The 5th Annual July 4th 1776 Celebration

Everyone is invited to attend this annual community event on Thursday, July 4, 2019, from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Village of Nassau Commons on John Street. At this alcohol-free event, beef hot dogs, watermelon and ice cream are provided by the organizers, Hudson Valley-Berkshires Interfaith Network. Bring something to share, gather with your neighbors to celebrate our American tradition of religious freedom and peace with freedom, recognizing the unity of all in these United States.  

A traditional “Barn Dance” is from 10:30 to 11:45 featuring George Wilson leading the Megaband with Melanie Axel-Lute calling, paid for by a grant from Dance Flurry Organization (DFO) The reading of the Declaration of Independence at 1:00 is followed by an Awards Ceremony honoring three volunteers who have dedicated themselves to community service. Independence Day Celebration at Schuyler Mansion

July 4th, 2019, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site invites the public to attend an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration on the mansion grounds, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Schuyler Mansion will offer a “Hands-On History” tent where children and their families may enjoy signing the Declaration of Independence with quill pens, crafts, and playing with colonial games and toys

Schuyler Mansion will be available for Open House (self-guided) tours from noon to 4:00 p.m. at $3.00 per person (children 12 and under free). Visitors may take this opportunity to tour Philip Schuyler’s elegant 18th-century home at their leisure.

Free Stewart’s Shops ice cream will be available. Along with Friends of Schuyler Mansion, Stewart Shops, and the Times Union are supporters of this special family event.

Schuyler Mansion is located at 32 Catherine Street in Albany’s historic South End and was the 18th-century home of Revolutionary War Major-General Philip Schuyler (1733-1804) and his family. 4th of July Celebration at MBCC

4th of July Celebration at the Malden Bridge Community Center a/k/a MBCC at 1087 Albany Turnpike in the hamlet of Malden Bridge – zip 12115.

Following the 4th of July community parade in nearby Old Chatham the members of MBCC will hold an Open House while offering delicious strawberry shortcakes covered with freshly whipped cream donated by Stewarts Shops, along with a variety of drinks for a donation of Five Dollars per serving starting at 10AM.

Take outs will be available but why not plan to stay and join with us for the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence at 11 AM.

There will be a large number of items donated by area merchants in a Silent Auction area for which attendees may bid.

As always, plenty of space for sitting and visiting while enjoying your shortcake.

The Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop 

Shop will be closed on July 4th and 6th to give our volunteers a well-deserved rest.  Please visit us when we reopen on Thursday July 11th at 3 PM and again on Saturday the 13th at 9 AM. Some customers claim they need 2 days to see all the wonderful merchandise we have to offer!

Restaurant Salad Contest at Watervliet Strawberry Fest

New this year at the Watervliet Senior Center’s 7th Annual Strawberry Festival Friday July 12 from 4-6, local restaurants will compete for “Best Salad” during the event! The annual event is a fundraiser for the Senior Center and for $10 includes Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Salads, and Strawberry Shortcake.  The event is held at the center, open to anyone, and there is a 50/50 raffle, a basket raffle, and entertainer Don Hyman a local favorite!  You can sign up in advance at the Watervliet senior center at 1501 Broadway, or pay at the door that evening too.

Some of our local favorites, including Arsenal City Tavern, On the Hill Café, and more will be making the salads to go along with the BBQ.  Attendees will be able to vote for their favorite!  And, Bob Beston, our County Legislator, is making the hot dogs and hamburgers.  Mr. Beston hosts this event to help raise money for the center.

Bennington Battlefield Announces Upcoming Events

The following events will be taking place at Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, located off of NY-67 in Walloomsac, New York. For more information, visitors may contact Site Assistant David Pitlyk by e-mail, at david.pitlyk@nullparks.ny.gov, or by telephone, 518-860-9094. Tours of the battlefield may also be arranged by appointment.

July 7th at 10:00 AM the site will offer an “early bird” tour of the main areas of the First Engagement of the battle. Some driving is required to travel between the three stops. Visitors will meet under the flagpole.

July 20th at 1:00 PM Historic Site Assistant David Pitlyk will deliver a presentation on the Battle of Bennington for the Riders Mills Historical Association at the schoolhouse located at Riders Mills Road and Drowne Road, Old Chatham NY.

July 25th at 4:00 PM the trustees of the Friends of the Bennington Battlefield will be meeting at the Barnett House (30 Caretaker’s Road, Hoosick Falls, NY).July 27th at 7:00 PM there will be a Fireside History presentation. The subject will be cannon at the Battle of Bennington. Visitors will meet near the upper parking area and enjoy an open fire and refreshments.

