Albany-Tula Alliance seeks entries for Annual Essay Contest
CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Albany-Tula Alliance is seeking Capital Region students from high school to first-year college to research and write an essay expanding on what young adults, specifically in Russia and the U.S., are doing to help mitigate climate change.
Essays must contain at least 1500 words and include a bibliography. The deadline for registration and essay submission is March 1, 2020. The writer of the winning essay will win $1,000; second prize is $500, and third prize is $250.
For the past quarter-century, the Albany-Tula Alliance has been a cooperative sister city initiative between New York’s Capital Region and the Tula Region in Russia. Through the years there have been many cultural, educational, scientific and business exchanges between the two. Even though government relations remain strained the friends of the Alliance continue to work together as citizen diplomats.

Center Brunswick United Methodist Church Announces Financial Scholarship for 2020
TROY – The Finance Committee of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church has announced that it will award $500 to a student to be selected from the Tamarac High School Class of 2020. The money may be used for any type of expenses related to further education. Students do not have to belong to this Church, any other church or religion to be eligible for this award.
Interested students must apply for this award no later than March 1, 2020. The application can be obtained from the school’s guidance department or from our website at (www.CenterBrunswickUMC.company).
This award is given in memory of Harold and Mabel Keyes through a trust funded by their last will and testament. Mabel taught in the Brunswick schools and continued teaching Sunday School at Center Brunswick UMC for many years after she retired. Through this award, her love of helping young people learn and grow will continue to reach the youth of our community.

CAPITAL DISTRICT – Fresh Air summers are filled with children running through the sprinklers in the grass, gazing at star-filled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in the Albany area, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program.
The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. First time Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 13 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips.

The Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake Fundraising Drive
SAND LAKE – The Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake is supporting a charity fundraising drive within the Averill Park Central School District to benefit the Capital Region’s Ronald Mc Donald House. The drive will run from now until October 31st with the goal to collect enough pull tabs from soda, beer, soups and pet food cans to fill a school bus!
We ask that parents of our school children and other interested citizens join this effort by removing and collecting as many pull tabs as possible during the months ahead and taking them to the office of one of our three elementary schools, the Algonquin Middle School’s office or to the office at the Averill Park High School.

We are a registered not-for- profit organization with the NYS Dept of Charities. All names and addresses sent to us are confidential and not shared with others than our volunteers. We have now been in business for ten years and have sent more than 100,000 boxes of books. Culinary historian Lavada Nahon compares the unique food culture of colonial New York with that of colonial Virginia as it is depicted in “Fire and Freedom: Food and Enslavement in Early America,” a National Library of Medicine traveling exhibition on view through Feb. 15 in the college’s Marvin Library Learning Commons. The exhibit explores food in colonial America and how it was used to benefit or punish people depending upon their class, race or gender.

Preceding the American Civil War, the African American community in Troy was a prominent center of racial justice activism. The community was recognized at that time for tenacious leadership in the state suffrage reform movement, as well as the national abolition movement. Jennifer Thompson Burns, Ph.D. will reveal the rich history of Troy’s antebellum African American freedom movement.

Two-Person Exhibition Opens at HVCC’s Teaching Gallery

Chocolate Friendzy Returns to Poestenkill Library

Climate Reality Project Presentation
E. GREENBUSH – On February 9th, the community is invited to First United Methodist Church of East Greenbush, 1 Gilligan Road, for a presentation by the Climate Reality Project. Starting at 10:45 am, Paul Fisk will describe the effects of climate change and what you can do to help create a better future for the planet. His presentation includes information about climate science, evidence of a changing climate and impacts currently felt both locally and globally. Mr. Fisk will discuss solutions that are already underway, including advancements in renewable energy and smart climate policy. The session will end at noon, following questions and answers.

