Village of East Nassau Cookie Contest
After a long time of curtailed activities of public gatherings due to Covid, this year we will once again be holding our Cookie Contest, held at the Hoags Corners Volunteer Firehouse located at 7237 Route 66 in East Nassau on Sunday, November 13 from 1 to 4 PM.
Prize for First Place winning cookie be $100 cash with $50 each for second and third place winners. This is an afternoon of local entertainment, with auctions, ice cream sundaes, wonderful cookies, and a chance to visit with your neighbors.
Please support this community event which also highlights neighborhood businesses for their donations. Proceeds from this event will be used for Village projects and charities. For further information, contact Diane Maguire the Village Clerk at (518) 766-5811.
2022 Wynantskill Veterans Toy Drive Party
The American Legion’s annual Veterans Toy Drive party will be held on Sunday, November 27th from 1PM to 5PM at the post located at 111 Main Ave. in Wynantskill, NY. There will be food, music, raffles, and even a visit from Santa Claus around 2:30PM. Admission will be $10, or you may bring a new, uwrapped toy to donate.
If you are unable to make the party but still wish to donate, along with the Legion post there are drop boxes in the following locations: Ace Hardware, Hannaford, LaBellas and MJ Barbershop all in Wynantskill, Grimm Building Materials in Green Island, Carol’s Eatery in Troy, and the Italian Charitable Foundation also in Troy.
All toys donated remain here in our local communities. We hope to see you there, and thank you for your support!

Veterans Day Celebration
Melvin Roads American Legion Post 1231 celebrates Veteran’s Day, 1:00 PM, Thursday , November 11th, 2021, at the post, 200 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush.
Enjoy the parade & then stop by Melvin Roads for our ceremony & refreshments. One hundred & four years ago, The Great War ended on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, at the eleventh hour. Our name’s sake Private Melvin Roads died the night before the Armistice took effect. PVT Roads served his country, and gave his life to a cause he believed in.
Post 1231 celebrates his service and the service of all veteran’s, along with their families. Please join us as we and our local representatives support all veterans everywhere. Refreshments are served after the ceremony.

BSA Troop 2166 of Nassau is participating in the Scouting for Food Drive. Our goal is to collect as many items of non-perishable food as possible to help our hungry neighbors. The need is greater now than ever! Donations may be dropped off on Saturday, November 12, from 9am-2pm at the following COVID-SAFE drive-thru drop-off location: Nassau Village Commons Pavilion, John St. (next to Post Office).

Sand Lake Historical Society Presents “The Land Doesn’t Forget”
On Tuesday November 15th 2022, the Sand Lake Historical Society will feature “The Land Doesn’t Forget” a first-ever program on the earliest inhabitants of Sand Lake, the Mohican people, by Historian and Indigenous Consultant Heather Bruegl. All the land that makes up the United States was in its entirety Indigenous land. Learn about the policies that removed Indigenous Nations from their homes and pushed them onto reservations, explore and learn about the maps that created the United States as we know it today, and understand why the fight to regain this land is important.
Heather Bruegl is a citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and first-line descendent Stockbridge Munsee. She is a graduate of Madonna University in Michigan and holds a BA and an MA in U.S. History. She is the former Director of Education of Forge Project, a decolonial art and education initiative on the unceded homelands of the Muh-he-con-ne-ok in Upstate New York, where she organized public programming and led its Fellowship program.
November’s program will be held at the Sand Lake Town Hall Courtroom, 8428 NY 66, Averill Park, beginning at 7PM. SLHS monthly programs are open to the public and are live-streamed on the SLHS website — http://sandlakehistory.org (archived video will also be posted there). Holiday Vendor and Craft Fair at Center Brunswick Fire Company

This event will feature many local crafters and vendors for your holiday shopping needs. There will also be raffles, 50/50, bake sale, free admission and parking.
518 Pajamas! Collection
The East Schodack Fire Company on Route 150 in East Schodack will be assisting the 518 Pajamas! Program this year by having a dropbox to collect new boys’ and girls’ pajamas (any size).
This program started six years ago to help the Unity House of Troy and the Christmas program they host. You can drop off new pajamas or make a donation at our Pizza night on 9/5 or Chicken & Biscuit Dinner on 9/8.
Sand Lake Veterans Day Ceremony
This year we will be holding our Veteran’s Day Ceremonies on Friday, November 11th, at 11:00 am to honor our Veterans at The Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park. Our honored speaker will be Colonel Heather Kness, USA, Ret. She hails from Averill Park, NY. She graduated from Averill Park High School in 1988.
She received her Army commission in 1992 in the Medical Service Corps as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Syracuse University.
She was Battalion Commander, 261st Multifunctional Medical Battalion (Fort Bragg, NC) and commanded the U.S. Army Medical Recruiting Brigade at Fort Knox, Kentucky. In addition to deployments to Bosnia in support of peacekeeping operations and Central America for hurricane relief operations, Colonel Kness served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003) and Operation Enduring Freedom (2007-2008 and 2011).
Colonel Kness is married to Colonel Lenny Kness, USA, Ret.. They have beautiful twin girls, Lily Anne and Ivy Jo, born on the Fourth of July 2018. The Kness family recently settled down in Averill Park following her retirement after 30 years of active service. Her husband also served for over 30 years as an Army Logistics Corps officer.

