Poestenkill Youth Summer Camp

Poestenkill Summer Camp will be held July 8th-August 2nd at Poestenkill Elementary School from 9am-4pm. Each week will be filled with field trips to a variety of locations around the Capital Region including Grafton, Billy Beez, Fun Plex, Liberty Ridge Farm, Valley Cats, Zoom Flume, etc., art projects, STEM challenges, physical activities, water activities and visitors to camp. APHS Class of 1989 30th Year Reunion

Planning is in the works to celebrate our 30th year reunion. August 17th is the tentative date and we are currently looking into possible venues. 7th Annual CHS 60’s Reunion

Summer is coming and Labor Day will follow, which means the 7th annual CHS 60’s Reunion will be Saturday, September 7, 2019. Please mark your calendar and save the date. As always, we meet every year the first Saturday after Labor Day. All classes from the 60’s including ‘60 to ‘69 along with all pre ‘60’s classes are invited to attend. We will meet again at the East Greenbush Firehouse pavilion on Phillips Road from 4 to 9 PM. Beer, wine, mixed drinks and soda, along with food will be available at reasonable prices. All are asked to pay $5 to cover expenses and the surplus will be donated to CoNSERNS-U for their back to school program. Wynantskill UFSD- Register Kindergartners Now for 2019-20 School Year

Parents of children who will attend kindergarten at Gardner-Dickinson School in the fall are encouraged to register their children now. Your child must be 5 years old by Dec. 1, 2019 to attend kindergarten in September.

To register, parents are asked to call Ms. Fazioli at 518-283-4600 ext. 10, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Forms and registration information are also available at www.wynantskillufsd.org.

Registering your child for kindergarten now will make sure your child is ready to start the school year by ensuring all the necessary pvaperwork is on file. It also helps Wynantskill UFSD plan for the upcoming school year by providing school officials a better estimate of how many kindergarteners will attend school.

Greenbush Garden Club Awards Grants

Each year the Greenbush Garden Club awards grant to local schools or community organizations for educational programs and/or community beautification projects, ideally targeted to kids.

This year the Club awarded grants to the Robert C Parker school for a ground cherry garden and to the Green Meadow School for a rock garden.  We wish them every success with these projects.

Money for the grants and the Club’s Garden Therapy program at Van Renesselear Manor is raised at our plant sale which is held in May of each year.

New members are always welcome. The Club meets at the East Greenbush Library.  For the months of September, October and November of this year we will meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.  We hope to see you then.

Joshua Kenna named to Keuka College Dean’s List

Keuka Park, N.Y. – Joshua Kenna, son of Mary & John Kenna and resident of Rensselaer, has been named to the Dean’s list at Keuka College in Keuka Park. Kenna, a Junior is studying Biology with Biomedical Studies.

A Keuka College student must earn at least 3.50 grade-point-average for a minimum of 12 semester credit hours to be eligible for the dean’s list.

Located in the Finger Lakes region near Penn Yan, Keuka College is a private co-educational college.

Katherine Guilbo named to College of the Holy Cross Dean’s List

Worchester, Mass – Katherine Guilbo, a fourth-year student at the College of the Holy Cross, has been named to the Dean’s list for the second semester of the 2018-19 academic year. She is the daughter of Bill and Judy Guilbo of East Greenbush. She is majoring in Biology.

Madison Burns Of East Greenbush, NY Named To Athletic Director Scholars Academic Honor Roll At Hofstra University

HEMPSTEAD, NY (07/15/2019)– Hofstra University and the Department of Athletics are excited to announce the creation of the Hofstra Athletic Director Scholars Academic Honor Roll, recognizing the incredible work of Pride student-athletes in the classroom.

Madison Burns of East Greenbush, NY has earned a spot on the initial list.

A total of 159 Hofstra student-athletes were named to the list for the spring semester.

Purchase College students named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2019 semester

PURCHASE, NY (07/16/2019)– Purchase College announced that more than 1,300 students were named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester. Students who have earned this academic honor have maintained a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and taken a minimum of 12 credits. For BA and BS programs a semester GPA of 3.50 is required. For BFA and MusB programs a semester GPA of 3.75 is required.

Carolyn Corcoran Honored on Empire 8 President’s List

ELMIRA, NY (07/16/2019)– The Empire 8 Conference honored 77 Elmira College student-athletes, including Carolyn Corcoran (Softball) of Mechanicville, NY, on its President’s List, which recognizes student-athletes who earned a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher during the spring term. In addition, a total of 11 EC teams were named to the E8 All-Academic Team for possessing a GPA of 3.20 and higher.