Slavery and Freedom in New Netherland
E. GREENBUSH – Join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, February 9, 2 PM,when Sam Huntington will present a program focusing on slavery in the Dutch settlement of the New World in the 17th century. Our speaker is the Interpretive Programs Assistant at the Crailo State Historic Site. His lecture explores the origins of slavery in NY’s Hudson River Valley which grew out of the Dutch West India Company’s interconnected web of trade networks. Over time, the institution became an entrenched system as enslaved Africans and African Americans became vital to the Hudson Valley’s agricultural and commercial economic system. This presentation highlights both the early history of slavery as an institution in New Netherland and also focuses on the many ways the enslaved community tried to maintain their cultural identity and traditions in bondage. Black Trojans: The Abolition Campaign of the Free Black Community in Troy, New York Before 1861
TROY – On February 11th at 7pm at the Sand Lake Town Hall we will welcome Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns who will talk about “Black Trojans: The Abolition Campaign of the Free Black Community in Troy, New York Before 1861.” Dr. Burns is a Professor at UAlbany and is their 2018-2019 recipient of the Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Award, given to the best dissertation in any field in the College. [NOTE: From 1841-42, Sand Lake Baptist Church Elder Abel Brown was active in the abolitionist movement, as were others in Sand Lake at the time.]

GREENBUSH – On Wednesday, February 12th at the East Greenbush Library from 7pm to 8:30 pm the Capital Area Beekeepers (CAB) will be hosting an open house to which we invite everyone with an interest in bees and beekeeping to come and learn more. You will have a chance to meet a wide range of beekeepers including representatives from the Columbia County Beekeepers and from the Southern Adirondack Beekeepers Association (SABA). BetterBee, one of our favorite product suppliers out of Grennwich, NY, will also be there with answers about equiptment and supplies. Learn about upcoming beekeeping classes and about a range of options for purchasing your own bees to start the new year. You might also be the winner of a locally raised nuc donated to CAB by Bee Hollow Farm in Schodack Landing. (Don’t know what a nuc is? Then you definitely need to attend this open house!)

Sand Lake Seniors Club 2020
SAND LAKE – Sand Lake Seniors Club (SLS) meet on the second Thursday of each month at noon at the Church of the Covenent in Averill Park. If the Averill Park School closes in the winter due to weather there is no meeting. We have group restaurant luncheons and bus trips planned through the year. Our trip chairman, Bette Bieg, has planned two multi-day trips this year. The first is to Lancaster, PA to the Sight and Sound Theatre to see “Queen Esther” on June 2-4. The second is to Virginia Beach including Williamsburg VA on Sept 13-17. Bette has done amazing work planning these trips for us with full itineraries. Plateau People at Work: Gundrum Logging and Lumber
SAND LAKE – Thursday, February 13, 7 pm. Sand Lake Town Hall—Rensselaer Plateau Alliance’s Plateau People at Work Lecture Series presents Rynard Gundrum of Gundrum Logging and Lumber. For over 50 years, the Gundrum family has been committed to sustainable harvesting and responsible forestry of the woodlands of the Rensselaer Plateau and beyond. Gundrum Logging utilizes fully mechanized timber harvesting equipment and Gundrum Lumber operates a traditional circular sawmill to produce fine furniture grade hardwood lumber as well as quality softwood products for the building trades. Rynard Gundrum will talk about the history of the company, what the company does, how it operates, and some of the challenges facing the lumber business today.

TROY – History comes alive when the Esquatak Historical Society presents Michael Barrett, Executive Director of the Hudson-Mohawk Industrial Gateway and Burden Iron Works Museum in Troy on Friday, February 21, 7:00 p.m. at the Castleton Fire Department. 12th Annual Russian Winter Festival
ALBANY – Saturday, February 29 2020. 11am-5pm. Polish Community Center 225 Washington Ave. Ext Albany. It’s a day of Russian traditional food, music, costumes, exhibits, performances, crafts and contests.
The festival’s headliner is a folk ensemble “Barynya” from New York, NY. It’s a well-known group that enjoys exalting stature as the premier Russian folk ensemble outside of Russia. Barynya presents Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Jewish and Gypsy Roma traditional dancing, music, songs, and virtuoso performances on instruments including the balalaika, garmoshka (Russian folk button accordion), and Gypsy guitars.
Children Dance ensemble “Kaleidoscope”, Brooklyn, NY, provides a selection of thrilling and colorful Russian folk dancing, enchanting Russian folk music. Group performs Russian, Ukrainian, Gypsy, Armenian and Georgian folk traditional dances.
The contest “Best Braided Hairdo Contest” at the Grand Finale at 3pm is open to girls and women of all ages for modeling and to any non-professional hair stylists including students of hairdressing schools for designs. Russian braid – girl’s pride and glory! A “Russian braid” is something like a myth in Russia: the word means a girl who owns an especially long and thick braid, which always belongs to a true Russian beauty. Registration: Free.

