Last week saw the final days before spring sports matches officially start up. The boys Varsity tennis team took on Queensbury in a scrimmage on 3/20 and won 8-1. Singles wins came from Eric Schuman, Max Wilson, Dylan Hansen, Tristan Shelhamer and Xander Michaels. The doubles teams of Logan Bielawski/Ryan Baker, Nico Donvito/Keston Holohan and Nixon Kwok/Nate Jamison all also won for AP.
Averill Park basketball players Zach Price, Kelsey Wood and Amelia Wood all received Suburban Council Honors for their play. Zach Price and Amelia Wood were each named to the Suburban Council 2nd team. Kelsey Wood was awarded to the Suburban Council 1st team.
Make sure to support AP’s athletes as spring sports start up. Go Warriors!
This week’s scholar athlete is Abby Vandenberg. Abby is a two-time captain on the Varsity Lacrosse team. Abby has played lacrosse for six years after she started playing the sport in seventh grade. Abby’s favorite aspect of lacrosse is the opportunity she has to bond with her team. This year, Abby hopes that she and her team will make it to sectionals. In order to achieve this goal, Abby spent her offseason running in cross country and playing for a Capitaland indoor lacrosse team. Additionally, Abby said, “I am coming back from an injury, so I am preparing myself to work twice as hard to make up for the time I have lost.” Surely, Abby’s offseason efforts will allow her to succeed on the field, even as she returns from an injury.
Abby does not only work hard in her sport, but in her academics as well. Abby has maintained a GPA of 98.4 throughout high school. She has taken numerous Advanced Placement and Honors courses; this year alone she is taking AP Calculus, AP Biology, and AP English.
Outside of her classes, Abby spends her time working as the Senior Class President and participating in Student Government and the Journalism Club. Abby’s efforts were recognized last Fall when she was inducted into the National Honor Society. Additionally, she was awarded the Scholar Athlete award at the Lacrosse banquet last year.
Abby would like to thank her teammates for always supporting her through her years in high school. She would also like to thank her role model, her father, “he is very successful and
hardworking. I admire is drive and dedication to everything he does.”
Abby wishes to leave a final thought for younger athletes, “Don’t quit now, it will all pay off.”
We all wish Abby the best as she finishes her senior year and prepares to enter college.