600 New York National Guard Soldiers head to Fort Drum for Annual Training

Soldiers will conduct a computerized command post exercise

TROY (07/17/2019) (readMedia)– Six hundred New York Army National Guard Soldiers from across the state head to Fort Drum this weekend for a command post exercise that runs July 19-31.

Soldiers from headquarters units located in Troy, Syracuse, Latham, and New York City will participate in a computer simulation that tests their ability to plan and execute division, brigade and battalion level missions.

The computer simulation forces the Soldiers to plan missions and conduct staff functions just as they would in an actual battle.

Lauren Houser Named To Dean’s List At Loyola University Maryland

BALTIMORE, MD (07/17/2019)– Lauren Houser, a member of the class of 2021 from Rensselaer, has been named to the spring 2019 Dean’s List at Loyola University Maryland.

In order to qualify for the Dean’s List at Loyola, a student must achieve a minimum QPA of at least 3.500 for the term, provided that, in the term they have successfully completed courses totaling a minimum of 15 credits.

Scholarship Winner

Will Ballard, son of Charles and Mary Ballard of Poestenkill, has been named the recipient of the Dunham Hollow-West Stephentown Scholarship.  This Scholarship was established in memory of Frank Johnson. Will will be attending The University of North Western Ohio to study High Performance Automotive.  We wish Will much success in his new venture.

Columbia Graduate Named to St. John Fisher College Dean’s List

PITTSFORD, N.Y., July 2019—J. Conner Wright, son of Lisa C. Wright of North Greenbush and James W. Wright of Watertown has been named to the Spring 2019 Dean’s List at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. Wright will be entering his senior year in the fall and is a Criminal Justice major.

To be eligible for the Dean’s List at St. John Fisher College a student must have attained at least a 3.5 grade-point average for the semester.

NY National Guard Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation Conduct Annual Training July 21-August 14

UH-60 helicopter unit has elements at Albany International Airport in Latham and McArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma

LATHAM, NY (07/18/2019) — Over 250 New York Army National Guard Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation Regiment will conduct their annual training at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, and Fort Drum, New York from July 21 to August 4.

New York Army National Guard Promotions

LATHAM, NY (07/18/2019)– Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General for the State of New York, announces the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership.

Brandon Moseman from Malta, N.Y. and assigned to the Company B, Recruiting and Retention received a promotion to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Patrick Leahey from Averill Park, N.Y. and assigned to the Company C, 2-108th Infantry received a promotion to the rank of Private First Class.

Nicodeme Esmel from Rensselaer, N.Y. and assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 369th Sustainment Brigade received a promotion to the rank of Sergeant First Class.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential.

These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified Soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

Over 200 Civil Air Patrol Cadets conduct week-long training event at Stratton Air National Guard Base

Annual encampment begins on July 20 and runs until July 27

SCOTIA, N.Y. (07/18/2019) (readMedia)– Two hundred and thirteen Civil Air Patrol Cadets will attend the annual Civil Air Patrol encampment hosted by the 109th Airlift Wing at Stratton Air National Guard Base from July 20 to July 27.

The encampment will be run by 61 staff cadets overseen by 46 senior Civil Air Patrol members.The cadets come from several northeastern states.

Local Students Named to Dean’s List at University of Rochester

Frederick Howard, a first-year student majoring in electrical engineering at the University of Rochester, has been named to the Dean’s List for academic achievement for the spring 2019 semester.

Howard, a resident of East Greenbush, N.Y., is the child of Sarah Howard and Timothy Howard, and a graduate of Columbia High School in East Greenbush, N.Y.

Andrew Balogh, a sophomore majoring in electrical engineering at the University of Rochester, has been named to the Dean’s List for academic achievement for the spring 2019 semester.

Balogh, a resident of Averill Park, N.Y., is the child of Janice Balogh and George Balogh, and a graduate of Averill Park High School in Averill Park, N.Y.

Lyndsey Farrar Awarded Degree from Miami University

OXFORD, OH (07/18/2019)– Farrar of East Greenbush was among more than 3,800 students from Miami University who received degrees during spring commencement exercises Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Millett Hall.

Farrar graduated with a Master of Science degree, majoring in Geology.

Latham National Guard brigade gets new commander on Saturday, July 20

LATHAM, NY (07/19/2019) — Lt. Col. Michael Charnley, a Churchville, Monroe County resident, who has served in Panama, Bosnia, and Kuwait, will take command of the New York Army National Guard’s 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade during a traditional ceremony at the Army flight facility in Latham on Saturday morning, July 20.

Charnley will replace Col. Jack James who has commanded the brigade since 2014. James is moving into the position of commander of the New York Army National Guard’s 53rd Troop Command, one of its two general officer commands. James will be promoted following the change of command ceremony
