Wild Women Of Oakwood: North of the Ponds

Saturday August 10th at 9am the Friends of Oakwood presents a tour in a new area of the cemetery. Troy City and Rensselaer County Historian Kathy Sheehan will lead us to the grave-sites of some of the women who were the movers and shakers of our county history. These women were a force to contend with – suffragists, philanthropists and more.

On Thursday August 15th at 6:00pm the Friends of Oakwood will present their next Full Moon Twilight Tour. Led by Oakwood volunteer Heidi Klinowski, we will look inside the opulent Gardner Earl Chapel, to take advantage of the western sunlight streaming through the vibrant stained glass windows.

Then we will walk to the monuments of some of Oakwood’s interesting ‘residents’, where we’ll hear their stories.  Uncle Sam’s grave and the panoramic overlook at sunset are included highlights of this walking tour. And of course we’ll hope for clear views of the full moon.

Comets and Critters

The North Chatham Library welcomes the STARLAB Planetarium and Animal Embassy to their Summer Program! On August 8 we have the STARLAB miSci Planetarium coming to the Tri-Village Fire Company, Station # 1 on 111 Co Rd 13. They’ll be doing five shows from 10 am to 2:30 pm; Seasonal Stargazers, Native American Constellations, Calendar Constellations, Star Clock, and Reasons for the Seasons. The NFCL will soon be a menagerie too! On August 13 we’ll have an Over-the-Moon Animal Adventure at 2 pm. The program will specialize on nocturnal animals, so come interact with night critters of all shapes and sizes! Sand Lake Baptist VBS

Calling all families with children ages 4-12….come on a unique and fun Western adventure at Sand Lake Baptist Church’s Vacation Bible School!

Northern Tier Picnic

Rensselaer County’s Hoosick Falls Senior Center and Everett Wagar Senior Center members will host the Northern Tier Picnic on August 8, 2019 at the St. Stanislaw Polish Hall Pavilion at 12 Mechanic Street, Hoosick Falls. This covered dish event is open to all Rensselaer County residents 60 and older. Thank you to our sponsors – CDPHP, BSNENY, MVP and Fidelis for making this event possible, and to local businesses that made a donation for prizes. We will have bingo and games, live music entertainment by Bob Treffiletti, and door prizes. Please bring a covered dish to share. This is an event you won’t want to miss. Free Community Meal

Hopes Kitchen will provide a free summertime community meal.  Serving will begin at 3:30 on Thursday August 8th, and end at 6:30.  Your choice of summertime sandwiches and sides.  There will be refreshing drinks, and delicious desserts.

Open to everyone in the community.  Hopes Kitchen is located at the Rensselaer Presbyterian church at 34 Broadway, Rensselaer.  Look for our sidewalk sign directing you to the entrance.  Plan now to join us for good food, fellowship, and music.

“All You Can Eat” Fundraiser

Second Saturday Of Each Month

The Sand Lake Kiwanis Club wants to invite all to participate in a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on Saturday August 10th from 4PM to 7PM at the West Sand Lake Fire House on Rt. 43. All you can eat – $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 5 to 10 years old, kids under 5 are free. Meals will consist of spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert & beverages. Repair Café

What do you do with a broken lamp? Or a sweater with a hole? Toss it? No way! The Village of Castleton-on-Hudson will hold the next Repair Café on Friday, August 9, 2019 from 4:30 to 7:30 PM at the Castleton-on-Hudson Farmers and Artisans Market (COHFAM), on the corner of Scott Avenue (150) and Main Street (9J). If COHFAM is canceled due to rain, Repair Café will be held 8/9, same hours at the Village Hall instead. People visiting the Repair Café bring along their broken but beloved items. Volunteers try their best to make repairs, and it’s free of charge! Featured services in August are electrical, welding, seamstress, and “jack-of-all-trades.” Do you like to fix things and want to volunteer? The Half Moon Button Club

The Half Moon Button Club will meet on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at the Bethlehem Public Library, 451 Delaware Avenue, Delmar 12054.  The social time starts at 11:00 a.m. and the business meeting starts at 12:00 noon followed by the program, which will be presented by Kirsti Gariepy on creating polymer clay buttons.

Nassau Village Historian hosting local history presentations

Nassau Village Historian Kurt Vincent will be hosting three “encore performances” of local history presentations at The Nassau Free Library in July and August. Beat the heat in the cool Community Room as the illustrated slideshow “Nassau at 200” traces this history and development of Nassau Village and the surrounding areas in our bicentennial year. Originally presented in March for the Esquatak Historical Society, the Library shows will take place on Tuesday, August 13, both at 6:30 pm. All presentations are free. The Library is located at 18 Church Street (US Route 20) in Nassau Village.

Late Summer Is For Lawns

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will present the program “Late Summer Is For Lawns” on Tuesday, August 13, from 7 to 8 PM.  Mid-August to mid-September is the best time to tackle lawn weed management, overseeding, fertilizing, and renovation.  Bring samples of problems, such as weeds and insects, and we’ll discuss options to improve your lawn for the future.  Hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension Educator David Chinery.

This program is FREE to the public and will be held outdoors at the Demonstration Garden at the Robert C. Parker School, 4254 Route 43, North Greenbush. Mini-Market and Chicken BBQ

The Reformed Dutch Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill will be holding its annual Mini-Market and Chicken BBQ on Saturday, August 10th. The church is located at the intersection of Muitzeskill Rd. and Schodack Landing Rd., in the town of

Schodack Landing. The Mini-Market opens at 9:00 A.M., while the BBQ will be served from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.

Supervisor Desso Announces 2019 North Greenbush Concert Series

The Town of North Greenbush in conjunction with the Youth Makes a Difference committee is proud to announce their 2019 summer concert series. The concerts will be held on Sunday evenings 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Gazebo behind town hall.

“We are very excited to provide this free family entertainment to our residents at no expense to the North Greenbush taxpayers. This would not be possible without the generosity from all of our sponsors and the volunteers from our YMAD committee,” said Supervisor Desso.

Rensselaer Youth Outdoors Forest Conservation Corps Teen Sumer Program

Rensselaer County, NY: Rensselaer Youth Outdoors is announcing an environmental education summer program for teenagers, aged 14-16. The program will combine recreation and education experiences while teens work on valuable conservation projects protecting Rensselaer county’s parks, waters and natural resources.

The four-week program will run weekdays from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, July 22 to August 16, with space for 10 teens each week.

Locations:

Week 3: August 5-August 9 – Poestenkill Community Forest

Week 4: August 12-August 16 – Albert Family Community Forest

Participants who complete a full week of the program will receive a certificate and a $100 stipend at the end of the week.

Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Rd, Grafton, will host Jillian Ludwig, Community Nutrition Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension for our monthly Eat Smart – Live Strong cooking demonstration on Wednesday, Aug 14th at 11:00 am. Register for the 34th Annual Run for the Roses 5K Race in Grafton

Registration is open for the 34th Annual Run for the Roses 5K Foot Race on Sunday, August 11 at Grafton Lakes State Park. The event benefits Grafton Community Library, and includes a 2.5 Mile Nature Walk and Kids’ 1 Mile Fun Run in addition to the USATF sanctioned 5K race.
