Talk on preventing bad luck at Stephentown Historical Society

Learn why horseshoes were placed over doors, shoes placed in walls and broken ceramics placed under hearthstones in a talk by architectural historian Walter Wheeler on Sunday, February 3. The 2:00 p.m. meeting of the Stephentown Historical Society will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road (corner of Garfield Road), Stephentown, New York.  The program is free and the building is handicapped accessible.  For directions, telephone (518) 733-0010.

Wheeler will talk about rituals and practices found in dwellings and public buildings in the Hudson Valley area from 1625 to the present.  His program entitled, “Magical Dwelling: Apotropaic Practices In the New World Dutch Cultural Hearth,” will explain how practices to ward off evil were brought to the region by early European immigrants and transformed over time.  Wheeler is Senior Architectural Historian at Hartgen Archeological Associates, Inc. in Rensselaer, New York.
