H Jay Dinshah & the Modern Vegan Movement

LAST IN SERIES – #8: Books

Throughout the 40+ years that Jay Dinshah helped people understand the plight of animals used for food and commodities, he brought books. From just a handful to hundreds, these tools for living represented a growing community of vegan adherents and an increasing number of experts in the field.

Having viewed the savage ways in which humans sustain their lives, Jay implored people to come Out of the Jungle (OOTJ, 1967), the title of his book elucidating the path to becoming vegan. Easy recipes had been presented in another book published by the American Vegan Society, The Vegan Kitchen (1965) by his wife Freya which had strong sales across the U.S. until eclipsed by an avalanche of vegan cookbooks 35 years later.

OOTJ had inspired founders of the Gentle World vegan community, and they turned to Jay for help in publishing their gourmet Cookbook for People Who Love Animals (1981). In the 1980s and 90s, this book saw spectacular sales in the burgeoning animal rights movement and in general distribution.

Book sales were always an important highlight of meetings and conventions. Books by speakers, and titles assembled from many publishers, fell into vegetarian/vegan themed categories: philosophy, health, nutrition, animal rights, environment (including gardening without by-products from animal agriculture), history, books about and for children, and cookbooks. The bookstore at the American Vegan Society headquarters in Malaga New Jersey assembled the biggest collection of its kind in the world. Jay valued books for their information, and he was fortunate to know many authors as dear friends.

Jay’s influence on individuals and the modern vegan movement is put forth in Powerful Vegan Messages (2014); this book includes writings by Jay and testimonials collected by daughter Anne Dinshah. Jay Dinshah (1933-2000) was a dynamo who promoted a vision for a more compassionate world. He can be viewed on the Powerful Vegan Messages You Tube channel.
