Michael Barrett will present the intriguing details of the life of Russell Sage. A quintessential Robber Baron of the Gilded Age, Sage was most likely the wealthiest man in America at the time of his death in 1906. His wife’s reaction to his passing is one of the greatest stories of philanthropic retaliation in American history. Light refreshments will follow.

Presented by the Friends of Oakwood, a 501(c)3 non-profit volunteer group working to support the preservation and maintenance of the non-sectarian chapel and grounds of Troy’s still-active historic 19th C. Oakwood Cemetery. New members are always welcome.

Wild Women Of Oakwood: North of the Ponds

Saturday August 10th at 9am the Friends of Oakwood presents a tour in a new area of the cemetery. Troy City and Rensselaer County Historian Kathy Sheehan will lead us to the grave-sites of some of the women who were the movers and shakers of our county history. These women were a force to contend with – suffragists, philanthropists and more.

On Thursday August 15th at 6:00pm the Friends of Oakwood will present their next Full Moon Twilight Tour. Led by Oakwood volunteer Heidi Klinowski, we will look inside the opulent Gardner Earl Chapel, to take advantage of the western sunlight streaming through the vibrant stained glass windows.

Then we will walk to the monuments of some of Oakwood’s interesting ‘residents’, where we’ll hear their stories.  Uncle Sam’s grave and the panoramic overlook at sunset are included highlights of this walking tour. And of course we’ll hope for clear views of the full moon.

On Saturday August 17th at 9am Oakwood presents a NEW tour, Millers, Merchants and Collar Makers. Troy and Rensselaer County Historian Kathy Sheehan will lead us on a walking tour to the gravesites of some of the workers of Troy’s 19th and early 20th C. She will tell us about their jobs and the kinds of contributions they made to our area. Hannah Lord Montague is sure to be included. Do you know why?

Tuesday August 20th at 6pm is the date for Oakwood’s popular FAMILY SCAVENGER HUNT. Just $10. per Family, payable on arrival. We will search a new area this year with clues for readers and non-readers. Prizes go to all children who complete the hunt. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the chapel flagpole and we will caravan to the hunt site. In case of rain, we will call if your reservation includes your phone number.

Brunswick Cares Food Pantry Kid’s Summer Meal Bags

The Brunswick Cares Food Pantry is offering “Kids Meal Bags” this summer to our registered families beginning Saturday, June 22nd, and continuing through Saturday, August 31st.

Kids Meal Bags will be distributed to families of school age children during our normal pantry hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Limit one bag per child per week.

Our Pantry is located at Brunswick Church, 42 White Church Lane, Troy, NY 12180.

Troy’s Annual Armenian Festival

Holy Cross Armenian Apostolic Church will have its Annual Troy’s Armenian Festival Sat Sept 7 12pm – 8pm and Sun Sept 8 12pm – 4pm. There will be delicious Armenian food and pastries, Games for the kids, Armenian music, and live performance by our local Armenian Dance Group. Come join us for a day full of Food, Fun and Games. Literacy Volunteers Are Needed!

Troy, N.Y.:  A Tutor Training Workshop will begin in Troy on September 9th. To learn about tutoring and many other ways to help, attend a free Volunteer Opportunities Information Session (pick one date):  Wednesday, August 14, 12:00-1:00 p.m.; or Monday, August 26, 6:00-7:00 p.m. All meetings will be held at the LVORC office, 71 First Street, Third Floor, Troy, N.Y.

LVORC is looking for volunteer tutors to be paired with adult learners, reading mentors for Everybody WINS! Power Lunch, math and computer tutors, and events volunteers.
