On Thursday August 15th at 6:00pm the Friends of Oakwood will present their next Full Moon Twilight Tour. Led by Oakwood volunteer Heidi Klinowski, we will look inside the opulent Gardner Earl Chapel, to take advantage of the western sunlight streaming through the vibrant stained glass windows.
Then we will walk to the monuments of some of Oakwood’s interesting ‘residents’, where we’ll hear their stories. Uncle Sam’s grave and the panoramic overlook at sunset are included highlights of this walking tour. And of course we’ll hope for clear views of the full moon.
On Saturday August 17th at 9am Oakwood presents a NEW tour, Millers, Merchants and Collar Makers. Troy and Rensselaer County Historian Kathy Sheehan will lead us on a walking tour to the gravesites of some of the workers of Troy’s 19th and early 20th C. She will tell us about their jobs and the kinds of contributions they made to our area. Hannah Lord Montague is sure to be included. Do you know why?
Tuesday August 20th at 6pm is the date for Oakwood’s popular FAMILY SCAVENGER HUNT. Just $10. per Family, payable on arrival. We will search a new area this year with clues for readers and non-readers. Prizes go to all children who complete the hunt. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the chapel flagpole and we will caravan to the hunt site. In case of rain, we will call if your reservation includes your phone number.
Red Cross Babysitting Certification Course At The Nassau Free Library
Sat. 8/17 8:30am-4pm. This full day certification course for ages 11-18 includes training from Red Cross experts with in-depth coverage of first aid topics and preparation for babysitting. $40/per person in cash must be presented to the library in order to register and secure a spot for the program. Disaster Mental Health Psychological First Aid
Everyone reacts differently to trauma. Emotional distress is not always as visible as physical injury, but it is just as painful and debilitating. After a disaster or traumatic event, the earlier you can assist someone in gaining a sense of calm and meeting their immediate needs, the better they can cope throughout their state of crisis. Join us at the Troy Public Library on Monday, August 19th at 5:00 pm for this Psychological First Aid training workshop that will give you the tools to make this possible.
Avoiding long term struggles such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or unhealthy coping skills such as substance abuse, is the goal of this training. Recognizing when other people – caregivers, first responders or even ourselves may need a little extra help is also part of the discussion. This method does not require a professional to carry out the steps of care. The process can be learned and employed by anyone who can make direct contact with individuals affected by crisis. A resilient community is a healthy community! All participants will receive a certificate of completion. (This is a 2.5 hour training including hands on activities, video demonstrations and interactive scenarios with role play). Nassau Synagogue Hosts Historical Presentation about Adirondack Jews
Nassau, NY – The Nassau Synagogue and Jewish Community Center will present a free program at the synagogue called “Adirondack Jews – Community and Contribution” at 7PM on Monday, August 19 at 12 Albany Avenue (Route 20), Nassau, NY, 12123.
The program focuses on Jewish migration into the Adirondacks, Jews who lived in the Adirondacks and had an impact, Jewish summer camps, private resorts and golf clubs and some humorous and poignant anecdotes.
The featured speaker is Diane O’Connor, Managing Director, Ticonderoga Historical Society. “The Adirondacks is rich with accomplishments and contributions by individuals of Jewish heritage,” said Diane. “Louis Marshall, an attorney and conservationist, helped draft the ‘Forever Wild’ clause for the protection of the Adirondacks, and his son Bob Marshall was a founder of the Adirondack 46ers and the Wilderness Society”.

Commemoration to be Held at Bennington Battlefield
HOOSICK, NY – The Friends of the Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site and New York State Parks will host a commemoration marking the 242nd anniversary of the Battle of Bennington on Friday, August 16th at 7:00 PM. Representatives from the 2nd Continental Artillery Regiment, the Battle Monument in Vermont, as well as SAR and DAR chapters will help to mark the occasion. Historical accounts will be shared before a wreath laying and artillery salute. Local students will also participate in the ceremony. Beginning at 5:00 PM, visitors may tour the students’ encampment on the hilltop.
The site is located on Route 67 in Hoosick, New York. The program is free and open to the public. Information on how to become a member of the Friends organization will be available to visitors.
Other events will take place over Battle Weekend. Historian Eric Schnitzer will deliver a presentation on his new book created in collaboration with an historical artist, Don Troiani’s Campaign to Saratoga – 1777 on August 17th at 11:00 AM. The talk will take place in the Caretakers House (located at 30 Caretakers Road in Hoosick, NY). On August 18th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM tours of the battlefield will be offered to the public on the hour. Groups will meet under the flagpole.
The Battle of Bennington was a pivotal battle of the Revolutionary War resulting in an American victory. It provided a much-needed boost to patriot morale and inflicted severe losses on General Burgoyne’s army before the Battles of Saratoga, ultimately leading to the failure of the 1777 British invasion of New York and eventual independence.