Hudson-Mohawk Weavers’ Guild 44th Annual Show & Sale
The Hudson-Mohawk Weavers’ Guild invites the public to its 44th Annual Show & Sale, held Saturday, November 26 through Monday, November 28. New for 2022 will be an exhibit of handwoven items inspired by a trip Guild members took to Scotland to learn about the rich textile history of that country.
The Guild is thrilled to return to Pat’s Barn for a second year. The Show & Sale has expanded into this new venue which offers both a historic setting and more room for displays and demonstrations. More than 40 handweavers will exhibit and sell their work at the Show & Sale, making it the largest display of handweaving in the Northeast. Admission and off-street parking are free.
The Show & Sale will have two full floors of exhibits, including: housewares such as rugs, blankets and table linens, garments such as scarves, shawls and jackets, as well as holiday gifts. The event features a wide range of options suitable for everyone’s holiday shopping list. Guild members work all year to prepare over 2500 items for sale.
A special exhibit will highlight a trip by 14 members of the Guild to Scotland in May. They traveled over 1100 miles by road and more by ferry to explore the Borders, Highlands and Inner and Outer Hebrides. The rich textile history of this country is still alive and well, and Guild members were inspired to create not only by the historic and contemporary weaving they saw, but also by the stunning landscapes of rolling hills, forested mountains and picture-perfect beaches.

Join Rensselaer Land Trust for their 2022 Annual Meeting
Please join RLT on Sunday, November 13 from 4-7pm at Brown’s Brewing Co’s Revolution Hall as they celebrate you, and all of RLT’s volunteers, friends, and their 35th Anniversary! To kick off the evening, George Wilson, local fiddler will fill Revolution Hall with warm and welcoming tunes.
The evening program will include a brief business meeting, celebrating honorees, and Environmental advocate and policy expert Judith Enck will share her thoughts on environmental stewardship.
Honorees include:
Andy Beers, prior Director of the Empire State Trail and Executive Deputy Commissioner for the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Andy also worked for seventeen years for the New York Office of The Nature Conservancy. Andy currently is assisting the Hudson River Valley Greenway on operations issues for the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail, a 36-mile rail-trail in Rensselaer and Columbia Counties.
Judith Enck, founder of Beyond Plastics, an initiative to end plastic pollution through education, advocacy, and institutional change. Judith is Passionate about protecting public health and the environment, she teaches classes on plastic pollution as a Senior Fellow and visiting faculty member at Bennington College.

NYS Youth Snowmobile Safety Class
On Saturday, November 12th, the Grafton Trailblazers Snowmobile Club and the Grafton Lakes State Park will host a NYS Youth Snowmobile Safety Class for youth ages 10-17. Students must be at least 10 years old the day of the class.
Parents are encouraged to attend and participate. The course will be held at the Grafton VFW/Fire Hall on South Road from 8:30am to approximately 4:30pm. The course will be taught by NYS certified volunteer instructors Jim Blessing and Dominic Jacangelo. The course will cover topics such as NYS laws and regulations, riding skills, trail emergencies, protecting the environment, trail etiquette, maintenance and repair, trailering, etc.

HVCC Offers Free, Live Concert Series during Fall Semester
The Cultural Affairs Program at Hudson Valley Community College will present a four-part concert series that begins Oct. 27 and concludes on Dec. 1. All of the upcoming programs will be Thursdays at noon in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium on the Troy campus. Each hour-long program will be open free to the public; no reservations or tickets are required to attend.
The McKrells – Thursday, Nov. 17 at noon – BTC Auditorium
Perennial local favorites, The McKrells has shared its Celtic-infused bluegrass around the world. Founder Kevin McKrell, singer, songwriter, guitarist; Arlin Greene, bass; Scott Hopkins, banjo; Brian Melick, percussion; Frank Orsini, fiddle, and Peter Pashoukos, guitar, will play from their vast repertoire, including “Still Pickin’,” a 2022 album.
