Zion’s United Church of Christ of Taborton Summer Festival
Come join us on August 6, 2022, for our 113th annual Summer Festival and Chicken BBQ at Zion’s United Church of Christ in Taborton (741 Taborton Road in Sand Lake).
Booths are open from 11:00am to 8:00pm and music by Cannonball Express with Gloria & Punky from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
Games for both kids and adults include the fishpond, ring toss, milk bottles, duck float and dart booths. Enjoy our fair food, fancy booth and local crafters. Also, visit the raffle table with prizes from many local businesses.

Columbia HS “50s “60s Reunion
It’s back! The Columbia HS classes of the ‘50s and ‘60s will hold their annual reunion September 10 from 4 until 9 at the Phillips Road Firehouse outside pavilion. A food truck from Little Big Fatz will be on site and a cash bar with beer and wine will be available. This is a popular, informal gathering of classmates. A $5.00 donation is requested. 3rd Annual Car Wash to benefit Stephentown Historical
The Stephentown Historical Society’s 3rd Annual Car Wash on Sunday, August 14, will also include the Stephentown Federated Church’s SonShiners Garden and Bake Sale.
The Car Wash, a fund raiser for the Stephentown Historical Society, will run from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Scrub Board Laundromat and Car Wash located on Route 22 just south of Route 43 in Stephentown, NY. For a mere $20, you will get your car lovingly washed ($10) and dried ($5) by hand as well as 6 raffle tickets ($5) for a chance to win half of a 50/50 Raffle! In addition, you will find various historical albums, t-shirts, and other Historical Society merchandise and memorabilia for sale.
At the same time and location, be sure and stop at the Stephentown Federated Church’s tent for the SonShiners Garden and Bake Sale. You will find freshly baked goodies like cookies, cupcakes, and banana bread as well as vegetables picked from local gardens. The great bakers and gardeners of the SonShiners are raising funds for the Stephentown Federated Church.

Children’s Book Reading of “I Can and I Will”
The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS) will host a reading of “I Can and I Will” with children’s author Ta-Sean Murdock on Friday, July 29 at 3 p.m. at the Humane Society, located at 3 Oakland Avenue in Menands.
The book delivers the important message that kids can be anything they want to be if they put their minds to it. Dreams and aspirations are within arm’s reach with hard work and a positive mindset.

Young Musicians Music Program at the SHAC Center July 22, 6-8pm
We are promoting youth music in the community by providing a space for musicians to collaborate, rehearse, and perform.
Attention all young musicians, and their parents. SHAC is becoming the new place for youth bands to rehearse, perform and even showcase their talents. Come out and take time to see the rehearsal and performance spaces and learn how to sign up for summer band practice times. The space includes a PA system including speakers, a mixer, microphones and stands, and necessary cables.
Music opportunities will include:
Rehearsal/jam space for young musicians two afternoons a week to rehearse or just jam together. We can accommodate one band at a time so advanced sign up will be required.
Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments to the sessions although we we have two pianos and may have some other instruments available on site as we move forward.
Friday night open mic performances: where youth musicians can showcase their talents.
There will be performance opportunities about once a month for bands to perform live in front of an audience on either the Sky High Community Center’s indoor or outdoor stage.
Creative Writing Program for Young People with Val Kavanaugh

Summer is the perfect time for kids to take some time off from their devices and learn ways to develop and increase their creative writing skills. Each class will have a specific, fun, writing experience that will include learning about and practicing short story writing, poetry, script writing and opinion pieces – a potpourri of the many types of contemporary writing. Participants will have the opportunity to critique and develop their writing skills. The instructor will explain the value and the way critique should be handled.

