Dance Alliance Pat & Sven Peterson Summer Dance Scholarship

The Dance Alliance of the Capital Region is proud to announce the Pat & Sven Peterson Summer Dance Scholarship program for Summer 2019! Dancers in grade 7 though sophomore year in college who are planning on attending a summer dance intensive program are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be a current student member of the Dance Alliance and for a small fee of $6.00 may join to become a member by going to http://www.dancealliance.org/membership/join/.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the applicant’s past dance experience and potential to make a contribution in dance to the applicant’s local dance community or to the field of dance in general.  Preference is given to those who are in the Capital District and those who have not recently received a scholarship from the Dance Alliance. Albany Upstate NY Chapter of the United States Imperial Soc. of Teachers of Dancing, Inc. (USISTD)

We are excited to announce the formation of the Albany Upstate NY Chapter of the United States Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, Inc. (USISTD) Ours is the first chapter to be established in America. The USISTD is an organization of professional dance instructors who are working to elevate the quality of all couples dancing by providing instruction, testing and educational materials. The local chapters are the first to allow membership of all dance enthusiasts.

Our local chapter was formed last fall. Our purpose is to make educational dance opportunities for all. We will be holding monthly learn and practice events. The first one is scheduled for March 16, 2019, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. It will be held at Danceland in Latham. The focus for the day is Latin. There will be 3 sessions: ChaCha/ Bachata/Salsa. The lessons will be taught by well-known figures in the Dance community: Louise Giuliano, Felix Ortiz and Joy Barnard. There will be time to practice what is learned after each lesson and coaches will be available to help and answer questions. No partner is needed, and the cost will be $15. per person and $10. for members of USISTD.

 

Search and Rescue Volunteers Needed

The Tri-State Emergency Team is recruiting volunteers to provide wildland and underwater searches within a 100-mile radius of Waterford, NY.  This includes all aspects of field and underwater search.  The Tri-State Emergency Team responds when requested by NYS Forest Rangers and other Police Agencies throughout New York State, Western Vermont and Massachesettes.

We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need.   The team will provide training and complete support as needed.  Our headquarters is located in Waterford.  Applicants need not live in Waterford to volunteer. Four Teams Set to Square Off in Semifinals of 3-On-3 MAAC Corporate Basketball Challenge

ALBANY, NY; – Four teams are set to compete in the semifinals of the 3-on-3 MAAC Corporate Challenge after a weekend of exhilarating basketball action at the Albany YMCA.

The semifinals will pit Capital Region financial institutions and financial investment organizations against one another when Ayco matches up against SEFCU and CAP COM clashes with Northwestern Mutual on Saturday, March 9, at the Albany YMCA. Game times are at 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is free. All four teams advanced following round-robin elimination play on Sunday, February 24, at the Albany YMCA.

The eight-team tournament was developed to extend the excitement of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships to corporate boardrooms and businesses throughout the Capital Region. The tournament is being run and administered by the Capital District YMCA.

“The first rounds of the 3-on-3 MAAC Corporate Basketball Challenge were a tremendous success and the semifinals will surely bring even more excitement for basketball fans in the Capital Region,” said David Brown, president and CEO of the Capital District YMCA.

Both Ayco and CAP COM went undefeated in opening round competition to secure the number one seeds, while Northwestern Mutual and SEFCU advanced with a 2-1 record as the corporate challenge moves closer to crowning a champion.

In addition to tournament play, each of the participating teams also competed in a friendly 3-point contest and free throw competition. Ryan Regan of Northwestern Mutual won the 3-point contest after making 9 out of 10 shots, while Thomas Santiago of SEFCU was victorious during the free throw competition.

Each semifinal game will be contested over a 20-minute period and will be decided by the first team to score 21 points or is in the lead at the end of regulation time.

The two teams to emerge from the semifinals of the 3-on-3 MAAC Corporate Basketball Challenge will square off on Championship Monday between 4 and 8 p.m. during the fourth annual Hannaford MAAC-n-Cheese Fest on March 11 at the Albany Capital Center. Both the winner and second-place team will be honored during the MAAC Men’s Championship.

The Hannaford MAAC-n-Cheese Fest will follow the MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship on Monday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. and take place prior to the MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship which tips off at 9 p.m. Both games will be held at the Times Union Center, which is connected by walkway to the Albany Capital Center.

While there is no admission charge to attend the finals of the 3-on-3 MAAC Corporate Basketball Challenge, tickets are required to sample gourmet mac-n-cheese dishes from numerous local restaurants during the Hannaford MAAC-n-Cheese Fest. Several craft beer and wine options from regional breweries and wineries will also be available for tasting.

Tickets for the Hannaford MAAC-n-Cheese Fest are available at www.albanyfanfest.com. Fans can save $2 per set of sampling tickets with advance purchase. Tickets purchased in advance are $8 and entitle guests to five samples of mac-n-cheese. Tasting tickets will also be available at the door for $10 (cash only).

Craft beer and wine tasting tickets will be $5 for three samples and are available exclusively at the event (cash only; must be at least 21 years old with a valid ID).