August 3rd at 4:00 PM there will be a guided hike of the Battle Loop Trail. Visitors will meet under the flagpole.

August 16th at 7:00 PM the Friends of the Bennington Battlefield will host the annual commemoration of the Battle of Bennington. The program will include DAR and SAR representatives and students from Hoosick Falls. The ceremony will take place near the flagpole.

August 17th at 11:00 AM Park Ranger Eric Schnitzer of the Saratoga National Historical Park will present on his new collaboration, Don Troiani’s Campaign to Saratoga – 1777: The Turning Point of the Revolutionary War in Paintings, Artifacts, and Historical Narrative. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. The program will be held in the Caretakers House (30 Caretakers Road, Hoosick Falls, NY).

August 18th, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM: Tours of the battlefield will be available to interested visitors. Groups will meet under the flagpole.

August 31st at 12:00 PM the battlefield will host Volunteer Day at the Tory Fort. Volunteers will be arranging small fence rail logs at the Tory Fort. Work gloves are recommended.  Refreshments will be served to participants. Parking will be available on the grounds of the Barnett House (30 Caretakers Road, Hoosick Falls, NY).

Nassau Block Dance

The Village of Nassau Bicentennial Committee in concert with the Nassau Hose Company #1 will be holding a Block Dance on Saturday, July 20th from 6:00-10:00 at the firehouse on Chatham Street  in the Village. Food will be available from our local vendors, a bake sale and 50/50 raffle along with music by the SESSION BROTHERS will be there for your enjoyment. Chatham Street will close to traffic at 5:30. Bring your family, and BRING YOUR CHAIRS, for a fun filled evening  with friends and neighbors.

Stephentown Historical Society Seeks Goods For Tag Sale

Do you have too much “stuff”?  Your donations can help support the Stephentown Historical Society and its programs.  Good clean usable items are needed for the Community Tag Sale to be held on Saturday, July 27, at Gardner’s Field at 15879 Rt. 22 in Stephentown, New York.  Small appliances should be in working order. Please do not donate large appliances, clothing, computers, computer equipment, televisions, plastic Christmas decorations, records or VHS tapes.  If you have items to donate, please take them to the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road on Fridays, July 12, 19, and 26, between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m., or to Gardner’s after 8:00 a.m. on the day of the sale.  Call 518-733-5170 for information or to arrange for drop off.  Please do not leave donations if no one is at the Center.

Selling spaces will also be available for individuals or organizations for $20.00, so gather your saleable items. Tables, chairs, shade, or equipment are not provided. Vendors should arrive no earlier than 8:00 a.m. on the day of the sale.  The tag sale runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Rensselaer County’s Second Annual Farm Day Out!

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County and The Eckhardt Family at Kinderhook Creek Farm from 12-3pm on Sunday, August 18th, for Rensselaer County’s Second Annual Farm Day Out! Kinderhook Creek Farm is an 1150+ acre field crop and vegetable farm that has been owned and operated by the Eckhardt’s since 1959. Once parked, a hay wagon ride will take you through some of the fields at Kinderhook Creek Farm. Through interactive demonstrations you will learn about the different crops (such as hay, grain, sweet corn, and the many vegetables) grown on this farm. You will also see how their farm products get to market and eventually to your family’s table. Also, be sure to visit exhibits set up by local organizations & businesses, experience the equipment used on the farm by the farmers and see the 4-H Club sponsored petting zoo. Food, corn on the cob, ice cold watermelon and other farm fresh foods will be available to purchase for your enjoyment. Admission and parking for this event is free and open to the public. The Veterans of Stephentown are hosting a Craft Fair on September 7, 2019 at the Veterans Memorial Park in Stephentown. Vendors Wanted for the SonShiners’ 5th Annual Craft-Tag Sale

Applications being accepted for our Annual Craft-Tag Sale of the SonShiners of the Stephentown Federated Church on Saturday, September 21, 2019, from 9 am to 4 pm at Ioka Valley Farm, 3475 RT 43, Hancock, MA. The fee to rent a 10’ X 10’ uncovered space outside on the lawn is $20. Bring your own tent/cover, tables, chairs. The event will be held rain or shine and all monies received will be considered a non-refundable donation. Applications are available by calling Barbara at 518-527-0182. Deadline for applications is September 13th. We’ll also be having an Ice Cream Social with make your own sundaes and root beer floats. No food vendors please.
