4-H Members Attend Wonders of Washington Conference

Two 4-H members from the CCE Rensselaer County 4-H Youth Development Program recently participated in the 2019 4-H Wonders of Washington Conference in Washington D.C.

Rensselaer County 4-H members Amanda Thrasher of Troy and Will Smith, also of Troy joined other 4-H members from the Capital District for the weeklong conference. The delegation stayed at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD. During the conference the youth participated in a variety of workshops about the federal government branches, the media, and other related topics. The delegation toured many monuments and memorials, as well as visited the Smithsonian Museums and the National Holocaust Museum. The delegation also visited the White House Visitors Center, United States Supreme Court, the National Archives, and the Library of Congress. Additionally, the youth had the opportunity to meet with a staff member from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s office and toured the United States Capitol. Ilium Literary Club of Troy monthly meeting

The Ilium Literary Club of Troy will hold its monthly meeting at 2 PM on Friday, 4/05/19, at the Troy Masonic Community Center, 39 Brunswick Rd, Troy. Our guest speaker will be Jill Witbeck Knapp, author of “A Time for Redemption”.  Guests are welcome to attend.

Friday, Nov 1st, the bus leaves at 6:15am from Dick’s Sporting Goods, Latham Farms and makes stops at The Shoppes at American Candle in Bartonsville, Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse, Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market in Bird in Hand, and your final stop will be Comfort Inn Lancaster – Rockvale Outlet. You’re on your own Friday night to do more shopping & have dinner. Saturday includes a complimentary breakfast at the hotel and more time at The Shops at Rockvale before you have the option to head out to Tanger Outlets and/or Kozier’s Christmas Village in Bernville (additional cost). Sunday also begins with a complimentary breakfast at the hotel before the bus leaves at 9am for Philadelphia Premium Outlets in Pottstown and arriving back in Latham at 9pm.

Cost per person (based on room occupancy) – Double: $225/person, Triple: $185/person, or Quad $165/person. The fee includes bus, hotel, and driver’s tip. Reserve your spot with a $75 deposit by April 30. Final Payment due by Sept 2nd. One bus only. First come basis. No refunds.

Civilian Preparedness Expert David Diemer to Speak at HVCC

David Diemer, a former Army Ranger with more than 20 years of experience in close protection and guard services, will present Watch Your Back, Look Ahead: Preparedness in an Age of Uncertainty on Monday, April 1st, at Hudson Valley Community College. The free presentation will run from noon to 1 p.m. in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium on the Troy campus and is open to the public.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail, according to Diemer, who teaches strategies for civilian preparedness as CEO of R.E.A.C.H. 29, a full-service security business specializing in executive protection and site security that employs a network of security professionals throughout the world. Diemer’s experience is drawn from his military service and work with elite U.S. defense contractors. As a member of B Company 3/75 Ranger Regiment, he served in Somalia conducting high-threat missions, most notably the Oct. 3, 1993 mission chronicled in the movie “Black Hawk Down,” for which he was awarded a Bronze Star. Time will be allotted for questions from the audience.

Tools for Caregivers Event

The Rensselaer County Dept for Aging is sponsoring a Tools for Caregivers event, which will provide caregivers with useful resources they can use when a Senior relies on them.   The event will be held at Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday, April 6th, 2019 at 8:30am-1:00pm.  This is a FREE event!  Please pre-register by calling Angela at 518-279-5502 or by emailing crccreg@nullgmail.com.
