Rensselaer County Kicks Off Summer Summer Food Program to Keep Kids Fed

RENSSELAER COUNTY – Rensselaer County kicked off its annual Summer Food Program last week and our Legislators were on hand to support the great program that provides healthy meals and snacks to kids in summer camps and youth programs at 21 sites across the county.

“The County’s summer food program is an important part of the summer camp experience for so many children. The campers at the YMCA today were amazed to learn that Rensselaer County provides over 100,000 summer meals each year. It is a program the Legislature is thrilled to support”, Vice-Chair of the Legislature Kelly Hoffman- North Greenbush.

Kelly Hoffman was joined by Legislators Dan Casale and Tom Grant. Tri-City ValleyCats mascot South Paw also made an appearance at the kick-off event held at the East Greenbush YMCA.

“Thanks to the summer food program, kids who receive their meals at school don’t have to worry about healthy meals and snacks during their summer programs. This program is a win-win for the children and their families”, said Legislator Dan Casale- Brunswick

“It is always a pleasure to see happy kids take advantage of the wonderful programs at the East Greenbush YMCA, and I am very pleased that Rensselaer County is in a position to provide these meals to youth programs throughout the county”, said Legislator Tom Grant- East Greenbush

The Summer Food Program is in its 47th year, and County Executive Steve McLaughlin is proud to keep the program going.

“The Summer Food program is one of the most important services provided by Rensselaer County and our partners. It shows that kids who need support are not forgotten during the summer,” said McLaughlin.

Schodack Supervisor’s Report for June 2021

SCHODACK – With the help and support of our County Legislators, Scott Bendett, Bob Loveridge, and Chuck Peter, and County Executive Steve McLaughlin, I was able to work with County Clerk Frank Merola on developing a plan on bringing the satellite DMV office back to Schodack. It is with great excitement that I can now share with you that once again, you will be able to process your DMV needs each Tuesday beginning on July 13th. This is a great service we are able to offer our residents in collaboration with Rensselaer County and I want to thank Frank Merola again for all his hard work and dedication to ensuring these offices got reopened.

On Tuesday, June 29th, we held our final “Music in The Park” concert for the year. While many weeks didn’t provide ideal weather, it was great to get back to this summer tradition after having to cancel it during the pandemic last year. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported the local vendors selling food, and I especially want to thank all our musical acts for once again providing such great entertainment for our residents. Overseeing “Music in the Park” has been one of the highlights of my time in office and I appreciate everyone who helps make it possible.

On Friday, June 25th, I was proud to join with many of my fellow elected officials as we attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly opened Curtis Lumber store on 9&20 built next to their previous one. Curtis Lumber has been a great neighbor and provides excellent service to our residents. We thank the folks at Curtis for building on and continuing their investment in Schodack and look forward to it for many years to come. This is just one of the many economic growth projects I have been proud to help bring to fruition and there is still more to come.

I hope you all enjoyed Independence Day and spent time with loved ones. This year feels like it has a little extra significance in light of the past year and all the challenges we have overcome together. Happy Birthday America!