Everybody WINS! Power Lunch Volunteers Are Needed for the 2019-2020 School Year
Everybody Wins! Power Lunch is an innovative reading and mentoring program that improves children’s prospects for success in school and in life. Once a week, Power Lunch pairs elementary school children with adult reading mentors who book aloud to a child while he/she eats lunch. The Everybody WINS! Power Lunch program is in need of volunteer reading mentors at various schools in Troy and Albany for the 2019-2020 school year. A volunteer School Coordinator is needed for the program at Abram Lansing in Cohoes on Fridays and for the program at Arbor Hill School in Albany on Thursdays. The volunteer School Coordinator supervises the sessions at the school, selects books for the reading mentor and child, and makes sure the sessions run smoothly (approximately 2.5-3 hours per week).

Veterans To Exhibit Award-Winning Vietnam War Photos During Celebrate Stephentown
On Saturday, August 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Veterans of Stephentown will present an exclusive exhibit of images taken during the Battle of Hue in 1968 by former U.S, Army combat photographer John Olson, who currently lives in Chatham. Young Men At War: Remembering the Tet Offensive will feature a transformative collection of 20 large-format prints, taken directly from the groundbreaking 50th anniversary exhibit, The Marines And Tet, which recently ran for 15 months at The Newseum in Washington, D.C. Presented here in the setting of Stephentown Veterans Memorial Park, these award-winning images will be displayed outdoors next to the monuments honoring those who risked their lives in the United States Armed Forces. “These photographs are very impactful,” explains Dennis Burek, the event’s organizer. “They’re a poignant reminder of what the young men and women from Stephentown and across this country experienced 50 years ago during their service in Vietnam and they make me appreciate that service and sacrifice even more. We believe our Memorial Park is a perfect setting to remember, reflect on and cognize the reality of war.” Admission is free with donations accepted. Bennington Battlefield Announces Upcoming Events

Eleganz on Elm
The highlight of Nassau’s Bicentennial year will be Eleganz on Elm, scheduled for Saturday, August 17 between the hours of 3 – 7 pm. Taking place on the lawns of three adjacent historic properties on Elm Street, the porches of each home will provide the setting for three musical groups – “Swing Shift,” “Red Dirt Highway” and “Hillbilly Boxcar.” All performing acoustically with a diverse selection of jazz, big band, folk, bluegrass and blues styles, the public is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the entertainment on the shady lawns of 18, 20 and 22 Elm Street.
A menu of world flavor street foods will be available and include grilled shrimp in a stick, Mediterranean falafel, fresh beet salad with goat cheese and grilled sweet corn with a selection of sauces. The concert will be held under the church’s Postoian Pavilion, rain or shine, on Saturday, August 17, starting at 6:30pm. Town of Nassau Family Fun Day
The Youth Committee of the Town of Nassau is holding a Family Fun Day on August 17th from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Chandler Young Veteran’s Association, 7 Lyons Lake Road, Nassau, NY. The Lazy 8 RC Airplane Club of Johnstown will be hosting its 33rd Annual Charity Air Show on Saturday and Sunday August 17 and 18 from 9 to 4. Spectator donation of $5 will go to Warm the Children Program. Show features radio control planes, aerobatic demonstrations, vintage aircraft, helicopters, civilian models and more. Announces Their 14th Annual Swap Meet at the Historic Mabee Farm in Rotterdam Junction, NY on Saturday August 17, 2019
Scotia, NY – Current President Michael Glenn announces that the 14th Annual Swap and Formal Meet of the Chapter will be held again this year at the Historic Mabee Farm. The event is planned for August 17, 2017 and will be held on the grounds of the Mabee Farm on Route 5S in Rotterdam Junction, New York. Attendees come from throughout the Northeast as well as local members and the general public is welcome to attend at no cost. There is no admission fee and no fee to display/buy/sell/trade.
The day is planned to begin at 9:00 AM as a casual open air event that is expected to last until 2:00 pm. The event includes the buying, selling and trading of antique and classic outboard motors, boats and related items from attendees/vendors. Additional vendors are welcome at no cost. The general public is welcome. There will be food available for a donation for morning coffee and donuts and lunch at noontime.
The swap meet is held in an Antiques Roadshow type atmosphere and interested parties can get parts, advice and resources for their old outboard motors and boats, as well as an outlet to bring their motors to put them in the hands of a collector who can restore it. There will be judging of motors in several categories.
The Chapter, organized in March of 2005 has experienced growth over the last 14 years.