Averill Park Announces Kindergarten Registrations for the 2020-2021 School Year
AVERILLE PARK – The Averill Park School District has begun the process of registering boys and girls for the 2020-2021 Kindergarten Classes. If you, or someone you know, has a child who will be five years of age on or before December 1, 2020 please contact the district registrar at 674-7050 extension 7201 to make sure that the child is listed on our school census. This will guarantee that you will receive all upcoming kindergarten information by mail. Registration paperwork should be hand delivered by the parent or guardian to the district registrar at the district office at the Averill Park High School during the month of February. Registration hours are Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 3:30 PM. Registration forms are accepted by appointment. All paperwork must be completed by 02-28-2020.

NASSAU – Third Annual Scrabble Tournament: The Friends of the NFL announce the third annual Scrabble Tournament, Sunday, March 24, 2020 to be held at the Nassau Reformed Church, 43 Church Street, Nassau, NY 12123. Hudson Valley Writers Guild Showcases Prose Writers
ALBANY – (hvwg.org) – The Hudson Valley Writers Guild will present a reading to showcase local prose writers. Reading and presenting at this second event in the series will be Moriah Hampton (stories), Keith Willis (romance/fantasy), and Richard Matturro (stories.)
Each of the writers will take 20 to 30 minutes to read from and discuss their work. Members of the Guild and the general public are invited and encouraged to attend to hear these varied works. Light refreshments will be provided.
This event will take place on Sunday, March 29, 2020 between 1:30 and 3:00 pm. It will be at the Washington Avenue main branch of the Albany Public Library in the Community Room on the second floor.

Gilead’s Body & Soul Pantry New Dates for 2020
CENTER BRUNSWICK – I know 2019 was confusing as far as what date we would have pantry and the dinner. As of January 2020 and through April of 2020, we will return to the old schedule of the last Thursday of each month. The hours will be the usual 3:00-6:00 pm.

The Rensselaer County Recovery Helpline offers information, local resources, and referrals for individuals and their families regarding substance use issues. The toll-free line is available 7 days a week from 9am-9pm. Each volunteer chooses shifts of 4 hours at a time to be on-call. When someone calls the number, a volunteer answers on their own smartphone, and can enter information to a database on their own computer, allowing for easy and quick access to resources. The information is sent to one of the 9 leaders, who will then assist the caller. What is the Nassau Sunshine Fund Emergency Loan Program?
NASSAU – Are you a resident of the Town or Villages of Nassau? Has your household budget taken a hit? Got a car repair with nothing to spare? Or, are you having to choose between heat or eat? We know it happens, we’re here, we can help.
Norman Young, a well-known Nassau resident and antique dealer, had a birds eye view of the Great Recession of 2008. As his business involved buying household items from individuals needing to sell such items, he was struck by how hard hit many in the town were by the financial crisis. Norman came across an old cookbook that had been used as a fundraiser by a local organization called Open Porch Sunshine Society, which was around the early 1990s. While that organization had long faded away, he loved its neighbor-helping-neighbor philosophy. He conceived of a new Nassau Sunshine organization in which local residents would provide emergency financial assistance to other town residents dealing with a personal financial crisis.Norman and two friends agreed to reach out to others as well as religious and locally based organizations.
At its first meeting the attendees approved of a simple plan – create a non-profit that would offer interest-free loans to residents of the Town and Villages of Nassau facing a financial crisis that exceeded their resources and for which local agencies, public and private, were unable to offer assistance. As our first chairman, Sam Whaley said, “We decided on no-interest loans instead of just giving money away because it provides dignity, not a handout.

