land

Few challenges faced by landowners are more important than the issue of passing land on to the next generation. Many landowners want to conserve their woods but don’t know about conservation options and how to involve family members in future plans. The workshop will help landowners by connecting them with legacy planning resources to help them consider the future of their forests. Experts from Cornell University will share resources to help landowners make decisions regarding the future of their property. An attorney will present on the legal aspects of estate planning tools, and a panel of landowners will discuss their conservation challenges and decisions.

Professionals who work with landowners in areas relating to estate planning are also encouraged to attend this event.

Registration for this workshop is required. $25 per person covers handouts, resource materials, light morning refreshments and lunch.

ACPHS Students to Host 10/5 Albany Community Health Day at Bishop Maginn High School

Capital Region families looking for free healthcare services, family-fun activities, raffles and giveaways are invited to attend Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences’ (ACPHS) Albany Community Health Day on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Bishop Maginn High School (75 Park Avenue, Albany, N.Y. 12204) from noon to 4 p.m.

Organized by more 120 students from the College, the annual event will feature flu shots, screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure and bone density, cardiovascular counseling, and treatment options for kidney failure. There will also be activities, services and resources focused on early childhood education, assistance with health insurance enrollment, career services, mental health resources and aging.

“The purpose of Health Day is to give back to the local community,” said ACPHS President Dr. Greg Dewey. “The event enables our students to share their knowledge, while providing an array of services to educate and promote healthier habits among local residents.”

With winter fast approaching, attendees will be able to discover strategies to stay healthy during the upcoming flu season. They can also talk with student pharmacists about nutrition; HIV and hepatitis C; hydration; generic vs. brand medication; Medicare Part D; medication; music and health; poison prevention; and learn tips for reducing the risk of skin damage and skin cancer.

Kids will also have plenty to do throughout the afternoon. They can join their parents in Zumba and fitness demonstrations, run tennis drills with instructors from the 15-LOVE youth tennis program, try their hand at arts and crafts, or have their face painted as their favorite superhero, animal, or sparkly princess!

“This is a great opportunity to take advantage of free health and wellness screenings, interact with your neighbors and have some fun while doing something good for yourself,” added Dewey.

The regular meeting for the Sand Lake Senior Club will be on October 10, 2019 at The Church of The Covenant in Averill Park on Route 43 at 12:00. The Riders Mills Historical Association is proud to present “Ice Harvesting and Semi-Pro Baseball” on October 5th at 1 PM, located on Riders Mills Road at the corner of Drowne Road in Old Chatham, NY. Howard Blue will share some surprising insights discovered in an attic about local history.

Howard Blue is the Copake Grange Historian, the author of Words at War (Scarecrow Press – about US radio’s role in the WWII effort). He publishes the Copake History Facebook page & occasionally writes for the Columbia Paper.

The Great War: New York Answers the Call

The Riders Mills Historical Association is proud to present “The Great War: New York Answers the Call, on September 28th at 1 PM at the Riders Mills Schoolhouse located on Riders Mills Road at the corner of Drowne Road in Old Chatham, NY Stuart Lehman will discuss the participation of New York State in World War I, with an emphasis on Upstate New York. Some of the Military Units from NYS including the 27th Division, the 77th Division, the 165th Regiment and the 369th Regiment will also be explored with an emphasis on the war’s effect on the home front. Also, there will also be a story of one soldier from Nassau who lost his life in France. Mr. Lehman will be dressed in a WWI uniform accompanied by various artifacts from that time period.

Stuart W. Lehman works as an Assistant Curator with the New York State Office of General Services. He develops tours and programs related to the New York State Capitol and researches the history of the Capitol Building. Previously he worked with the New York State Bureau of Historic Sites at Senate House, Herkimer Home, and Schuyler Mansion. On weekends he participates in Revolutionary War re-enactments as a Colonial Doctor. He lives in Guilderland New York

Circle Theatre Players has chosen a great line up of plays for this new 2019-2020 season. Starting off with Church and State, written by Jason Odell Williams and directed by Patrick White, October 4 – 13, 2019. Followed by Laughter on the 23rd Floor, written by Neil Simon and directed by Melanie Douglas, December 6 -15, 2019. The mid-winter play is All My Sons written by Arthur Miller, directed by Barry Streifert, March 6 – 15 2020, and to finish off the season we present the comedy Leading Ladies written by Ken Ludwig and directed by Cheryl Charbonneau, June 5 – 14, 2020.
