Glendora Vegetarian Club

Paths to Peace – Jay Dinshah experimented with various in-house printing options in the early years. The American Vegan Society’s first book, Here’s Harmlessness, an Anthology of Ahimsa, is a collection of essays about veganism and compassion. It was published in February of 1964, hand printed, collated, and stapled.

The fourth American Vegan Society convention, New York City April 16 1964, featured old guard speakers from the physical culture and naturopathic movements, Dr Jesse Mercer Gehman (1901-1975) and Dr Robert Anderson–age 80 at the time.  Professor Henry Bailey Stephens (1891-1976), author of The Recovery of Culture (1949), postulated that early humans made the mistake of changing from vegetarianism to flesh-eating and that soil erosion, starving peoples, and war is the result.

On May 14 1964 The Vineland Times Journal ran a cover photo and story about Peace Pilgrim (1908-1981) who was nearing completion of a 25,000 mile pilgrimage for world peace. Speaking at AVS headquarters in Malaga NJ, she talked about creating peace in ourselves, the community, and in the world. “This is the way of peace. Overcome evil with good, falsehood with truth, and hatred with love.” On conflict, “Have as your objective the resolving of the conflict, not the gaining of advantage.”

Although DuPont introduced Corfam, its synthetic poromeric shoe leather, in 1964, Peace Pilgrim and Jay Dinshah continued to wear blue canvas footwear.

A letter dated August 4 1964, postmarked Lambarene, Gabon, Africa, was received from Dr Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965.) In it he said, “the idea of ahimsa contains the idea of reverence for life,” and shared that he was a friend of Gandhi (1869-1948.)  The American Vegan Society is guided by the principles of ahimsa (non-violence/not hurting) and reverence for life. Both Gandhi and Schweitzer are honored for their vegetarianism, compassionate actions, and for their service to the world.

Glendora Vegetarian Club

Glendora, why did you cancel your appointment to remove a cataract and replace the cornea in your left eye? I’m 93 years old, and this body has never had an operation or procedure of any kind. It has always taken care of itself. I feel it should be left its independence. The second reason is that this operation would cost $39,000. This is bizarre. Things are out of hand. I do not have to pay it, but somebody does. This is grotesque. Thirdly, everything these doctors know about the eye they learned from torturing kittens and puppies and then throwing them in the wastebasket. In addition, I don’t like to leave my home, Happy House 3. I feel very secure here, and leaving here is taking a chance. My friends are sure the operation will succeed, but it is still a roll of the dice.

My nephew asked me, “Wouldn’t you like to be independent and be able to take care of yourself?” I told him that I like having people wait on me hand and foot.

After I told my friends and asked for their understanding, I called the doctor’s office, penitent that I had gone back on my word to them. They said, “Fine, let us know if we can help you in any other way.” They were like an owl. They didn’t give a hoot!

I cannot convey to you the enormous relief I feel to be free of medical worry and how absolved I was preserving my faith in my body to heal anything.

The Glendora Vegetarian Club will meet August 7th. Call 518-931-0266 for details.