Kinderhook Creek Farm is an 1150+ acre field crop and vegetable farm that has been owned and operated by the Eckhardt’s since 1959. Once parked, a hay wagon ride will take you through some of the fields at Kinderhook Creek Farm. Through interactive demonstrations you will learn about the different crops (such as hay, grain, sweet corn, and the many vegetables) grown on this farm. You will also see how their farm products get to market and eventually to your family’s table. Also, be sure to visit exhibits set up by local organizations & businesses, experience the equipment used on the farm by the farmers and see the 4-H Club sponsored petting zoo. Food, corn on the cob, ice cold watermelon and other farm fresh foods will be available to purchase for your enjoyment. Admission and parking for this event is free and open to the public. Supervisor Desso Announces 2019 North Greenbush Concert Series
The Town of North Greenbush in conjunction with the Youth Makes a Difference committee is proud to announce their 2019 summer concert series. The concerts will be held on Sunday evenings 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Gazebo behind town hall.
“We are very excited to provide this free family entertainment to our residents at no expense to the North Greenbush taxpayers. This would not be possible without the generosity from all of our sponsors and the volunteers from our YMAD committee,” said Supervisor Desso.

North Greenbush Council Update
This month, the town board recognized the achievements of Coach Owen Devine and the Twin Town Little League All Star 12A team. This team was the first in Twin Town history to make it to the NYS Tournament and all the way to the Championship game. Great work!
The town board unanimously passed a local law I proposed that requires car wash operators to use recycled water as a condition of site plan approval. The town board postponed until September discussion of a proposed local law I introduced that would require certain approvals and permits before commercial timbering may occur on a parcel. Our planning board strongly requested this legislation which is similar to laws already adopted by Brunswick, Schodack and Clifton Park. The postponement will give the board the time to review comments and concerns raised by the town engineer.
Last month I reported on significant flooding and road damage to North Road and overflow flooding on Buckbee Road due to inadequate stormwater management at a large new residential project on North Rd. A month later. a nearly identical situation developed and again, residents of both North and Buckbee addressed the town board with their concerns. The town engineer, building department head and highway superintendent will be meeting shortly with the developer to discuss these ongoing stormwater problems. The developer will be constructing additional catch basins to help address this problem. I pledge to work with the residents to ensure the roads do not flood every time there is a heavy rain.
The last Sunday concert, Whiskey Highway, is coming up on August 18 at 6:00 at town hall. And stay tuned for the annual town fair which will take place September 6 through 8 on the grounds of town hall.

2019 Town of Brunswick Spring/Summer Pick-Up Schedule
What can be picked up:
Please no sticks, dirt or rocks or any material other than leaves and grass should be placed in bags we do not use leaf vacuums in the spring. Limbs must be piled neatly, 8’ long-no larger than 6” diameter avoid piling brush near utility poles and under trees, wires, or out in the street. We do not go on private property. Clean wood only we will also pick up other yard waste, such as grass clippings, provided biodegradable paper bags are used. Branches must be free of roots and dirt. We do not pick up rocks, stumps, rubbish, etc. Please do not put these items out with your branches. Please no clear cutting of lots. No commercial pickups. Residents are also encouraged to dispose of leaves and grass at our recycling center, it is located across from the town garage. Please check with recycling department prior to drop off and deposit brush in designated place and leaves and grass in designated place. Items must be at roadside on the first day of scheduled pickup.
Monthly brush and yard waste pick-up schedule will be the following dates. Items to be out by first day in front of your residence only.

Ken Morgan Memorial Clove Run
The Ken Morgan Memorial Clove Run, hosted by the Castleton Road Racing Commission and Castleton Kiwanis,” will be held this year on August 17, 2019. There will be two races, a 5k walk/race and a 10 mile challenging course. Both courses are USATF certified. There will also be a 1 mile family fun run. Awards will be presented at the finish line, along with refreshments provided by local businesses. Registration packets can be picked up that day starting at 7am at the Castleton Elementary School.
