The Poestenkill Bread of Life Food Pantry expresses our sincere appreciation to all those Town Residents who graciously donated to our Pantry on Election Day at the Fire House. Your donations enable us to provide complete Thanksgiving & Christmas Holiday Meal Baskets to Poestenkill families experiencing economic difficulties. Your generosity also allows the Bread of Life Pantry to function as a viable local provider of basic nutritional food supplies & related items throughout the year to Town Residents in need.

Wynantskill Fire Department Dedicates New Utility 42
On Tuesday, October 29th, 2019, the Wynantskill Fire Department dedicated their newest piece of apparatus, Utility 42, to deceased member Tom Goyer. Tom lived his entire life in Wynantskill – spending 45 of those years volunteering with the Wynantskill Fire Department. Tom was the driving force behind the purchase of the first district-owned fire police vehicle, and original Utility 42, a 1997 Dodge van. The new Utility 42 is a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado.
In addition to serving our town through the fire department, Tom married his wife, Judy, in 1965 and raised a family. He also served in the United States Navy, and was a long time usher at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Troy, NY. A heartfelt thank you to all the members of the Goyer family, members of the American Legion Post 1489, members of the North Greenbush Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners, and Deacon Paul Carney of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Troy,NY, for joining us on this special occasion.

Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis along with Castleton Road Racing Commission Support the Anchor
Sara Westcott, Race Director of the Ken Morgan Memorial Clove Run, proudly presented a check in the amount of $4,450 to Paula Sancomb, manager of The Anchor, Northeast Regional Food Pantry on November 11th, 2019. The Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis, in collaboration with the Castleton Road Racing Commission, was proud to sponsor / host the annual Clove Run. The 2019 event, held in August, was well-attended and supported by many local businesses. That support results in the ability to provide much-needed financial aid to The Anchor, Castleton’s food pantry.

Fort Crailo DAR Chapter Good Citizen Awards
November 9, 2019, The Fort Crailo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had their Good Citizen Essay Award ceremony at the Rensselaer Public Library. Chairmen Doris Roberts presented the award to Andrew Kretzschmar a senior from Rensselaer High. Congratulations to our other winners Taylor Demers a senior from Columbia High School, Makaila Maier a senior from Maple Hill High School and Andrew Gorman a senior from Averill Park High School. Taylor Demers will be moving on to the district level competition.
The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.

Friends of Rensselaer Library was a success
The Friends would like to thank everyone who donated bake goods and all those folks who bought goodies from our Election Day Bake Sale. We had 2 locations, one at City Hall and the other at the Rensselaer Senior Center. Both locations saw an increase in participation and profits this year and we look forward to next years Election Day Bake Sale. Our sincere thanks to all the workers, bakers and people who bought baked goods.

Rensselaer County 4-H Represented at Eastern National 4-H Roundup
Rensselaer County was represented at the Eastern National 4-H Roundup, held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky. Brigham Logue of Johnsonville spent some fast paced days in Kentucky as part of the educational trip associated with being on the New York State 4-H Horse Communications Team. In addition to the Horse Communications Team, Brigham traveled with all the other New York National Team members from across the state for Horse Judging, Hippology and Horse Bowl. It was a great experience according to Brigham and as exciting as the contest day was, he really appreciated the day spent in and around Lexington where the New York delegation went to the Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (KESMARC), Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, Kentucky Horse Park and Keeneland. Members were able to explore careers and businesses pivotal to the Equine Industry. The New York Educational Teams represented our state very well. The Hippology Team placed 5th and Horse Bowl Team 3rd overall with three members placing in the top 10. The members of the Horse Communications Team all placed in the top 10 in their respective divisions. Our New York public speaker Carissa Hilsher from Allegany County placed 10th , Team presenters Annie Born of Oneida County and Laura Bagley of Yates County placed 3rd and Brigham placed 5th for Individual presenters. As a result, the New York State Horse Communications Team placed 2nd overall and brought home plates declaring them the Reserve Champion Horse Communications Team. A hearty thanks goes out to the Horse Communications Team Coach, Sarah Bagley, New York State 4-H Horse Program, volunteers, parents and local supporters of our 4-H program. Harvest Connection App Rolled Out
On Wednesday, November 20th Engel’s Acres in Brunswick hosted the roll out of the Harvest Connection App. This farm store was bursting at the seams with interested officials, residents and fellow farmers. The App is a tool developed through a Farm to Market USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) grant that Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Rensselaer County received. With help from Spiral Design, CCE was able to see the app come to life. Preceding the app was the Harvest Connection website which was initiated years ago under the direction of the Rensselaer County office of Economic Development and Planning which included only specialty crop agriculture products. The Farm to Market USDA grant allowed CCE of Rensselaer County to expand the Harvest Connection website to include all agriculture products. The Harvest Connection website is designed to be a bridge for consumers to source local, fresh and nutritious farm products. The app which was rolled out this month is one more tool to help drive consumers to the website and ultimately to farms and local farmer’s markets with the goal of increasing farm gate sales. Harvest Connection includes farms from Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady and Washington Counties. Use of the app will allow consumers to quickly search with their mobile devices where local product, closest to them, can be found. Harvest Connection includes a consumer enrollment that provides electronic newsletters that contains recipes, growing trends, seasonal tips and help consumers understand better how food and fiber is grown or raised. Harvest Connection will continue to enroll farms and consumers. The app can be downloaded for free at the Apple Store and Google Play Store. New Electric Car Charging Station in Sand Lake
There is a new electric car charging station at the Sand Lake Town Hall in the lower parking lot. The street address is 8428 Miller Hill Rd, in Sand Lake (12153)! If you’re traveling via the route 43 corridor, It is the only charging station on the way to Jiminy Peak in MA. We are very grateful for the grant we received to provide this service -at no cost to the town.

Do you need help with substance use issues? Are you interested in volunteering for the helpline? The Rensselaer County Recovery Helpline offers information, local resources, and referrals for individuals and their families regarding substance use issues. The toll-free line is available 7 days a week from 9am-9pm. Each volunteer chooses shifts of 4 hours at a time to be on-call. When someone calls the number, a volunteer answers on their own smartphone, and can enter information to a database on their own computer, allowing for easy and quick access to resources. The information is sent to one of the 9 leaders, who will then assist the caller.