Hoosac Tunnel talk at Stephentown Historical Society
Charles Cahoon will give an illustrated talk on the Hoosac Tunnel, on Sunday, August 7, at 2:00 p.m. The tunnel, a straight run of 4.75 miles between North Adams and the Massachusetts town of Florida, is the longest active railroad tunnel east of the Rockies. This Stephentown Historical Society program meeting will be held at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road, Stephentown, New York. The construction of the Hoosac Tunnel produced a shorter and lower elevation rail route from Boston to Troy, New York. The work took nearly 25 years and cost the lives of 196 workers. Drilling and removal of two million tons of rock required innovative surveying and engineering methods and 21 million dollars. The first train chugged through the tunnel in 1875. Both freight and passenger service used this route. It currently carries eight freight trains a day.
Cahoon is the president of the North Adams Historical Society dba North Adams Museum of History and Science. He has been promoting the history of the tunnel since 1971 when the town of North Adams began preparing the centennial celebration of the tunnel’s completion.
2nd Annual Motorcycle Ride to Benefit Veterans & First Responders
The 2nd Annual PTSD & SERVICE DOG AWARENESS RIDE, organized by local non-profit Ibi Semper Training, Inc., will be held on Saturday, August 6th in Troy, NY.
“This event promises to be outstanding with vendors, raffles, food, and of course, a scenic ride to bring awareness and support to our local Veterans and First Responders with Post Traumatic Stress injuries and their PTSD Service Dogs,” shared Sonya Ward, organization founder. She further explained,
“Engaging, improving, and helping Veterans and First Responders with PTSD and rescue dogs is our mission, and this fundraiser directly supports training the teams and covers the cost of dog adoptions.”
Pre-registration is now open and recommended for $20 per rider and $10 for passengers, though onsite registration is also welcomed that morning at 10 am. Kick starts up (KSU) at 12 noon, taking place at Brunswick Harley Davidson, 1130 Hoosick Road in Troy. The ride will conclude at Brunswick BBQ & Brew, 3925 NY-2 in Troy. Both local businesses have been long time supporters of this organization and event.
Crazytrain DJ will provide this year’s entertainment.

Back Together Again: The Music of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway
Dorset, VT – Dorset Theatre Festival’s 45th Season of professional summer theatre will continue with Back Together Again: The Music of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, a new concert featuring Christina Acosta Robinson and Ken Robinson.
Friends since their college days, Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway soared to the top of the Billboard charts as one of the most cherished and mellifluous duos in music history, recording some of the most adored duets of all time like, “Where Is The Love” and “The Closer I Get To You.” Now, Broadway performers, and husband-and-wife, Christina Acosta Robinson and Ken Robinson, bring the love together again for a concert of the pair’s iconic hits that inspired a generation.
Husband and wife offstage, Christina Acosta Robinson and Ken Robinson shared the Broadway stage two years ago in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Ken Robinson’s other Broadway credits include The Color Purple, Memphis, and Baby It’s You! He has appeared at theatres across the country, including Off-Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop, Cincinnati Playhouse, Contemporary American Theater Festival, Cleveland Playhouse, and the Alliance Theatre. Christina Acosta Robinson has appeared at Yale Repertory Theatre, Two River Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Both Robinsons graduated from Yale School of Drama.
Back Together Again, which runs about 85 minutes with no intermission, begins performances on Wednesday, July 27 and runs through Sunday, August 7. Book Nook News at Transfiguration Parish
Thank you to everyone who made the Book Nook’s $5 Bag Sale during the parish-wide garage sale, so successful! We sent a lot of books out the door, and raised $920 for the church. Thank you so much.
The last weekend for the $5 Bag sale will end on Saturday, July 30 from 9-12. Please stop by and fill a bag of books, CD’s and DVD’s for just $5. Still a great selection available.
We will again start taking donations of clean, lightly-read books on Saturday, August 6, when the regular Book Nook will be open again. The Book Nook is located in Speigletown at Transfiguration Parish on Hillview Road.

The SVFD’s Car Show Is Happening On Saturday, August 20, 2022
Cruise on down to Stephentown on Saturday, August 20 to check out the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department’s Car Show from 10 AM – 2 PM.
Antique Autos, Classic Cars, Antique Tractors, Hot Rods, and Antique Fire Trucks! Plus food, vendors, and raffles. There is something for everyone to enjoy.
The entry fee for vehicles is just $10. Door prizes and trophies will be awarded. Walk-ins and spectators enter for free, but a donation is suggested.

Young Peacemakers Week
Are you interested in contributing to a peaceful world? If the answer is yes, help your child (grades 2-8) learn about peace within their own self, their community, and the global stage.
Young Peacemakers Week, held at the Friends Meetinghouse at 727 Madison Ave. in Albany, is set up to do exactly that during the week of August 22-26, 2022. The hours are 1:30-6:30, with a family meal shared from 5:30-6:30, accompanied by a family activity and singing. Peacemaking skills are learned in the context of typical summer day camp activities, including arts and crafts, music, non-competitive games, and nature-related fun.
The cost is pay-as-you-can, and no child will be turned away for inability to pay.
