Who Will Be Mr. AP 2019?

Over the past decade, the Averill Park Senior Class has put on a proud and memorable tradition known as the Mr. AP competition.
The first Mr. AP was Adam Polonski in 2004, and most recently, in 2018, Adam Johnson took home the title. This “variety show” provides contestants with an opportunity to demonstrate their best qualities as well as challenge themselves out of their comfort zone. During the event, each contestant is tasked to showcase a talent, participate in student-choreographed dance numbers, and answer character-based questions. The judges have the even harder task of determining which contestant best personifies the spirit of Averill Park High School. While there will be plenty of laughs, there is a lot more to the Mr. AP competition than just the immense comedic tone portrayed throughout the night. It’s an event that promotes volunteerism within the community and a cohesiveness of the senior class. This year’s contestants are: Austin Bradway, Martin Bond, Anthony Carucci, Henry Crawley, Matthew Gaston, Thomas Hacker, Nathaniel Jamison, Matthew Kenneally, Nicholas Maggio, and Cole Swahlan.

Easter Egg Hunt in the Village of Nassau
The Village of Nassau Youth Committee is pleased to announce that the annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place on Saturday, April 13, 11am at the Village Commons located on John Street. Come join the Easter Bunny who will make his appearance bringing candy-filled eggs and fun for children of all ages. Don’t forget to bring your baskets and cameras for pictures with the Bunny! The “Hunt” starts promptly at 11am, so plan on arriving at the Commons 10 minutes earlier. There is no charge for the festivities.

First Baptist Church Rensselaer hosts: Albany Teen and Adult Challenge on Sunday, April 7th, at 11:00 AM.

Tiffany Windows topic at April SL Historical Society meeting
April 9: Tom Carroll, Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway Senior Scholar, will talk about Tiffany windows around the Capital Region. The City of Troy is estimated to have more Tiffany windows per square mile than anywhere else in the world! Tom will take a look at the life of Louis Comfort Tiffany and discuss the history of his one-of-a-kind, legendary techniques (and those of his studio’s other artisans) that led to great success in stained glass business. Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. Rain or shine.
Volunteers are needed for this community clean-up effort. Meet at the NYS DEC public access parking lot on NYS Route 7 just before the causeway over the reservoir. Bring gloves and wear weather appropriate shoes and clothing. Garbage bags are provided.
The 6.5 mile-long Tomhannock Reservoir provides drinking water to 135,000 people living in nine communities in three counties. This annual event is sponsored by the Rensselaer Land Trust (RLT), City of Troy, and NYSDEC. A big part of RLT’s mission is watershed protection and protecting water quality is part of the equation; which supplies so many people with drinking water in our region.

Once parked, a hay wagon ride will take you through some of the fields at Kinderhook Creek Farm. Through interactive demonstrations you will learn about the different crops (such as hay, grain, sweet corn, and the many vegetables) grown on this farm. You will also see how their farm products get to market and eventually to your family’s table. Also, be sure to visit exhibits set up by local organizations & businesses, experience the equipment used on the farm by the farmers and see the 4-H Club sponsored petting zoo. The 8th annual Town of Nassau Tailgate Sale will be held on April 27th from 8:00am until noon at the Highway Department, 599 Central Nassau Road, County Road 16 in East Nassau. Children’s “Easter Is Coming” Celebration
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Poestenkill, 772 Route 351, Poestenkill, NY 12140, will host a Children’s “Easter is Coming” Celebration for kids in and around our area on Saturday, April 20, 2019. We will begin at 1pm to 2:30 pm at the church. All children are welcome.

