North Greenbush Memorial Day Parade

Town Supervisor Joe Bott is proud to announce the Town of North Greenbush Annual Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 30th. The parade kicks off at 1:30 pm from Town Hall. The streets of Wynantskill will once again be lined with our residents as we remember our men and women who died while serving in the United States military. The parade will be lead by our local veterans who continue to work to ensure the fallen members of our military are remembered and honored. We are excited to once again have our veterans lead the parade and have received an overwhelming response by local organizations who also want to march in the parade and pay tribute on this important day. We have several marching bands who will provide musical entertainment while marching down the parade route which starts at Town Hall on Main Avenue, to Route 150, to Marion Avenue, to Brookside Avenue, to Main Ave and ending at Town Hall. Residents in these areas should plan for road closures along the parade route. Following the parade, we will hold a moving ceremony honoring our fallen soldiers in front of Town Hall. This is sure to be our biggest parade ever. If you have any questions or are interested in participating, please contact the supervisor’s office at (518) 283-5313, x5. We look forward to seeing you on Memorial Day.

Historical Society Gala May 22nd

The Sand Lake Historical Society will hold its annual gala, “An Afternoon with Len Tantillo”, Sunday May 22nd, from 1 to 5 pm at Tighe’s Bistro Americain (TBA), 2703 NY 43, Averill Park.

Our featured presenter this year is renowned artist Len Tantillo, whose work has appeared internationally in exhibitions, publications and film documentaries. He is the author of four books and recipient of two honorary degrees. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists. His art is included in the collections of the Fenimore Art Museum, the Minnesota Museum of Marine Art, numerous historical societies, and corporate and private collections in the USA and abroad. He has produced over 300 paintings and drawings of New York State history. In 2016, he was elected a Fellow of the New York Academy of History. In addition to other raffles and auction items, the SLHS will offer a signed and framed print of Mr. Tantillo’s — “Autumn Hills” — for auction.

The structure housing TBA was built circa 1845 as “Mechanics Hall” to house workers at Albert R. Fox’s Rensselaer Glass Works. After the glass works closed for good in 1853, the building became a hotel and has served as a bar and restaurant almost continually for most of the past 165+ years. The SLHS expresses its gratitude to our hosts, Kevin and Janice Tighe, for bringing the old Glass Lake Inn back to life!

This is the Society’s principal fundraiser for the year. Proceeds support SLHS programs, student scholarships, collection management, and other activities. Food will consist of appetizers, including quiches, finger foods, cheese and fruit platters. And there will be a cash bar. Tickets and information are available at the SLHS website – http://sandlakehistory.org/.

We look forward to seeing you on the 22nd!

The Gilded Age Arrives Again in Troy, NY

Please join the Greenbush Historical Society on May 22, 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library for an illustrated lecture on how Troy’s 19th century architecture became an integral backdrop to the Julian Fellows HBO series “The Gilded Age.”

Kathryn Sheehan, Rensselaer County and Troy City Historian, worked with the location scouts and production designer on locations throughout the city and provided information on how Troy appeared during the Gilded Age. Sheehan’s extensive knowledge of Troy history was invaluable in identifying major players at the time that represented “old” money and “new” money. This entertaining program will include behind the scenes stories that happened during the filming of season one.

We look forward to welcoming old and new friends back to the Greenbush Historical Society as we resume regular programs and events. The program is free and open to the public. Because seating is limited, please call the library at 518-477-7476 to register.