NAMI Connections Recovery Support Group
ALBANY – NAMI Capital Region, NY the local organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, offers its NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group the Second Wednesday of each month from 5p.m.-6:30p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 420 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY 12208. NAMI Connection is a recovery support group program that offers respect, understanding, encouragement and hope. NAMI Connection groups are:
• Free and confidential
• Held weekly for 90 minutes
• Designed to connect, encourage, and support participants using a structured support group model
• Led by trained facilitators living in recovery themselves.
Stephentown Historical Society is creating Welcome To Stephentown package
STEPHENTOWN – Welcome to Stephentown! We can help you with that!
Moving is always stressful, and a hassle, and, let’s face it – a lot of work! And once you’ve moved to your new location, you have a whole new set of situations and obstacles to overcome. You need to find out where to send the kids to school, or where to find someone to fix your plumbing or wiring. Or maybe you want to check out the local organizations and get involved in area groups. So………. in order to help make all of that just a little easier to navigate, the Stephentown Historical Society is creating a “Welcome to Stephentown” package.
We envision this package having lots of informational “stuff”, like names and contacts to help people find just about anything in town. We’d like to provide information from our local organizations, such as the Fire Department, Library, Historical Society, Veterans, Seniors, local churches and synagogues, and any others that exist. We would like to provide a listing (along with business cards where possible) of all local tradespeople and businesses. We want to include any groups in town – for instance, the Heavenly Quilters and Boy & Girl Scouts. We’d love to have menus from restaurants and maybe “new customer” discounts or other coupon-type discounts.
As you can see, this is a formidable task and we do not want to leave anyone out! So, we are asking for your help. If you are a local business or tradesperson and would like to be included in this package, please contact us at shs@nullfairpoint.net. Let us know who you are and what you have to offer – be sure to leave us your contact information so that we can get back to you!
This project has been in the planning stages for quite a while and we’d like to get it off the ground in early 2020, so please act now!

Six Center Redemption is partnering with Alzheimer’s Association
WYNANTSKILL/RENSSELAER – Return your bottles and cans and help The Northeastern New York Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Through an arrangement with: Six-Center Redemption.

The Alzheimer’s Association will receive six cents for every container you donate to the cause. Simply drop off your containers and say “These are for the Alzheimer’s Association.”

Capital Dist. Chapter of the Embroider’s Guild of America
CAPITAL DISTRICT – Do you enjoy needlework? Would you like to stitch with others that have similar interests? Whether you are a beginner or have experience, come join us. The NY Capital District Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America meets in various locations and at various times. The Day Group meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month at Blooming Grove Reformed Church in Defreetsville. Evening meetings are offered in two locations: The Community Room at The Terrace at Beverwyck in Slingerlands from 7p-9p on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month and from 6:30p-9p in the Fellowship Hall of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Clifton Park on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. Grafton Fitness Opportunities
GRAFTON – Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Road, Grafton, has several opportunities to keep our residents 60 and older in shape. Chair Yoga is offered 3 times a week at no charge. This is a low-impact workout for the body and mind. Aerobic Swimming is available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Bennington Rec Center with transportation. Water aerobics offers a resistance and buoyancy that cannot be experienced on ground. The center has a small exercise room with a treadmill and stationary bikes. Regular exercise reduces the risk of injury, decreased symptoms of depression, and improves mobility. Regular exercise can lower blood pressure, strengthen muscles, correct body posture, relieve pain and promotes weight loss. Residents 60 and older are encouraged to get into a good exercise routine. Poestenkill Seniors
POESTENKILL – Weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1pm at the Sullivan-Jones Post in Poestenkill. All seniors are welcome. Coffee and refreshments are served after the meeting, followed by Bingo and cards. The hall is handicapped accessible with sufficient parking. The Poestenkill Seniors have catered lunches, pizza, clam steams, fish fries and luncheons at various restaurants, informational talks on senior safety and bus trips to casinos, theaters and other points of interest.

Search and Rescue Volunteers Needed
CAPITAL DISTRICT – the Tri-State Emergency Team is recruiting volunteers to provide wildland and underwater searches within a 100 mile radius of Waterrford, NY. This includes all aspects of field and underwater search. The Tri-State Emergency Team responds when requested by NYS Forest Rangers and other police agencies throughout New York State, Western Vermont and Massachesettes. We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need. The team will provide training and complete support as needed. Our headquarters is located in Waterford. Applicants need not live in Waterford to volunteer.