For ages 6 and up

Bats April 6 ($3): Learn about native bats and what makes them special, complete a bat themed craft and play a game to enhance understanding of how bats hunt.
Birds May 4 ($3): Learn about the adaptations that make birds unique as well as how to identify common local birds by sight and sound. We will cover binocular use before taking a short hike to practice our identification skills and to explore habitat. Binoculars are available for loan to all participants.
Family Snowshoeing: Saturday, March 16 1-3pm
Learn the fundamentals of snowshoeing and animal tracking while enjoying a beautiful natural setting. Outdoor family fun for all! Preregistration is required. Fee: $5 includes snowshoe rental.
Tuesday Treks: Every Tuesday 1-3pm
We will hike, snowshoe or ski about 2-3 miles depending on conditions every Tuesday afternoon in March. Please call or check the website for updated conditions and possible cancellations. Registration Open For 41st Freihofer’s Run for Women in June

ALBANY, N.Y.— Online registration for the 41st Freihofer’s® Run for Women (Saturday, June 1 at 9 a.m.), the Capital Region’s premier all-women’s 5K road race, is now open at freihofersrun.com.
All registrants will receive a high-performance women’s commemorative t-shirt. Other perks include: a box of delicious Freihofer’s® chocolate chip cookies; a fresh loaf of Freihofer’s® bread; chip timing; live results; printable finisher certificates; free massages; chiropractic adjustments and discounted running gear at the event’s Health & Fitness Expo; live music both around the course and post event; post-race refreshments courtesy of Price Chopper Supermarkets; and, races for the kids throughout the morning. To help participants get in shape for race day, registration is also underway for the 9th annual Freihofer’s® Training Challenge starting Monday, March 18.  You can sign up for the 10-week program when you register online for the Freihofer’s Run 5K. Online registration through the 5K registration is the only method of registering for this program.
The Training Challenge costs $55 and includes a Training Challenge tech shirt; seminars and clinics relating to strength training, nutrition, injury prevention, running form and core strength; and, offers from program partners, including a free 10-week CDYMCA membership and class discounts at Brick House.
For those who can’t attend in-person Freihofer’s® Training Challenge sessions, but would still like to increase their fitness levels, a virtual Training Challenge program is also offered. The program, which costs $10, features e-mails sent 3-4 times a week outlining workouts for beginner, intermediate and advanced runners.

Clayton Besch of West Sand Lake, N.Y., Invited to 2019 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester Polytechnic Institute Senior Jack Bauer and sophomore Clayton Besch earned individual invitations while the medley relays were also selected to participate in the 2019 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by the ODAC and Greensboro Sports Commission March 20-23 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, NC.

Bauer is the top seed in the 100-yard backstroke and second in the 200-yard backstroke, and Besch is the ninth seed in the 100-yard butterfly. The 400-yard medley relay consisting of Bauer, junior Dave Chen, senior Jackson Perry and graduate student Craig Barrett is ranked 10th as the 200- version featuring Bauer, Chen, Besch and Senior Jean Philippe Miralda is 13th.

Perry and Bauer are also eligible to take part in the 100 fly by virtue of achieving B cuts in the event.

The 200 was sixth and the 400 was 11th, and Bauer was seventh in the 100 back and 19th in the 100 fly two years ago in Houston. The 200 also placed 21st the last time an Engineer contingent traveled to Greensboro (2016).

 

4-H Shooting Sports Air Rifle Session for Youth

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County 4-H Youth Development program is holding a four week 4-H Air Rifle session. This program is for youth ten and older who would like to learn about the safe and responsible use of firearms as well as equipment maintenance and other related topics. In doing so, the 4-H Shooting Sports program provides opportunities for youth to gain valuable skills, practice leadership, and build relationships with non-parent adults. This 4-H Shooting Sports session will meet on Thursdays, April 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. There will be a mandatory safety class on Thursday, March 28, at 6:00pm at the CCE office, located at 61 State St., Troy on the second floor. There is a $40.00 registration fee for 4-H members and $50.00 for non-members. Pre-registration is required, and registration will be limited. Caraline Wood of Wynantskill, Honored as WPI Women’s Student-Athlete of the Week

WORCESTER, MA — Caraline Wood from the softball team has been honored as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 3rd.

Wood batted .750 (6-for-8) with a pair of doubles, a home run and four RBI on the day as WPI opened up the 2019 campaign by knocking off Simmons, 3-1, and Bluffton (OH), 9-1, Sunday at the Sunkissed Games. In the opener against the Sharks, the senior was 2-for-3 with a double before going 4-for-5 in the nightcap versus the Beavers with a double, home run and four RBI.

 

Averill Park Road Runners Track and Field Program

Register now for the Averill Park Road Runners 2019 Track & Field season! The club is for anyone ages 7-14 who enjoys running, jumping, throwing and having FUN!  Events include sprints, distance running, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, turbo javelin and discus. AP School District residency is NOT required. Practices at AP High School Monday & Thursday evenings and some optional Saturday mornings. Several meets throughout the season, from April 8th through the USATF Junior Olympics in July and August.

The Brunswick Baseball League is currently registering players for the 2019 Minors & Majors House League programs. All players 13-16 and 17& UP are eligible to register. The Brunswick Baseball League is an independent league, all interested players regardless of residence are welcome. The Minors program begins in late April and the Majors program begins on Memorial Day Weekend.
