Annual Library Election and Budget Vote on September 5

East Greenbush — East Greenbush Community Library Annual District election will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2018 from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. at the library. The Board has adopted a proposed budget to maintain library services with additional funds from the Friends and the library fund balance to minimize the impact on the East Greenbush taxpayer. The total proposed budget is $2,136,548, which is 1.5% increase and under the NYS Property Tax Cap. The total taxable value has increased approximately 2.9%. This will result in taxes staying relatively flat. The proposed levy from East Greenbush this year is $1,721,454. The estimated cost will be $0.91 per assessed $1,000 of property, which is the same as 2019. Cost to the taxpayer with a house assessed at $200,000 would be approximately $182. The fund balance has moneys saved from 2018 and past years. The 2020 budget seeks to maintain our library’s standards while we await relief from our Bond payment. Non-tax subsidies include a fund balance transfer ($23,481) and a gift from the Friends for materials ($15,000). In 2021, the library Bond will be paid-off (approx. $285,000 yearly).

Copies of the budget are available on East Greenbush Community Library’s website, www.eastgreenbushlibrary.org and www.eastgreenbushlibrary.org/about/board.

A second proposal on the ballot is the election of one position on the Library’s Board of Trustees for a five-year term, beginning January 1, 2020. Petitions for candidacy were accepted until 8/6/2019. The candidates are Camille G. Engel and Marianne Harris. Full biographies are available at https://eastgreenbushlibrary.org/about/board/

The election is held at the Library, located at 10 Community Way. The phone number is 18-477-7476. Any voter registered to vote in East Greenbush general elections may vote in the library election.

Calling all Cyclists for the 21st Annual AIDS “Ride for Life” September 7th

The Ride fills diverse gaps in funding for some much needed programs such as HIV prevention & education and those helping to fight the alarming opioid crisis

Ithaca, NY – The 21st Annual “AIDS Ride for Life” is the Southern Tier AIDS Program’s largest fundraiser, attracting 400+ riders from 20+ states in the USA, Canada and other countries. Charcoal Making in Taborton is topic for Stephentown Historical Society on Sept. 9, 2019

Loren Dobert and Frank Kehn will present their video “Making Charcoal in Taborton” on Monday, September 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting. The event will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road, Stephentown, New York. The program is free. For directions, telephone (518) 733-0010.

Dobert is a master collier and teacher who made his family’s living by producing charcoal and firewood. Kehn is a junior collier and Dobert’s student. They will show how charcoal is produced from native hardwood in a carefully controlled burn in a “pit,” a mud-covered mound.

The making of charcoal was once a major industry in the mountain districts of Sand Lake, Poestenkill, Taborton, Berlin and Stephentown. Charcoal burning in Rensselaer County began prior to the Civil War, and was at its height during and after the conflict. The Dobert family was involved in the making of charcoal for generations going back to the 1800s.