Are you interested in learning the skill of archery? Learn how to use a bow and arrow in a controlled environment with a focus on skill building and safety. This beginner’s class is a prerequisite to participating in future 4H archery programs. Members who have previously completed the required safety course through 4H can arrive at 2pm for target practice. Traveling through Rensselaer County in the 19th Century
The Pittstown Historical Society Has Planned the Following Event: “From Plank Roads to Horse Boat Ferries: Traveling through Rensselaer County in the 19th Century” is the title of a fascinating lecture to be presented on April 18th at 7:30 PM at the Pittstown town hall in Tomhannock (97 Tomhannock Road). Historian Kathy Sheehan will give an illustrated talk featuring maps, letters and photographs from the Rensselaer County Historical Society’s archives. Sheehan will explore the early turnpikes, plank roads, covered bridges and the stories of crossing the Hudson River, our main highway to the outside world. Sheehan, who tirelessly documents Rensselaer County history, serves as Rensselaer County Historian and Troy City Historian as well as Registrar of the Rensselaer County Historical Society.

Stephentown Historical Soc. to Hear About Piping College in Renss. Co.
Donald F. Lindsay will tell “How America’s First Piping School Came to Rensselaer County” on Sunday, April 7, at 2:00 p.m. at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting. Learn about the Invermark College of Piping and how it has turned out accomplished bagpipers and pipe bands for nearly 60 years. The event will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road (corner of Garfield Road), Stephentown, NY. The program is free, and the building is handicapped accessible. Donald F. Lindsay is director of the Invermark College of Piping, which was founded in 1961 by his father, James F. Lindsay. At age twelve Donald began taking instruction in piping along with his father, who had fond memories of his Scottish childhood home. When James searched for a location for a piping school, he found an 80-acre farm in the rolling hills of Petersburgh, NY, that reminded him of that Scottish landscape. Donald will tell of the building and growth of the school whose name was inspired by the ancient piping “colleges” of Scotland. He will also play a few tunes, some composed for Invermark and Petersburg.

Join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, April 14, 2019, 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library, for Jim Cochran’s presentation, “Military Ballooning in the Civil War.” After a brief international history of ballooning, Jim will focus on military ballooning in the United States, starting with an interesting flight in Albany in 1833. Three aeronautics, including one from Troy, NY, were most responsible for the U.S. Balloon Corps and each competed to be its commander. The interesting role of balloon reconnaissance during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862-1863 will be examined. In many ways, the Civil War Balloon Corps can be called the first U.S. Air Force. Our guest speaker Jim Cochran is a retired literature teacher and amateur United States historian who is very interested in the Civil War and local historic people, places, and events. Spring Garage and Rummage Sale
Friday and Saturday, April 26th and 27th, the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church will welcome the season with our annual Spring Garage and Rummage Sale at 175 Fifth Avenue.
The sale will take place at church from 9am – 5pm, Friday; and 9am – 12pm on Saturday.
Donated items can be dropped off at the church 9am-7pm, April 23rd, 24th and 25th. Please no exercise equipment or heavy TVs. 518.584.3720
S.A.G.E.S. Garage Sale
Planning for the 3rd Annual S.A.G.E.S. Garage Sale is underway! We are currently looking for donations of items to sell. We will take just about anything that can be easily moved by high school students. You can drop your donations off at the Averill Park High School Main Office or contact us at sages@nullapcsd.org to schedule a drop off time. Please make sure items are clean and free of mold. Proceeds from the sale will be given to local charities within our school community. Please note, any unsold items will be given to another charity, you will not get items back. The sale will be Friday, May 31st, from 9-5 in the Averill Park High School Athletic Complex.
Community Garage Sale
Third Presbyterian Church (115 Winter Street, Troy) will be hosting a Community Garage Sale on June 1st from 9-2. So, as you do your spring cleaning, save the treasures you no longer need and plan to join us on the 1st. There is no cost to participate. Just bring a table and your treasures to sell.
Food and beverages will be available throughout the day. There is no charge for the food, but donations will be accepted and used to provide backpacks and school supplies for families in need in our community.

Brunswick Church Community Tent Sale
Brunswick Church is sponsoring a Tent & Bake Sale on Friday, April 12 – noon to 6 pm; and Saturday, April 13 – 9 am to 3 pm. The proceeds of this sale will benefit the Regional Food Bank’s Backpack Program. The sale will be held at Brunswick Church, Rt. 351 and White Church Rd. Items may be donated for the sale April 11 – 2 pm to 7 pm, and April 12 – 8 am to noon.
