Disaster Mental Health Psychological First Aid

Everyone reacts differently to trauma. Emotional distress is not always as visible as physical injury, but it is just as painful and debilitating. After a disaster or traumatic event, the earlier you can assist someone in gaining a sense of calm and meeting their immediate needs, the better they can cope throughout their state of crisis.  Join us at the Troy Public Library on Monday, August 19th at 5:00 pm for this Psychological First Aid training workshop that will give you the tools to make this possible.

Avoiding long term struggles such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or unhealthy coping skills such as substance abuse, is the goal of this training. Recognizing when other people – caregivers, first responders or even ourselves may need a little extra help is also part of the discussion. This method does not require a professional to carry out the steps of care. The process can be learned and employed by anyone who can make direct contact with individuals affected by crisis. A resilient community is a healthy community! All participants will receive a certificate of completion. (This is a 2.5 hour training including hands on activities, video demonstrations and interactive scenarios with role play). Jennifer Lee is a certified instructor of Psychological First Aid (PFA) from the NYS Office of Mental Health, NYS Department of Health, UAlbany CPHP (Center of Public Health Preparedness) and UAlbany University at Albany School of Public Health. To register go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SignUpTL

Pinpointing Where Your Ancestors Lived in Ireland at the Troy Public Library

The Troy Irish Genealogy Society and Old Friends Genealogy will be at the Troy Public Library on Sunday, September 15th at 1:30PM, to present their “Pinpointing Where Your Ancestors Lived in Ireland” program.

This program focuses on how one can use what is called a “shotgun approach” to finding records for your Irish ancestors who emigrated to the U.S. or elsewhere. The stage is set by talking about some critical U.S. records, (e.g. death certificates, cemetery plot cards, family bibles). Then the focus will be on the following types of Irish records:

• Personal Records: Both Roman Catholic and Protestant baptism and marriage records, 1901 and 1911 Censuses. Examples from several websites including: Roots Ireland, Irish Genealogy, Find My Past and the Ireland National Archives.

• Land Valuation Records: Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith’s Valuation (include historic maps and modern overlay maps)

• Ireland Cemetery Records: Historic Graves and other websites

• Historic Newspapers, Historical Societies and Libraries.

In addition to talking about all of the resources available in Ireland to “chase” one’s Irish ancestors, included will be lots of photos from trips to Ireland, talk about driving in Ireland and staying at B&Bs, and of course, some of that famous Irish humor along the way.

This program is free and open to the public. Call the library at 518-274-7071 or go online to www.thetroylibrary.org to reserve your spot. The Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy, New York.

French Film Screening at The Troy Public Library

Join us at the Troy Public Library on Saturday, September 21st at 1PM as the La Fédération franco-américaine du New York begins their 2019-20 film series with the screening of the film “The Jewish Cardinal.” (NR 96 min.)

The Jewish Cardinal tells the amazing true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger, the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, who maintained his cultural identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism and joining the priesthood. Lustiger was appointed Archbishop of Paris by Pope Jean Paul II – and found a new platform to celebrate his dual identity as a Catholic Jew. When nuns plan to build a convent within the walls of Auschwitz, Lustiger may be forced at last to choose his side.
