Pinpointing Where Your Ancestors Lived in Ireland at the Troy Public Library

The Troy Irish Genealogy Society and Old Friends Genealogy will be at the Troy Public Library on Sunday, September 15th at 1:30PM, to present their “Pinpointing Where Your Ancestors Lived in Ireland” program.

This program focuses on how one can use what is called a “shotgun approach” to finding records for your Irish ancestors who emigrated to the U.S. or elsewhere. The stage is set by talking about some critical U.S. records, (e.g. death certificates, cemetery plot cards, family bibles). Then the focus will be on the following types of Irish records:

• Personal Records: Both Roman Catholic and Protestant baptism and marriage records, 1901 and 1911 Censuses. Examples from several websites including: Roots Ireland, Irish Genealogy, Find My Past and the Ireland National Archives.

• Land Valuation Records: Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith’s Valuation (include historic maps and modern overlay maps)

• Ireland Cemetery Records: Historic Graves and other websites

• Historic Newspapers, Historical Societies and Libraries.

In addition to talking about all of the resources available in Ireland to “chase” one’s Irish ancestors, included will be lots of photos from trips to Ireland, talk about driving in Ireland and staying at B&Bs, and of course, some of that famous Irish humor along the way.

This program is free and open to the public. Call the library at 518-274-7071 or go online to www.thetroylibrary.org to reserve your spot. The Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy, New York.

Restoration Of The Van Rensselaer Cemetery

All across the country and locally, grassroots organizations and individuals are working to take care of historic cemeteries that may be found along the road, in someone’s backyard, or connected to an old church. Please join the Greenbush Historical Society Sunday, September 15, 2 PM, at the Greenbush Community Library to learn about the Restoration of the Van Rensselaer Cemetery. Chris White, a local cemetery conservator and genealogist, will tell about the restoration project at the historic cemetery located between Route 9J and Amtrak’s Boston Railway in East Greenbush.

Cemeteries are an important part of our history and the gravestones tell stories of the people who once lived and worked, usually memorialized in a few carved words. The Greenbush Historical Society under the expert guidance of Joe Ferrannini from Gravestone Matters rescued and restored the Karner Family Cemetery on Best Road in East Greenbush. Photos of that project will be displayed at the meeting. The program is free and open to the public. As seating is limited, please register with the library at 518-477-7476.
