Talk on preventing bad luck at Stephentown Historical Society
Learn why horseshoes were placed over doors, shoes placed in walls and broken ceramics placed under hearthstones in a talk by architectural historian Walter Wheeler on Sunday, February 3. The 2:00 p.m. meeting of the Stephentown Historical Society will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road (corner of Garfield Road), Stephentown, New York. Wheeler will talk about rituals and practices found in dwellings and public buildings in the Hudson Valley area from 1625 to the present. His program entitled, “Magical Dwelling: Apotropaic Practices In the New World Dutch Cultural Hearth,” will explain how practices to ward off evil were brought to the region by early European immigrants and transformed over time. Wheeler is Senior Architectural Historian at Hartgen Archeological Associates, Inc. in Rensselaer, New York.
People of the Plateau present talk and reading with L. Davis
Thursday, February 14, Sand Lake Town Hall, 7 PM. Rensselaer Plateau Alliance “People of the Plateau” Lecture Series presents: Talk and Reading with Nassau Writer Lydia Davis. Lydia Davis has been publishing short stories utterly unlike anyone else’s for almost 40 years. Sometimes her stories are as brief as a single sentence or several paragraphs, dispensing with conventional narrative and character in favor of wit and insight. Davis was awarded the Man Booker International Prize in 2013. She received a MacArthur fellowship award in 2003. She is a Professor Emeritus at SUNY Albany, having retired in 2016 from its Creative Writing Department. $5 suggested donation.

Repair Café
What do you do with a broken lamp? Or a sweater with a hole? Toss it? No way! The Village of Castleton-on-Hudson is hosting its next Repair Café at the Village Hall, 85 South Main Street, on Saturday, February 9, from 11 AM to 3 PM. People visiting the Repair Café bring along their broken but beloved items. Volunteers try their best to make repairs, and it’s free of charge!

Mount to host Educator Recruitment Day, school districts invited to attend
NEWBURGH, N.Y. – January 2019 – Mount Saint Mary College, in partnership with the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, invites school districts from Long Island through Albany to participate in the inaugural Educator Recruitment Day on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Mount Saint Mary College.
The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Mount campus, 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh N.Y. Registration is limited to the first 70 school districts that apply.

Do you have old family photographs, letters, diaries, or other precious items that you would like to preserve? This presentation will discuss how to properly preserve your family’s important documents and photos. It will also provide tips on how to store, display, label, and handle these materials. Preserving these materials will assist family members, now or in the future, to retrace and reconstruct your family history.
Mike Maloney is the librarian and archivist at the Schenectady County Historical Society in Schenectady, NY, where he enjoys assisting researchers, researching and writing blog posts for the library’s blog, organizing and preserving the library’s collections, and planning programs to promote Schenectady’s rich history.

Paint ‘N Sip at Hope Lutheran
On Saturday, February 9th, there will be a Paint ‘n Sip event beginning at 7pm at Hope Lutheran Church, 470 Winter Street Extension (Former St. Timothy’s), North Greenbush.
Amy DeWeerd, local author and children’s book illustrator will conduct the evening’s activities. The program is free, and all supplies will be provided. Ms. DeWeerd has written and illustrated two children’s books, “How a Mother Loves,” and “Scooter & Sophie”, both books featured animals from Kinderhook Farms in Columbia County. 4-H Tractor Safety Program (Hosta) April 22-24, 2019
OPEN TO YOUTH 14 YEARS AND OLDER as of April 22nd.
Do you want to learn essential safety skills, gain hands on experience with a variety of agriculture equipment (such as tractors, skid steers, and ATVs), and earn your HOSTA safety certification? Then the 4-H Tractor Safety Program is just for you! Rensselaer County 4-H would like to welcome all area youth 4-H and non, 14 years old and older to participate in the 2019 Capital District 4-H HOSTA/Tractor Safety Program. This program is a great opportunity for youth who currently work on farms or around machinery, those who will be seeking employment on a farm, or anyone who would just like to learn more about farm and machinery safety. The classes will be held at various Agribusinesses in the Capital District. You must call the CCE office to pre-register at 518-272-4210. Cost of the program is $35 and will be due on the first day of class. There is also a mandatory orientation on March 26th at our office (61 State Street Troy, NY 12180) from 6:30-7:30.
