Stephentown Historical Society to hear talk on the Berkshire Farm for Boys

Dodie Gearing will give an illustrated talk on the history of the Berkshire Farm for Boys, on Sunday, September 11, at 2:00 p.m. This Stephentown Historical Society program meeting will be held at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road, Stephentown, New York. The program is free and the building is handicapped accessible. For directions, telephone (518) 733-0010.

In 1886, Catherine Burnham’s love for children and family motivated her to persuade husband Frederick to donate 580 acres of land and buildings for what she believed was a great cause. The former Shaker community in Canaan, New York, became the Burnham Industrial Farm; a refuge for what were then called “wayward boys.” The idea that the Farm represented a family, rather than an institution, was a key factor in its success and its positive influence on the boys’ lives.

The Farm has had several names since its 1886 founding and is now Berkshire Farm Center & Services for Youth, a large state-wide social service agency serving more than 2,000 children and families every day.

Dodie Gearing, a long-time Columbia County resident, is the Town Historian for Canaan, New York, and a retired social studies teacher.

Fair Trial/Free Press Conference: Local Media, the Law, and the Next Pandemic

Informed by the reactions, restrictions, and reality of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program will explore the interplay of First Amendment rights to attend and report on trials, defamation law, protection of the press and sources, and the Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial during a fictional outbreak of “duck flu” in a rural Upstate New York county, and the ensuing government response and media fallout.

This free event is open to the public, will be livestreamed, includes a reception, and offers Continuing Legal Education credit. However, registration is required. Learn more and register online at https://bit.ly/FTFP2022

This event is co-sponsored by Albany Law’s Government Law Center, the New York Fair Trial/Free Press Conference, and the New York State Bar Association and its Committee on Media Law.
